    Tome of Horrors News--Please Read

I want this so bad, but I have a hard time justifying the price just for the bragging rights. Many of my favorites are already in the Pathfinder bestiaries and I can do conversions myself.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Copyright Issues at Obsidian Portal?

I'm not taking a side, but I think it's apparent that he was, in fact, distributing images of Paizo's cards, for the purposes for which the cards were intended, "tiny" or not. It is clearly infringing. Is this Fair Use? Good question.

I'm fine with that. I don't actually have a problem with Claws costing the same as Cosmic Power, or whatever. Or characters being in very different power levels in terms of their capabilities. The problem I see is that there is a dividing line between "balance really isn't a concern" and...

... Or that GMS rushed a project to market before fully dealing with all of the wrinkles of a new game system he found appealling. Hmmm.... :)

    What should Lawful elves worship?

I would expect them to be "joiners." They form cliques, try to alter social environment to be more hiearchical, and philosophically, attack perceied inconsistencies in others. Like, Palpatine is NE, because his be-all, end-all is dominating others and proving his superiority. Vader is CE...

Who puts the "class" in Armor Class?

"Hit points" makes sense if you realize that in older games, damage was 1 point. So 3 "hit points" meant you had to get hit three times.

Who puts the "class" in Armor Class?

You can actually see another strand of this family of combat mechanics in Rolemaster. Arms Law was originally a sourcebook for D&D, basically. Arms Law was a bunch of tables, one for each weapon, with a column for each armor type.

    Four Commoners

My brother and his friends used to call this "Farmer Brown." They would all player commoners, who at some point, would inevitibly get pushed too far and turn into murderous psychopaths.

Who puts the "class" in Armor Class?

"Leather" "ring" "mail" "plate" You know, ... classes of armor. In the original rules you could get +/-1 for Dex and a few other modifiers, but basically, the to-hit difficulty was the type of armor you wore. This was then abstracted to a number in order to simplify monster write-ups.

Having spend a little time cuddling with the system, here is my tentative opinion: ICONS is, in fact, good. I think this distillation of the Fate system is very worthy and smart. I may use it to teach RPGs to my six year old, when he is ready. However. This thing needs to be houseruled the...

    Optimal Number of classes?

It really depends. For something like Pathfinder, where every class has a dense, specified progression, as well as a signature capstone ability, you could have almost an infinite number. On the other hand, for something like True20, where each role is quite versatile and advancement is pretty...

Adventuring Classes: For a Few Denarii More (now taking requests)

It will be a full BAB class. It will not have "grit." It will offer a little more than simply shooting things.

    Gaming Phases

I relate. I'm quite the renaissance geek at this point... LARPing, studying medieval fencing manuals, playing and writing RPGs, building computers, cooking. And of course, the kids are really where it's at. Playing Lego Star Wars on the Wii with little kids is the bomb. But at root, I'm...

    Gaming Phases

Phase 1: Gimme I started with the Red Box, and got coaxed into playing AD&D with the older kids on the street. I wanted all the gaming I could get, all the time. I was fairly strict about reading rules. As a budding DM, I experimented with a variety of styles, including "telling a story" and...

Adventuring Classes: For a Few Denarii More (now taking requests)

You asked for it, so here it comes. Announcing the sequel to Adventuring Classes: A Fistful of Denarii. This is an open call for feedback on these class concepts. After I finish up some school stuff in the next few weeks, I'm prepping alpha versions of these classes for playtesting. I would...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder outselling D&D

If you want code written fast, and you want it to work, you can forget about reasonable. :) Also, you're forgetting that most coders for hire only work part of the year. Now, if you want to say WotC has ten guys on salary for $75,000, that's believable... except that they would be crazy to have...

Rebutting a fallacy: why I await 5e (without holding my breath)

I think, in the balance, there is very little D&D has to be. As long as it's entertaining enough, and financially feasible, for 40+% of their existing fanbase to adopt the new edition, the new edition could be heavy, lite, old school, dungeonpunk... anything you could name, as long as the...

Synergies Between Game Styles: Simulationist - Gamist - Storytelling

No, I'm not redefining terms. Sorry for not being clearer. Theatrix is a game in which the the physics thereof are based on what would be considered narratively preferable. That is still an answer to a question. In fact, given that RPGs are controlled by people with their own narrative...
