    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

We're in solid agreement here. And you've now completely missed my point. LR functions as an alternative health system, trading out whatever the standard X Attack actions you'd need to to get through a monster's HP, for 4 big spells (maybe barring a stunning strike monk) until the monster hits...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

I've got a larger thesis about negotiation in TTRPGs, but I generally don't care for it and systems that force it to happen. I don't want to be in a situation where I'm bargaining with a player for what effects they can produce or what the function of their tools are, I want to present them with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

For sure replacing LRs with more monster specific abilities (and/or swapping in action economy penalties or some connection to HP damage) in general is a better design idea, but in the system we have and for the purpose LRs currently serve, they would do a better job if they were triggered...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

That's exactly hit points. There's no difference between an "I win spell" and "the 4th round of attacks that kills the monster." It's still invest actions until monster is dead, the problem as has been articulated elsewhere, is that team martial and team magic are attacking separate health...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

It's not really about difficulty, it's about consistency and moving a potential point of at the table friction to something mediated by rules. If you want increased difficulty, just increase the amount of LR, like you would give a monster more HP, or make the conditions more critical effects.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance shouldn't be optional

Legendary Resistance should specify triggering conditions, and not require a GM judgement call. Instead of choosing the saves to avoid, LR should have text like "the first X times a failed saving throw would cause Y or more damage, or inflict conditions A-G, treat this monster as if it succeeded...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 10 Species in "Your Ideal 2024 PHB"

I think my proposed "combining" methodology is getting sold a little short here. Consider the FC species I'm discussing in the gnome/halfling situation. Here's the base "Pech" smallfolk: And here's the feat that make you a gnome: Pechs have some of the least transformative species feats in...

The Willingness to Embrace Joy in Things.

This drove me out of discussions about Star Trek. I didn't click with Discovery at all, went to go find people to talk about it with, and found lots of racist misogyny. Better to not engage at all, than risk those people taking anything I said as common cause. On the premise of the thread, I...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 10 Species in "Your Ideal 2024 PHB"

Human Elf Dwarf Halfling Goblin Orc Some variant of lizardperson Warforged/construct Centaur Monstrous- some kind of non-thumb having, quadrupedal creature template. I'd go the Fantasy Craft route, and make these kind of "base" types, with the option to spend your first feat for a specific...

WotC New WotC President Is World of Warcraft's John Hight

That's a really good point. D&D marketing has always been an afterthought outside of English. I wonder if we're wrong to look at TTRPGs specifically though, given you're looking at places where videogames are available simultaneously, and where roleplaying might never coalesce into what we think...

WotC New WotC President Is World of Warcraft's John Hight

I don't know, those people come with all kinds of competition. We have a lot more ways to do roleplaying and a lot more ways to do games than we've ever had at any point in TTRPGs past. Plus, the D&D hegemony cuts both ways; it eats up everyone who plays TTRPGs, but it also becomes the face of...

Level Up (A5E) Martial Artistry (3pp book in the works) Ideas and Concepts

In genre, "Hero" or "Expert" are both appropriate, but frustratingly generic. You could maybe do something with "lightness" and/or "internal strength" to touch on quigong/neigong.

Taking A Peek At The Stormlight RPG!

Remove me a little of Spirit Island's fast and slow powers, though in that game you might deploy a mix of both, and there's only one event turn sandwiched between the fast and slow phase. If the enemy is largely acting fast, going slowly may have an additional advantage on that you're able to...

Pathfinder 2E Mark Seifter wants to set the record straight: Feats and Improvisation in Pathfinder 2e (Video)

Surely that could be better achieved then by not writing the feat the way it is? The proposal here is not that the feat grant a new action, but instead it should be understood to mitigate a penalty. There's no reason it couldn't simply have done that, instead of existing the way it does. I...

Pathfinder 2E Mark Seifter wants to set the record straight: Feats and Improvisation in Pathfinder 2e (Video)

You've missed the second part of the ask, which is that the penalty be intrinsic to the resolution, thus that resolution is fixed on the GM side, and the player will simply note or ask if their feat applies, and then add it. That is, Coerce could include a modifier or subsystem for affecting a...

D&D General Nerd Rage, Taste Mongering, & Fan Culture

I respect the urge to stay out of the OGL topic, but I really don't think it fits neatly in the broader point here. Part of the whole "permissive use of copyright" was an explicit promise not to change that permission. Nerd rage, as you're using it, seems to be about the audience creating a...

Pathfinder 2E Mark Seifter wants to set the record straight: Feats and Improvisation in Pathfinder 2e (Video)

I would appreciate this a lot more if it was modular design laid out as a menu of settings, instead of yet more "don't worry, you can just do the game design yourself on the fly" advice. The point about Treat Wounds is great, and an actual toggle setting that laid out the impact and the...

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

When I was much younger than I am now, I was very confused that "being pedantic" was a criticism. Surely you'd want to know all the details of the thing, and above all, be as right as possible? There was a period I leaned into it as a badge of honor, and developed the prickly, isolating sort...

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

That's something you could design around, if you were so motivated. Perception/knowledge being done as defenses is the easiest starting place.
