D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

The owner of my FLGS is claiming he can't even order more PHB's at this point as his distributor is sold out.

D&D 5E (2014) The Art of the Secret Door

Mist, that was an awesome read in the DMG back in the day. However, the problem is balancing the players descriptions of what exactly they are doing and not allowing a PC with a high wisdom or intelligence to find something that the player themselves wouldn't. In other words, a "genius" wizard...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

I prefer to make my monsters do what I want them to do based on their abilities, lore (and other info in the MM), and their context in the environment. Personally, I think that having a ton of "special abilities" actually hamstrings DMs and make each encounter with a particular monster very...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Evocation Specialist what spells to have at lvl 3?

Not with separate attack rolls. MM specifically states it hits the target simultaneously.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Evocation Specialist what spells to have at lvl 3?

Thunderwave, sculpted, is good. Scorching Ray is fantastic, especially at higher levels when you can use your Int modifier on each ray. Misty Step and Shield are good defensive spells, but Mirror Image is the best (IMO), as it is not a concentration spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) Exhaustion XXXploitz!!!

Frankly, if the party cannot defeat a superior foe through force of arms or magical prowess, but is able to maneuver the enemy into such a predicament that he/she becomes exhausted, and thus easily defeat-able, then that is fantastic role playing!

    D&D 5E (2014) Sleep Spell 1st-Level, No-Save Death Spell?

In actual play it is a good spell, but certainly not overpowering.

    D&D 5E (2014) [5e Monster] Mushropod--composting at its best

Very cool, although the 8 tentacle attacks per turn may be a bit much. Definitely may use it in my upcoming campaign. Thanks!

D&D 5E (2014) Thundertree (5ed Starter Box Set) Possible Spoilers

We are actually going to start over from level one after LMoP, but we are basing it in the realms out of Neverwinter. Consequently, what the PCs do in Thundertree will have a direct impact on their new campaign with new PHB characters. It will be interesting to see...

    D&D 5E (2014) So who is playing 5E?

I run AL play at a FLGS weekly. I also am DMing LMoP for a group of guys I have gamed with since the late 80s. Finally, I am playing in a homebrew FR campaign based out of Neverwinter. Haven't enjoyed D&D this much since 2E.

3E began the "it's too much work to have multiple PCs" era.

D&D 5E (2014) (More) ruminations on the future of D&D

I read a "report" recently that someone on these boards posted from a gamer pamphlet that was published right after the Origins Convention (or was it GenCon?) when Gygax debuted G1. Basically, the game report read like a first hand account of the initial landings on Omaha Beach. I specifically...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

I can't find the exact quote, but one of the developers stated that a CR means you shouldn't even put that monster in an encounter unless the party is at least that level!

    D&D 5E (2014) Unfortunate Wording

It has been confirmed that my gut instinct was correct. It was unfortunate wording and we don't have to worry about 1st level barbarians having a one in ten chance of casting meteor swarms. @Plaguescarred DMBasic p60 saysspell scroll can be cast by anyone but StarterSet p53 say not anyone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bless and Bane spell

Bryk, perhaps if the PCs notice the enemy actually casting, I would allow them a "free" arcana check to see if they know what spell is being cast. If it is cast before the PCs enter the area and it has a visible or visceral effect, the I would give a passive check. But if it is already cast...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unfortunate Wording

Are you guys serious? Look at the Starter set rules, then look at the higher level "use magic device" ability of the Thief Archetype, which would be seriously lessened. What other rule is so dramatically different between the starter set rules and the basic rules? I'm mystified that so many...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

I concur, wholeheartedly, that the AP's are a major draw of PF. Frankly, I'm very tempted to base my upcoming 5E home campaign in Golarion instead of the Realms, it's that good. Maybe my experience here in the heartland is different than yours, but most of the PFers around here moved to PF due...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unfortunate Wording

Under using scrolls, the rule states: "If the spell written on the scroll appears on your class’s spell list, and the spell’s level is one that you can normally cast, you cast the spell successfully. Otherwise, you must make an Intelligence (Arcana) check to see if you can successfully cast...
