RISE OF TIAMAT Now Available For Fantasy Grounds

Cost of FG & Tyranny of Dragons There's two basic modes for using FG. One where it's essentially a GM aid for a live game, and the other where its actually being used as a virtual tabletop. The latter is more expensive, primarily because of the licensing requirements for the GM/players. So...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Transitions are important I'll preface this post a not that I've just started on annotating and modifying RoT for my use. With that said: The transition from HotDQ to RoT is very poorly detailed. As written, it's basically a Shepherd's hook with a note that says "Plot begins here." (Yank!)...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Tie it to RoT So let me first preface this that I made a LOT of changes to HotDQ, because I'm running Phandelver/HoDTQ/RoT as one long campaign arc. Unless you're interested I won't talk about the Phandelver required changes (the two biggest of which are +3-4 levels, and coming in from the...

    D&D 3.x Action Points. (3.5)

I use them, and have since I first encountered them. I use the UA variant, and allow the Eberron Feats, but none of my players use them. I find my players use them for two reasons: 1) To improve/guarantee their chance of success when they think it's important. 2) To guard against failure. As...

    Boardgame Fundraiser

All - Begging forgiveness, I want to call your attention to the Boardgame Fundraiser my lodge is throwing. The Calendar has all the details - http://www.enworld.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=93&day=2009-10-24&c=1, I just didn't want it to get lost in the noise. Happy gaming!

    Fate of WotC Closed Content?

Right. Which is why I posted my original musing. Anybody who's decided to stick to 3.x isn't going to be part of the 4e market. So offering OGL licenses for their OOP products doesn't hurt WotC - they weren't going to get 3.x diehards' money anyway. Heck, by licensing the right to republish...

    Fate of WotC Closed Content?

I'm sure this was brought up way back when 4e first poked its head over the horizon, but I don't remember the answer. For that matter with the release of the GSL and 4e, the answer may have changed. Given that the mechanics of 4e and 3e are so radically different, and that the old 3e...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder: Encounter Design Simplified

I like the system. My only quail is that the difficulty multipliers are (IMO) too low. A party of 4 5th level characters probably *won't* find 6 ogres to be an "epic" challenge, even if that's what the current CR system specifies. OTOH, changing the basic "+2 EL = x2 creatures" rule probably...

OGC Compilation Limits Morrus - I'm curious as to what your policies are for the OGC Compilation page. Theoretically, I suppose, anyone could post anything there as long as it's published OGC. But I'm not sure that reposting the entirety of something like the Tome of Horrors is appropriate...

    Wiki Wiki Wiki

To-be created... Morrus - the links to empty pages appear to be the same as the links to non-empty pages. It'd be helpful to be able to distinguish these on the pages (including tabs), so that you can see at a glance if there's information attached or not. Also, where'd the reviews DB go? I'd...

GSL-What happens when someone uses my OGC?

Here's a slighty different question. Suppose BobCo uses KenCo's OGC (the Dreaded Hephaflumph) in their OGL/3.x CastleDeathskull adventure. BobCo intends to upgrade to 4e and the GSL KenCo doesn't. BobCo wants to upgrade CastleDeathskull, and gets KenCo's permission to 4e-ize the Hephaflumph. In...

    The Failure of Gleemax

Actually, my understanding is that Radiant Machine isn't a new company. Rather, it's Fluid Entertainment with a renaming/rebranding. And since Fluid's the company that gave us E-Tools and the D&D 2e Core Rules toolset, well... Gleemax actually functions better than I expected. And I share the...

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

Things I've learned from other GMs: 1) Having any kind of (appropriate) sound track running in the background makes a huge difference; it greatly enhances mood. It doesn't have to be complex (LotR soundtracks on auto-repeat suffices), but it should be there. My "flattest" sessions have been...

    DDXP: When Anti's become Pro's

Still on the fence I'm still on the fence personally. Going in, I heard a lot of good design principles, but the rumored implementations still felt a little flat to me. I was actually worried that there'd be so many changes it wouldn't feel like D&D anymore. The good news is that it still...

How many classes do you prefer in a RPG?

I was assuming order matters - that is, a Leader-Defender is different from a Defender-Leader, and just ran a permutation. But that's still a little off. If you just run with pure and half-classes, and ordering matters, you end up with 16. If you don't think it does, then you get 10, as you said.

How many classes do you prefer in a RPG?

I like combinatorics.... I actualy think RMSS (Rolemaster) got the class divisions about right. 4 "pure" classes (Leader, Striker, Defender, Controller; Cleric, Rogue, Fighter, Wizard) then their "half-classes" (eg. Leader-Defender; Cleric/Fighter = Paladin or Ranger) which takes us to 24...

    What Interests You Non-Upgraders

Adventures, especially psionic oriented adventures, or adventures supporting using the alternative systems that came late in 3e (like the Tome of Magic, Magic of Incarnum, and Tome of Battle). Adventure Sites/Encounters, like 2e's City/Castle/Country Guides, or Penumbra's EnRoute series. NPC...

    Runebound & Descent. Any good?

I regard Runebound as a *very* worthy successor to Talisman. Using the Doomcounters option is pretty much required if you want to avoid the super-powered/cakewalking heroes endgame, which is the most serious failing for Talisman as well. Descent is essentially a 3.x Dungeoncrawl, with an...

    Gamer lingo glossary

COUP - Constructs, Oozes, Undead, and Plants; the monsters types not affected by sneak attacks and other precision damage. Many of these are also mindless, which poses a problem for characters that rely on mind-compulsion and charm effects. RAI - Rules As Interpreted; what you have a DM for.
