    Balance when dropping 'automatic' spells?

Sounds totally reasonable. Full casters can be hit with huge nerf sticks without lowering them down to non-caster level. What you're doing is using a tiny nerf twig.

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

Well, there a lot more options for players and DMs with 3rd Ed. It is also much harder for the DM to prepare NPCs and monsters than 4.0. Arcane Power: How long before the pirated copy appears

Oh. That's not a replacement at all for paper or PDF copy of a rule book. Big fail for WotC.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

ExploderWizard, have you tried C&C? It is much closer to actual D&D than 4.0 and has the flavor that made D&D a worldwide phenomenon.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

Must be some new direction. In 30+ years I've never seen it. Whether it was playing with the creator of RPGs, tournament play, etc., etc. Safe to say it wasn't a design consideration of the 1st 4 editions...

Can charisma be something more than just dump stat?

I use a reaction mod whenever someone with a minus or plus interacts with NPCs over something meaningful. I'm surprised to see that some DMs don't.

Arcane Power: How long before the pirated copy appears

I don't think so. But, there are MANY studies that show the effect of NOT selling what the market is demanding...

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

Wrong definition. I am talking about what the cause of an effect is. NOT the frequency of encountering said cause. Totally different.

Can charisma be something more than just dump stat?

That's why I love the C&C saving throw system...

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

Yes, the mental contortions used to call something "not magic" are simply amazing.

How Important is Magic to Dungeons and Dragons? - Third Edition vs Fourth Edition

People are still arguing that taking control of someones body at a distance isn't "magic"? ROFL. Well, it's good for comedy relief.

Can charisma be something more than just dump stat?

Hmm, I've never had a sorc, bard or Pali use it as a dump stat.

How much do characters know about game mechanics?

In my world? Well, characters know that as wizards practice their arts they gain knowledge and abilities and gain control over more powerful magic. Clerics, as they continue to further their gods aims and goals in ever increasingly challenging situations, are granted more powers. As fighters...

Sorting out costs to acquire a tiger "pet"

If there is a threat ie: the tiger is getting out of control, you can't take 10. If you are in a battle situation you couldn't either.
