Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Wow. It feels like months since I was in this thread. Ouch. My tempus has been fugiting way too much lately. Larcen, that's a terrific idea! Consider it added to my todo list. Work has stalled on the Macropedia Big Shiny document because of lifestuff getting in the way, but hopefully I'll be...

If you had to cut one element from the D&D game...

Oh my. So much to choose. It's like being in an inverse candy store. I'd nerf AoO straightaway as being the single most pointless contentious game-stalling mechanic ever invented (cue wise-ass posts saying "I understand it, read the rules, what's not to understand", yadda yadda. I understand...

The origin of Rangers with Two-Weapon-Fighting

I'm pretty sure it's a Drizzt thing. Two scimitars indeed. Ick. IMC we consider Rangers to be more akin to Ronin. They're fiercely independent freemen who either use a Miyamoto Musashi style fighting technique (longsword + shortsword) or archery. Either way they're respected by most and...

    The Illusion of Powergaming

Surely the big balancing factor in all this is not the books, the rules or the players, but the DM. I can tell the players that this is a street-level campaign, and expect them to build to type. Maybe I'll give a low stat array (8,10,11,12,13,14, say) and a set of class/race combo restrictions...

    Best of Necromancer?

I consider Tome of Horrors I and II to be core books in my group (much to the consternation of my players). The first one was everything MMII should have been but wasn't, and both deserve space on every gamer's shelves. Not that they'll stay there for long. Highly recommended if you want that...

Necromancer Games shutting down next year.(UPDATE post 93)

Sad news indeed. I wish them all the best for the future. You can't keep a good Necromancer down for long. One day, just maybe we'll hear the cry: "4th Edition rules, 3rd Edition feel!" So long, and thanks for all the great stuff. My gaming group and I owe you much happiness.

    Class based around Use Rope?

Use Rope..... voted Most Useless Skill Ever by my group of gamers who have a total of over 120 game-years of experience on the matter. And he wants a character /based/ on it......Ick. OK. I'll bite. Cowboy. He wants a cowboy. He needs to grab hold of a copy of Deadlands d20, or knock up some...

    Cardboard Counters for minis?

Far and away the best I've found and use regularly are Disposable Heroes. The Fantasy sets (1,2,3,4) are $4 each for a whole bunch of fold-and-stand-up figures. Best of all, you can build your own sets up from the ones you've bought and print out custom sheets - perfect for that Goblin Army...

looks like Chimps Have weapon proficency Spear

I'm more worried that the Washington Post can't spell Mammals correctly in the caption undeneath the photo. Maybe they hired chimps to write it. Spear wielding chimps are /so/ going to get snarfed for my game. Anyone know where there's chimp stats for d20? The srd has Monkeys (too small by...

    What's the next "Scape" book?

Well, we've already got Farscape :) How about Greatescape, a supplement all about digging a tunnel out of a PoW camp. Oh wait, that's a movie............ Put me in for another vote for Junglescape. I want me some Tarzan d20. I'll toss Dreamscape into the pot too, covering the Realms of Sleep...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

:D It's good to see M20 sparking creative ideas in folks. Simplification is good for the soul. It's good to see folks disliking some of the concepts in Microlite20 then making their own system as a result. In a way, that's a better result than someone just using M20 as-is and not changing a...

Is Star Wars RPG the perfect d20 system?

The thing is that the same could be said of the whole of d20, including D&D. The only thing that's changed is the number of weekends :) d20 is itself a cobbled together system that kinda-sort-almost works. It's got rules-that-fix-rules bolted onto the top of lecacy systems like some kind of...

    Strangest Campaign Setting?

I ran one campaign where the players played themselves in Over the Edge where they won tickets to the Island. It included one session where they played themselves, playing Over the Edge, playing themselves. The metaphysics burst this GM's brain! Bunnies and Burrows was always good for a larf...

Is Star Wars RPG the perfect d20 system?

Well, I guess it's true. Ask 10 gamer's their opinion, and you'll get d20 different answers :) Interesting how many people didn't like the system much (or thought it broken) while I like it a lot. I guess differnet people, different needs and expectations. That's cool too. I'm really drooling...

Is Star Wars RPG the perfect d20 system?

Good points, all, thanks. I didn't know there's a new version coming out. Boy will Mark (my player) ever be hacked off! :) Balance is less of an issue for our group, whatever the game. Good game balance comes from good games mastering, not bad rules. That's something D&D doesn't seem to...

Is Star Wars RPG the perfect d20 system?

I agree, on both counts. d6 was fun for over the top cinematics, but it became too easy to turn Star Wars into a Paranioa session instead - huge blaster wielding maniacs cheerfully wading into and out of situations. For our group, at least :)

Is Star Wars RPG the perfect d20 system?

I've been reading it through it preparation for one of my group running a game in the near future, and I'm liking what I see - a lot. Almost of the the niggles and stuff that jars about D&D has been ironed out beautifully to produce a neat, well constructed and streamlined game system. Here's a...

    Undead supehero character needs development.

I like it. Sounds vaguely Moon Knight-ish, only dead. There's a lot of mileage in those Egyptian gods of the dead, ancient priests and archeological digs Best Forgot when it comes to dead superhero origins, y'know. I had a long-standing anti-hero NPC in our superhero game called D.K. He was a...
