    D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat Questions

No - in fact, *everyone* hears the initial blast - as far away as Waterdeep. The continuous sounding does fade into the background, making animals and people "uneasy". As for the intervention, the adventure has it scheduled for either just before or just after the first Council meeting, where...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Well, I just hit the Well of Dragons/Ritual stuff in my prep. And it's actually one of the weaker points in the module - there's all kinds of potential "gotchas" buried in the text, mostly relying on the timing of the ritual. This is exactly the area where you will least want to wing it -...

D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat - sprucing up the Council sessions

Don't forget to checkout this thread: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?394129-Enhancing-quot-Rise-of-Tiamat-quot-%28Practical-stuff-to-try-at-your-table!%29 It has lots of useful info on RoT. For myself, I intend to make the PCs the lead of many strike teams/adventuring parties used...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I'm not sure I'd agree that RoT requires less work to run than HotDQ. The adventure itself is solid, but there are so many side quests embedded in the narrative that you could easily spend 2 or 3 times the amount of prep work.

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Ah well, I stand corrected then. However, wasting a Red Dragon on Cult Attack is kind of a cheap blow, not using the Red to its full effect. Also, the changeover from Blacks (young adult and adult in the previous two) to Red is a little sudden. Oh, and that brings to mind a different point -...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Except, of course, that none of the suggested cult forces include a Red.

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

More additional thoughts: 1) Your players may want to bring the Giants into the Alliance; it's mentioned as a throw-away at the beginning of the module, and the finale assumes the giants are involved, but it isn't detailed. If you're sticking to Faerun canon, a Jotunmoot to match the Dragon's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat Questions

IIRC the Well of Dragons write-up, the Draakhorn is guarded by an Air Elemental (and a few other things as well). I've assumed that it is essentially continuously blowing. There are no mechanical effects given, so it's really just immaterial. If you want to give this effect, I'd suggest...

D&D 5E (2014) [Poll] How does your group do hit points per level?

Other. Max 1st level, then 3/4 HD/lvl, drop fractions. Add Con bonus as normal. So a 5th level character with 16 Con would have 63 hp as a Barbarian (12+(9*4)+(3*5)) or 37 hp as a Sorcerer (6+(4*4)+(3*5)) or 47 hp as a Cleric (8+(6*4)+(3*5))

D&D 5E (2014) Fantasy Grounds for home games

No, I bought the Ultimate (and all the 5e products at the time). I could afford it, and didn't want to force my players to pony up the money just to play. If you're the GM, and money's a concern, they also offer a subscription license on the ultimate that's well within anyone's pocket money...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rarity: Winged Boots v Boots of Levitation - Huh?

So something that gets missed is the in game justification - I'm no longer sure if it's explicitly called out, or just something I concluded. In the time lapse between 4e and 5e the "default world" societies collapsed (for some reason) - potentially to the equivalent of "bouncing rubble", and...

D&D 5E (2014) Fantasy Grounds for home games

I do. In fact, I explicitly bought it for *just* that purpose. It's working great. To detail where I came from: I had been using a combination of notes on my computer, the written/published adventure, and hand-drawn tabletop maps for *many, many, many* years. The first time I used FG, I used...

D&D 5E (2014) The good, bad, and ugly of the Wish spell

When I last had to deal with wishes on a regular basis, back in 2e, I gave my players the following guidelines: * The wish has to be a single, non-compound (or run-on), sentence with no conjunctions. * Undos are almost always safe. * I will "Monkey's Paw" the wish if it's greedy. * (Implied...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Epic Classes (levels 21-30)

Remarks, part 1 These are done without the books in front of me... Overall: I'd recommend a progression that looks like Class Level Special 21 Epic Boon, minor class ability boost (progressive) 22 minor class ability boost (unique) 23 Class specialization boost 24 Central...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do you prepare/build encounters in 5e? (Poll)

I use the DMG guidelines - I just don't apply the adjustments, it's strictly an XP budget per character. I don't worry about how that budget breaks down in terms of number of monsters. I also don't worry a whole lot about one or two PCs dropping - I just make sure to keep the party cleric...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

The Hatchery is one of the areas that got extensively reworked in my campaign. I did a number of things for areas 3 & 4: 1) Eliminated the safe paths down the sides (for 3), and hid the safe path under an illusion. 2) Hid more stirges in the bat colony, and also added a couple swarms of bats as...

RISE OF TIAMAT Now Available For Fantasy Grounds

I run on a Mac myself. The one problem with using FG's recommended setup is that you can't (apparently) run two copies of the software from Steam. I suspect, however, that if you downloaded another copy from the site itself that you'd probably be fine. However, you'd have to follow their...

RISE OF TIAMAT Now Available For Fantasy Grounds

It depends on the rule, and how tightly you want to integrate it into the game. Creating/modifying monsters, for instance, is incredibly easy, since the NPC form is free-text entry anyways (and if you follow the wording used in the MM, it'll even parse things out for you). Likewise, adding...

RISE OF TIAMAT Now Available For Fantasy Grounds

Or, divvying up the costs among the entire table, the startup setup I listed is under $20 each (assuming a GM and 5 players). I really can't express succinctly how impressed I am with FG. Remember when I said it was *much* more usable? The adventure includes prebuilt encounters that auto-roll...
