D&D General March Madness (D&D Classes) 2024 - Scores and Discussion

Aw darn. Now you've exposed my fragile hope to the rest of the world. Sigh. No cookie for me I guess. :D:P Aliright, who wants to start a write-in campaign for the 1e Jester? Or the 3.x Hench (i.e. Nodwick) class?

D&D General Druid vs. Paladin - March Madness 2024 - Final Round!

There were some pretty good contenders. I'm still surprised that the Druid has come this far, but my tongue in cheek comments aside, it is a solid class. I still think Wizards are better. But then, I really value flexibility in my casting classes.

D&D General March Madness (D&D Classes) 2024 - Scores and Discussion

So the real question - now that the tie persists, and given we were both expecting "Wizard vs. Paladin" (neither of which are potato salad or ice cream, thank you), can the tie even be broken? I won't begrudge el-remmen his gift if so. It's been fun.

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

Another option you might want to try is Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed (note the word order). A very interesting take on an Alternate D&D. And that is playable with 3.x directly.

    D&D General March Madness 2024 - Round 6 - Martials Semi-Final

Having appeared twice Paksenarrion is now also on the zero point list. Paks, by the way, is very clearly a BECMI paladin, as you can see in her backstory (traditional unpowered fighter + experience + dramatic choosing) and her dungeon crawl with the elf. She is a GREAT model for anyone intending...

    D&D General March Madness 2024 - Round 5 - Casters Semi-Final

Dangit. Wizards need a movie with Zantanna or Polgara as the lead, playing the heroic wizard. Druids currently have an unfair advantage.

    D&D General March Madness 2024 - Round 6 - Martials Semi-Final

@Tonguez I see what you did there. For all the noise that surrounds them, I've always loved the Pally as a class. But they are definitely (thanks to the RP aspects) always a class I discussed with my GMs and players first. My first (and most telling) question: Name three examples of paladins...

D&D General March Madness (D&D Classes) 2024 - Scores and Discussion

Or we could end up in a 5-way tie, if both el-remmen and I are wrong and the next three are right. Still, surprised by Druid's resilience.

    D&D General March Madness 2024 - Round 5 - Casters Semi-Final

Sigh. Even if they tie, Druids will win because of the alphabet. But in my soul, I know that Wizards ARE superior! We still have a half--hour! We only need four more people to come to sanity! VOTE WIZARD!

D&D General The rise and fall of D&D in Japan

Eh. The only report I had was from one of the D&D streaming panic-mongers. Not someone I consider credible. Nice to see the actual official references.

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

I'll strongly disagree with you here. I'm adapting 3.0 modules for use in my PF2e campaign on a regular basis. It requires roughly the same amount of effort I used when adapting 3.x modules for use in 5e. Now, I can't use the module's stats-as-written directly (beyond very basics), but that's...

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

A point. But just picks - not calculations, which makes it easier. Also, I've found the feat system in PF2e is very forgiving. Just about all of them are useful in immediate ways, and just about all of the feats are useful through a character's entire career. Unlike 3.x you don't need to plot...

D&D General The rise and fall of D&D in Japan

A for other languages, I've heard (unsubstantiated) that Hasbro/WotC has ended localization efforts & sales in Brazil. I suspect their localization efforts outside of the European Languages are miniscule. Even in the euro-region, I'd be surprised if they translated to anything other than...

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

I'll second payn of the free archetype, especially if you want to see them in play. The core class abilities they replace are good enough (and diverse enough) to be very compelling. I'll raise a caution flag on the "proficiency without level" option, though. While I'd love to run the game that...

    D&D General March Madness 2024 - Round 5 - Casters Semi-Final

For everything else, there's Meteor Swarm. Wizards. Don't leave town without them.

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Monster Core

Not generic in one sense, true. They are very recognizable. They are also not bound to a specific world - the classic D&D dragons for instance have appeared in the Faerun, Greyhawk, Mystara, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, and even Spelljammer settings. And while there are differences (especially with...

D&D General A Unified Spellcasting Mechanic for 5E?

And like most things, it's often a spectrum. Too much sameness == "why bother?" Too much uniqueness == "OMG, another subsystem?" And where the happy point is varies from person to person. And sometimes, the same person might like different approaches at different times. And that (and other...

D&D General A Unified Spellcasting Mechanic for 5E?

Umm... I'm confused. 5e already has a unified spell casting mechanic. Wizards, Sorcerer, Clerics, Warlocks, etc. - they all use Spell Slots. And spells cast using those slots are resolved in the same ways - either an attack roll (for rays, etc.) or a spell save. Now, how the spells get into the...

Pathfinder 1E Are there compelling reasons to upgrade to PF1 from 3.0?

If you're looking for less complex, you might want to check out the PF2e ruleset on AoN. It does a good job of reducing the overly fiddly bits while still retaining flexibility. And while it's relatively easy to convert from 3.x to PF2e (because it is still d20 math), the system does have...
