Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

I like the idea of the warlord's words being so jarring they wake his unconscious allies. Ever been awoken by a loud noise? Wait, does an ally even have to hear an Inspiring Word to benefit from it? *checks PHB* Nope, you can be deafened and still benefit. So you'd have to lip-read? Wait, you...

Healing Word (and the abuse thereof)

I like the idea of the cleric/warlord taking several short rests to use & recharge their healing powers. When the PCs take 20 minutes for some intensive healing I know I've done my job as a DM. Sometimes the PCs don't have time on their side, but when they do I let them benefit from...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

This is pretty much how I run it. Before bloodied you get mostly knocked around, take nicks & cuts & other flesh wounds. When you're bloodied by a hit, then we get a laceration or some other nasty wound.

    Playing Dhampyr

Thanks for the quick response Moridin! Your version of the feat makes a lot more sense - here's to hoping it gets some errata soon!

    Playing Dhampyr

@ Moridin (or anyone else with an opinion) - I have a question regarding the Savage Bite feat. It's a clumsy read IMO, but am I right in assuming the feat does 2 things: 1 - Allows you to use blood drain without grabbing a target 2 - The target of the blood drain grants combat advantage to you...

[High level monsters and powers] What can Graz'zt actually do?

@ DracoSuave & Felon - Isn't Safer (Seraph) Sephiroth from FF VII? If Sephiroth was in FF XII it's news to me! @ Gizmo - Your last post seems laden with excessive hyperbole. Are there any DMs in this thread afraid of losing control over their PCs, sitting them in featureless rooms and reading...

    Roll That 20!!!

I've DM'ed a 6 PC party from 1st to 7th and so far only one natural 20 death save has shown up. It was a great moment, but unlike Scribble I was hooting-n-high-fiving on the outside. :o

Misuse of the save mechanics in the MM to reintroduce save or die effects

@ GorTex - I think it's only two failed saves: [attack hits] slowed [failed save] -> immobilized [failed save] -> petrified. Not that it matters much to the discussion. B-)

Misuse of the save mechanics in the MM to reintroduce save or die effects

This! Have the PCs fight several such creatures and benefit from redundancy. Tougher to do with elite/solo monsters though. I like the mechanic though, and if I really wanted to be evil I'd just fit in a save penalty and level the monster up a bit.

    D&D 4E 4E combat and non-combat timing

In 3e I designed dungeons with a lot of potential "spill over" between encounters, and monsters from one room would often join in while the PCs were battling something else. It made for some great battles, and a few delves turned into giant brawls where it seemed like the entire dungeon was...

Open Grave Excerpt: Rituals and Artifacts

This book is like 4e Libris Mortis+! Alternative Powers will probably be new attacks or abilities for various monsters that they can gain by giving up an existing ability. Draconomicon has them for the various chromatics, also at the very end of the book. No, I used them in my old 3e games...

    Things I don't like about the 4E DMG - part 1 of 1000

If my players had used scrying at several stages of the Age of Worms or Savage Tide adventure path a lot of surprises would have been spoiled. If the PCs had seen Greyhawk's legendary first death knight before he came charging out on his massive steed I'd have been sorely pissed. Thankfully any...

    Things I don't like about the 4E DMG - part 1 of 1000

"Well, you can't use it when it would really be disruptful" is what the excerpt seems to be saying. I don't think the advice is so good though. If I'm trying to hide secrets from scrying PCs I'll block the scrying attempt with a Forbiddance spell or perhaps a more powerful...

    Action Point use - timing

I wouldn't allow my players to take a move action inbetween those two attacks, so I wouldn't allow them to take a free action either. A free action is still an action, and as far as I can tell you gotta resolve an action before moving on to another.

    Why do 4e combats grind?

The only predictable action I've seen IME is the rogue abusing Sly Flourish like a red-headed stepchild. My players most often use their encounter powers before their daily powers, but that's to be expected and about the only predictable element in their play. Oh, the friendly fire stuff -...

    Battlerager....Overpowered?

Whoever is closest! Or, whoever just stabbed me. I hate being stabbed. - Hydra As an aside, a friend of mine is playing a dwarf fighter and he switched to Battlerager w/Dwarven Stoneblood. The only fights he's been in since the change have largely been melee battles - one vs. displacer...
