What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

Good call. Enhance ability is the obvious one that comes to mind, but I checked the description and it actually doesn't raise your scores, it just gives you advantage on checks (and a few other benefits specific to different scores, such as temporary hit points). Does anyone know any examples of...

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

That's what I've been doing, for the most part. Only because you clearly stated that you were speaking from your experience as a player, and I wanted to know if your GM had had any ideas that might be of use to me. No goal-post moving was intended. Anyhow, my gripe wasn't directed at you. I...

What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

Why are you telling me this? Do you think it's something I don't already know? Houserules are all well and good, but as I've already stated twice, they're not what I was asking about. Actually, that's already a rule, unless you're using encumbrance rules (which are explicitly described as a...

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

Some of you seem to have the wrong idea about why I started this thread. I'm not asking from the perspective of a player who's trying to wheedle the GM into giving me something I want in exchange for something I don't want. I'm asking from the perspective of a (potential) GM who doesn't care for...

What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

That's a very good question. I checked the description of Greater Restoration, and it explicitly lists as one of its uses, the removal of "Any reduction to one of the target's ability scores." If there's any other way to regain the lost Intelligence, I too would like to know what it is. (Btw, I...

    D&D General D&D Pronunciation Guide

So how do you pronounce Shou Lung? Does the Shou rhyme with shoe, show or chow?

    D&D General D&D Pronunciation Guide

According to the official PS pronunciation guide (a collection of WAV files which I downloaded years ago from the Wizards website), it's pronounced giNAHsee. Although personally I think it should be pronounced with a soft G (i.e. jiNAHsee) because the word was originally derived from genie.

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

As Tony Vargas has already pointed out, scale mail + 14 Dex is just as good as chain mail + 14 Str. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned.

What about spare the dying as a bonus cantrip, useable at 30 feet?

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

Hmm... still not exactly thematic to the particular domains, but if a cleric absolutely *must* have some sort of defensive ability in that slot, I like it better than heavy armor proficiency. I'm not sure that's really necessary since divine strike can be used on any weapon attack (not just...

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

If you think the cleric is just fine the way it is, more power to you. Personally, I've never been overly enamored with clerics as "platemail wearing defenders of the faith" (doesn't the paladin already have that covered)? And if heavy armor proficiency is that essential to clerics, shouldn't...

Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

I'm not crazy about the fact that so many of the standard cleric domains have heavy armor proficiency, even when it makes little or no sense thematically. It just seems like lazy design, as if they couldn't think of anything better. Problem is, *I* can't think of anything better either. (Or...

What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

I didn't realize there were so many corner cases. I'm thinking this information could come in handy for other people besides me. If I compiled them into a list, is there a good place to post it where people would be able to locate it easily as a reference tool? (I haven't been very active here...

Worlds of Design: How Would You Design For Spelljammer?

I have a Spelljammer-Fading Suns crossover which has been percolating in my brain for years; one of these days I may get around to actually typing it all up for public consumption. Here's an overview of the key elements: - Crystal spheres are out, replaced by a system of jumpgates. However...

A Crunchy Take On Conan From Modiphius Entertainment

Um, yeah. I can see that. But the fact that it's right at the top of the front page, under the heading "News Updates", with an opening line that says "Modiphius Entertainment has released their take on the character of Conan," as if it's something that just happened... well, it creates a false...

What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

Here's a list of all cases, outside of character creation, where either the player or the GM needs to know the ability score (as opposed to ability modifier) of their PC or another creature. General - Each class grants periodic increases to your ability scores. - Some feats require a minimum...
