Does 4e have a sweet spot?

IMO, level 2 and up. I dislike how level 1 has just one encounter and one daily. Getting a few options up is better. That said, I haven't played about 19th yet, or DMed above 18th. I've seen some stuff that might be problematic. The monster damage to PC damage seems a bit off. I also saw...

Want to Run Tomb of Horrors

Which tomb of horrors? S1: the original module Return to the Tomb of Horrors: the significantly expanded 2e module Tomb of Horrors: the freely available 3.5 Conversion Tomb of Horrors: the 4e conversion sent out as a DM's reward that is just a conversion of S1 Tomb of Horrors: the 4e module...

    Mike Mearls Ruined Everything

It could be worse. Imagine if mearls decides to take a deep breath; he could ruin oxygen.

Can mearls ruin a thread so bad, even he couldn't make it any worse?

Which D&D Campaign World did you enjoy most?

Favorite setting for reading about: Planescape. I love concept of all these ideas taken to some of their greatest extremes. I adore Sigil, for no discernible reason. Beliefs becoming real by force of belief is a great basis for a setting in theory. In practice I haven't found it to hold up...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

This new information puts me into the "4.5" camp as well. Basically my standard was that if my old books stayed valid and fully usable (even if they get heavily modified) then its not a new edition. The change in monster layout from MM1 to MM3 doesn't count, because I can still use the...

    Castle Ravenloft: My first game

could you give some examples? Thus far, the only ambiguous issue I see is monster AI for exact movement and attack targeting. But I don't see either of those being all that significant.

    Must a campaign world change?

If there is metaplot, I'd prefer that to be the point of the setting. That is, something like (what I gather about) Dragonlance where the advancement of the plot happens through the adventures of the characters. I'd rather my character not have to read a newspaper to catch up on the major new...

    Castle Ravenloft: My first game

As near as I can tell, its a standalone game based on the Ravenloft module.

    The Core...Forgotten...Eberron?

No, Diablo on paper is 3e. Really, it is. More seriously, the best way to learn is to play. Assuming you are going with 4e, which is the current version, I would recommend getting the Player's Handbook and either borrow or buy the 4e Eberron Player's Guide. After that, you might want to...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

Out of question, how would something like this be any different from the Deck of Many Things, only less powerful?

Why *Dont* you like Forgotten Realms?

In the sense that I don't own any, I guess I do. I would read and possibly borrow bits and pieces of the 4e CS, only because the 4e book seems to be designed for such cutting. As a complete setting, I just don't have an interesting story to tell in Faerun. It might be just a bad first...

    Ravenloft delayed to August 31

A couple of other reasons to keep it to 2 levels. First, since paper is 2 sided, its really convenient to level by flipping the paper over. Adding an extra card for each character increases stuff to track. In addition, for just a single level, the power cards don't need to be adjusted; with...

    So I have this friend...

Well, there's a lot to unpack here. First, clearly gaming itself isn't the root issue. Its a whole bunch of other stuff. Next, he should go see a doctor about an evaluation for a mood disorder. Third, divorce is an option. From what you've described, he sounds like a bit of a jerk, which is...

    Ravenloft delayed to August 31

The gencon numbers I've heard are <1.5 hours including learning the rules and punching out all the tiles.

    Ravenloft delayed to August 31

There are ~41 4x4 tile pieces. with a playtime of ~1 hour, leveling more than once would require leveling every 20 minutes. That's a pretty steep leveling curve.
