    D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on 10 hour Marathon Session of 5E

Thanks for the kind words, chibi. The LoMP game is with guys I've been playing with since college (we are all in our mid 40s). We dabbled as a group in 3.5, but only played a session or two of 4th. 15 years ago I moved about 100 miles away from them, so this is the first time we've played...

    D&D 5E (2014) Realms Recent History

I am creating a campaign using the 4th ED. Neverwinter campaign guide. I did not run anything realms based during 4th ed. However, this guide is very impressive, one of the best Realms based guides that has been written. The only thing I am struggling with is what effect the sundering has on the...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Evhelm, remember that Thunderwave is a cube area of effect, not a sphere. Consequently, you can't affect all monsters that "surround" your character, only the ones that fit in a cube that the caster stands on it's side.

    D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on 10 hour Marathon Session of 5E

TPK. Time of death of party, 3:20am Sunday, November 9th, 2014. Cause of death, stupidity. Secondary cause of death, Black Spider, 4 Giant Spiders, Bugbear and Doppleganger. Location of Death, Room 19 Wave Echo Cavern. Text from the party Wizard the next day, "New rule, no new battles after...

    D&D 5E (2014) SCROLLS Questions

Actually, it wasn't the "former rule." It was never the rule. Unfortunately, when they changed the wording of the rule from the playtest and the Starter Box rules in the first basic rules, they worded it badly to make it seem like anyone could use a scroll as long as they made the proper Arcana...

    D&D 5E (2014) Likes and Dislikes?

I love the vast majority of the rules, but mostly the speed of combat. One thing that irks me somewhat, however, are how at most tables I've played or DMed 5th Ed, the rogue does not find traps particularly well. It's odd, but does anyone else notice that clerics are the "trapfinders" of the party?

    D&D 5E (2014) Full preview unlocked!

Could you explain how having more pages devoted to rule customization than pages devoted to the rules of the game itself is not delivering on their statement they would provide ways to customize your game?

    D&D 5E (2014) 5' Step and AoO

Ranger, let's be clear here, it isn't your interpretation, it's your house rule. The rules allow a PC to take the disengage action and move anywhere (both away from and towards enemies) and not provoke Opportunity Attacks. They also are giving up their action (attack or spell) by doing so. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

Our party used the pre-gens. The Folk Hero's background included her knowledge that a green dragon has taken up residence in Thundertree. Even if they did not have advance warning, as soon as Riedoloth tells them about the dragon, the cleric would have insisted on taking a long rest to get that...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Challenge Ratings of dragons accurate in 5ED&D?

The dragon's effectiveness is significantly upgraded by Lair Actions.

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

But what if the NPC actually doesn't have a beard? I do agree that nerfing someone's PC by requiring them to use the Player's capabilities instead of their PC stats is wrong, but your job as a DM is to describe the world to the PCs. If the NPC doesn't have a beard, not changing that because a PC...

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

No, they drove her off, didn't kill her. Clearly the Poison Protection saved their collective butts. If you have a cleric and you know you are going against a Green dragaon, NOT to have that cast on your party is per se negligence and will subject the party to multiple civil lawsuits!

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

Neb, Don't be surprised if your party does attack the dragon, and don't be surprised if your 3rd level party ends up defeating him/her. I posted what happened in mine, and I set it up similarly to your set up (I had the druid act as a healer and not a thrall of the dragon). Sometimes PCs do the...

D&D 5E (2014) How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Yes, it is a change. If a creature is at zero hp and unconscious, then any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Therefore, if Cyanwrath hits you to zero and you drop, then the module specifically states he gives you another blow while...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragon Lairs and Lair Actions

As far as how long, I would probably want the dragon to be there for a time that would make sense that the lair actions would develop. As far as the area, I would probably make it an area that would be reasonable for a dragon of a particular size to hold sway over.

D&D 5E (2014) When Monsters and NPCs take a Short Rest

You mean YOUR story is the thing, not the PCs. My players would be furious if I kept the Ogre alive, despite the fact they dropped him, because I wanted to keep going some preconceived "story" I wanted to tell. Why even have the PCs roll, just tell them what result you want?

D&D 5E (2014) How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Interesting thread. I am running a an AL group through HotDQ at our FLGS. The players are having a blast! We have a nice mixture of experienced players, newbies, PFers changing over, Old Skoolers coming back to mainstream D&D, etc. Every session is full of excitement, laughter, tension and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Our Thundertree Experience (SPOILERS)

Details behind the spoiler block: Our Thundertree expedition lasted for hours. Afterwards, my players (who haven't played D&D in about a decade) said it was one of the most memorable D&D experiences of their life (and we've been playing together since the mid 1980's). I used the "cultists stole...
