    Arcane Gate tactic question :)

I loathe that rule. There is a perception skill it should be used in combat as well. I want people to come up with tricks, this rule really narrows the range of options IMO. Like you, I'd make it a bluff check to kind of shoe horn it into the rules. I almost over use bluff so people can go...

items that are just better (aka power creep)

I'll agree that the levels are off a bit for there items under the system that is in place. But when two items and one is better are the same level, sometimes it works. There is only so much gradation you can have with 30 levels. Sure an item is strictly better but is it 1 levels worth...

    Sweet Spot in AD&D1

I never really bumped into the sweet spot issue until 3e. I never felt the wizard outclassed the rest to the point where they were just henchman, well except maybe a single class thief. They were more powerful at high levels, but weaker at low levels. And with their weaknesses the level...

    Wizard Sleep CSR Ruling

I could care less if he's is an orb wizard or something else. Its the -5 to -9 all the time I find absurd. Level 8 a -5 to all will saves, -4 to all saves, level 18 -7 to will saves, -5 to all saves, level 28 -9 to will saves, -6 to all saves. Yeah you can't perma shut down the solos, but you...

    Wizard Sleep CSR Ruling

Yeesh then you could have like a consistent -9 to will saves. none of this once a encounter nonsense or one target only, -9 to all will saves, all the time. Yeah, that wont be seeing the light of day in my games. Yeah its high level, but even a -5 through -6 of lower levels is well...

Hit Points & Healing Surges Finally Explained!

I can't think of many situations where the damage is described as bad and a short rest later they are fine and dandy. Most attacks usually are near misses or scratches. While books where people get run through and seem fine moments later exist they are not common in my experience. Now I'm a...

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

For me there side benefits are the smallest for two reasons, one not massively impressive, and two very situational. The very situational part bothers me because it means I have to put extra work into my encounters so the wizard can look decent. I don't have to do that for any of the other...

ANy easy, good way to un-nerf magic items in 4th ed?

Edit: my response was angry so I'll take it out.

Can sustained conjurations and zones fly?

Even with that most of my party would miss a lot, or just get a few shots before they ran out of ammo. Outside the ranger Dex just isn't there so bows and other easy ammo weapons are a miss, and when it comes to strength weapons well there are only so many you can carry. Yup, I'd hate to see...

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

I don't know about others, but I have looked at that. Those side effects to damage while useful, contribute less to the success of the party than every other side effect from the other roles.

ANy easy, good way to un-nerf magic items in 4th ed?

The +1 bonus is basically the same as the gloves of burglary power which is a level 1 item. Maybe adding Str checks on top of that would bump it up to a level 2 power, but since most strength checks other than just lifting crap is under athletics, not so much IMO. And the +5 to damage, well...

ANy easy, good way to un-nerf magic items in 4th ed?

I'd say the current gauntlets of ogre power are not a level 5 item but a level suck item. If a power is a daily whether it comes form an item or a players, it should be something that you want to save because its so awesome you don't want to waste it unless you really need it.

Can sustained conjurations and zones fly?

I'd rule it based on the special effect of the spell. And I'd do pretty much what Toriel suggested. Got to say its a corner case but it makes me appreciate magic missile a bit more. Yeesh, 20 square aura. Other than the ranger I'd hate to see my parties odds of hitting with a ranged basic...

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

I've seen a lot of mashing in fiction as well, or if there was a theme it wasn't totally locked in concepts. Necromancers might have lightning bolts or could teleport and transform people. They may be heavily focused on somethings and do the rest worse than other specialists, but they had the...

Magic deadly to the caster and allies

I loved that stuff, it kept magic magical for me. Once it got reliable it just became a tool. That is why. Also, what RFisher said.

You could always earthdawn it and say there is some magic in all of the powers.

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

I think they needed a nerf, and I don't argue that. Though I do think the needed nerf is not that much in raw power, but in the power of unusual combinations or a handful of broken spells. Also in 3e they didn't think through charged items IMO. I think in 3e a wizard could be totally balanced...

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

Things have to be set up for them almost too perfectly for them to be decent. They do weak sauce damage to a group, but since there is friendly fire, its ends up being just weak sauce damage way too often. There control side effects are fairly pathetic, and probably contribute the least to the...

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

They are probably the weakest class in the game now, so yeah I'd say they are nerfed. They are more balanced than they were at 3e, if you were using the spellcasters in 3e to there fullest. So, they probably needed a nerf, or at least they needed some serious loop hole, unintended consequences...
