In my own limited experience, I've seen that players can certainly get by without a controller, although it's probably suboptimal.

I, actually, view the lack of fluff as a benefit, as it makes monsters more easy to "bend" into homebrewed campaign worlds. No more wasting space for little facts about monsters that aren't going to be used or won't have anything resembling the fluff presented.

The target hasn't moved closer if it hasn't moved, or if the warlock moves. The target, in fact, hasn't moved at all, and therefore doesn't trigger that effect.

Now this seems entirely reasonable, especially since it works both ways. You can't shoot past the paladin in plate to massacre the wizard, and you can't shoot past the orc to kill the orc shaman.

If there were no OGL, I'd be playing 4e, enthusiastically. While 3rd edition was fine for a while, the more I looked, the less I liked and soon enough, I got tired of houseruling everything and its cousin. If I wasn't playing either of those, I'd be playing Dark Heresy and/or Mage:The Awakening.
