    Problem Editing Signature

You and me both. I may not post here often, but I really like it here. I like signatures, and I'm not sure why I should pay to have one...

In praise of the XP system

For what it's worth, I really like the inline comments. It's a good way to see how the community feels about things without stretching the conversation out while people quote a poster above and then say "Agreed" like it adds to the conversation at all.

    Running a Hex-Crawling Campaign

I've been interested in running a hex-crawling campaign for a while now, but I have no idea where to start, and figured that this would be a good place to ask, what with the most old-school gamers tending to congregate here. I want to run the campaign using the Rules Cyclopedia D&D, that being...

Looking for magic items with 'quirks'

I'm sort of in the same situation, where I'm trying to design weapons that aren't the same, boring +2 whatevers that you find in every game. To that end, I'm also trying to make some items that have quirks and drawbacks. Especially drawbacks, but that's more of a campaign setting thing than a...

OD&D Is the OD&D Rules Cyclopedia worth it?

I love Labyrinth Lord to death. I hate to be a shill, but it's seriously awesome. It's so close to being the BECMI version that I grew up on, even I have a hard time telling them apart.

Holy cow! D&D tiles for the iPad!

Well, at least there's one use for an iPad now! I kid, I kid! (There still isn't one. )

D&D3.x Noob Questions: Leveling Rate/How to Stock a Dungeon?

You could always do it like I do it: Design your encounters with the real world in mind, and adjust fire based on how the players are handling it. Maybe you design a kobold warren with too many spellcasters? So what, just take a couple out or remove them or whatever.

What 4e Fluff do you Like?

We stand in agreement for everything, except for the new look for troglodytes. They're too sleek and characterless for my liking. Now that I think about it, that could apply to a lot of things I don't like about the new edition

    % of in-character, out-of-character and out-of-game talk

For us, it's probably 50/50, which is fine. We're all in game, talking about what's going on and who to kill and what to do next, when suddenly one of us remembers something that we heard about some semi-related subject or some abstract thing we just thought of, and we're all joking and having a...

What 4e Fluff do you Like?

To be honest, I haven't gotten anything other than the core 3 4e books. I wasn't really impressed, and they're kinda expensive. But even if it turns out I don't much care for a lot of the fluff changes, I like two things especially: 1) They turned gnolls into hideously evil demon cultists...

    Roleplaying is fun!

See, that's exactly why I love rules-light games. When you don't have to worry about a hundred rules and creating a perfectly balanced encounter or whatever, you have more time to enjoy the hobby at its finest- as a bunch of friends goofing off in an imaginary world. That's why face-to-face...

    Combat takes way too long?

My players aren't satisfied with combat. A little backstory- We've all played Dark Heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and 0e retroclones. Some of us have played AD&D and some White Wolf games, like Mage. We're used to systems where death is possible and gruesome, where combat can take...

What do you get out of signatures?

I don't really understand the OP's point. I don't hardly notice signatures; maybe one out of five actually gets my attention. And of those five, it's usually the concise, visually interesting, and unusual ones that really get me to read them. Most of them are just quotes about some nonsense...

    Co-op game recommendations

I'd like to recommend Descent: Journey into the Dark. It's mostly cooperative, for everybody but the Overlord. It can last a fair minute, especially your first couple of plays, but it's a real treat to play a board-game RPG lite for an hour or so with your buddies. It's literally a beer and...

    E6

Not to get off-topic, but I think a RPG that doesn't do that is a moderate failure. If the settings don't dovetail in perfectly with the setting, then that's no good. For example, Eberron takes D&D and extrapolates it into a coherent setting, instead of a mish-mash of european settings and...

    DM Merchanting

I'm of a split mind against this. On one hand, it's flavorful and fairly accurate. Most merchants aren't going to let players dump random amounts of everything onto them, especially since most of the stuff will be obviously-used equipment, garbage, or things with an obviously stolen nature...

    bag of many edition questions

I agree with their sentiment, but not so much your treatment. I, too, feel that elves are overrated fops, and it's far more annoying that in every game elves are the wise, overbearing tree-huggers, or svelte, graceful rangers, or any other trope that they get put on. No matter where elves fall...

Are Any Pre-4e Books Essential Reading?

I'd go with any sort of 1e or 2e player's handbooks, DMGs, and the like. Even the basic books packed so much musty goodness in them, that you'll be full of ideas and ready for the fun in no time. I wouldn't go much further than 2nd edition. The later editions tend to lack the juicy flavor of...

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

I understand your pain. I, too, was excited by 4e for a good long while. Matter of fact, I picked up the Player's Guide and then, shortly thereafter, the other two books as well. I loved the little details, the smoothing over of the entire game, the way that suddenly everything made sense and...

The Great Conjunction II (RPG Design Contest)

This is exactly the opportunity I'd been needing. I'm in. Plus, I love old-school RPGs and had been wanting to make one for years now.
