    D&D 4E Homebrew 4e Character Flaws - Pirate Edition!

And a few more :-) * * * * * * * * * * Lone Wolf Flaw You do things your way: alone. Penalty: You cannot use the aid another action, and your allies cannot use the aid another action on you. You can't flank enemies, and your allies can count you when trying to flank enemies...

    D&D 4E Your 4e Bucket List

A book of themes, which would have all the existing ones (that are setting-neutral) and a bunch of new ones too, all balanced against each other. Wouldn't have to be a big product, but I'd like all that information in one physical source. Maybe include backgrounds too. A book of traps...

    D&D 4E Homebrew 4e Character Flaws - Pirate Edition!

So I've been working on a flaw system for my piratey 4e game, and thought I'd share it here. With some changes to the flavor it should be easy to adapt to other settings too. As far as the rules go . . . when you make your character, you may choose one (and only one) flaw. Picking a flaw...

What would you want in a book of naval rules?

I made a broad Seafaring skill for my homebrew pirates game. It covers helming a ship, signaling messages, navigation, rope use, and some other odds and ends (like playing Devil's Dice and speaking in grizzled sailor jargon). I replaced Dungeoneering for the setting, since the latter skill...

What would you want in a book of naval rules?

Also, some example naval encounters would be nice. Like some writeups for goblin raiders on catamarans, hobgoblin slave longboats, or organic submersibles powered by mind flayers. Last Thing: Fantasy Flight's Seafarer's Handbook has a lot of food for thought, particularly in the ship designs.

What would you want in a book of naval rules?

I'd like to see some nautical skill challenges. Maybe one for sailing / navigation, weathering a storm, or keeping a crippled ship afloat. I could see one player at the bilge pump, another putting out a fire, a third pulling a crew member that fell overboard. Different positions PCs could...

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

And while I'm at it, paying for your character options / feats / powers by taking attack / damage penalties would be . . . sad.

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

I still don't get the need for a scaling complexity level within each character. 3rd edition is a fairly complex rules system (see number of skills, feat prereqs, number of modifier types, size of stat blocks), but that was also the golden years for D&D and sales were great. Complexity was not...

D&D 5E (2014) Has 5E Restored or Diminished Your Faith in WotC?

Eh, can't say I'm all that pleased. It's way too soon for a new edition--4e has a lot of life left, especially on the heels of Essentials. And the early snippets of 5e sound like the designers didn't care for any of the advances made in 4e (from the refined skill system, the way combat and...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

I like the emphasis on themes and backgrounds, but the bit on stats and skills just seem like bad ideas. 4e has pretty much the right skill list for D&D--its lean, condensed, and covers about everything you'll encounter on the average adventure. So . . . that's getting trading for tons of...

    Relevant Orcs

On the flipside, this could mean your first-level party could take on things like ogres, trolls, umber hulks, and whatnot in small enough quantities. I'm at least of the opinion that those increasing numbers are an important part of what makes you feel more powerful when you level. At 10th...

    D&D 4E Homebrew 4e Stunts and Maneuvers

Thanks! :) Before I forget, here's a few feats I made to go along with the maneuvers. - - - - - - - - - - Canny Maneuvers Heroic Tier Benefit: You get a +2 feat bonus to attack with the first stunt you attempt in an encounter. Counterstrike Heroic Tier Benefit: When you take the total...

    D&D 4E Homebrew 4e Stunts and Maneuvers

Hi guys, I've been working on a homebrew stunt system to inject some swashbuckling flavor for my 4e pirates game. The basic goal is to give players some additional fun--if risky--options in combat, and codify these maneuvers more than me making up things on the spot (but I expect to do that...

D&D 5E (2014) Which of these settings do you want to see for D&D Next?

All I have to say is . . . Spelljammer!

    Legends & Lore 16 Jan 2012

Not that we know that much about it yet, but I'm not sure the design goal of D&D Next is even a good one. No game can, or should, be all things to all people. And having each player independently choosing what level of rules to use just seems like it would be messy in play. Do some characters...
