    Cantrips as encounter powers?

He wasn't testing your ability to make a 4e ruling, he was demonstrating that "encounter" is a bad fit for more organic events.

Not remotely where I would have expected it, haha. Awesome, thanks! Guess I wasn't around when the announcement was made.

    Cantrips as encounter powers?

Encounter powers are very unpopular with 3.5ers, and even 4ers seem to find encounter powers to feel like a rather arbitrary restriction. I do, however, support your desire to make at-wills not be completely unlimited, and to encourage players to rotate between them. Prior to coming up with my...

    Alternative to Vancian / AEDU

Has something like this been done before? Prepare all your spells Use them at-will for appropriately minor effects You can Tap your magic to empower one of your prepared spells, but must wait for an hour before you have the juice to "tap" again (doesn't need to be a rest per se, it's just a...

    Meta--WOTC Banner Add

+1, gents. It makes me smile every time! Glad there's a forum in which it can be brought up and giggled about.

    What happened to subscribed threads?

They used to be in a drop-down menu next to my name. I promise I've been occasionally poking around trying to find them for the past couple weeks, but I'm at wit's end, so I've decided to look foolish by asking here! :(

    Move - Attack - Move

I wouldn't double it up, mlund. i'd just make it one or the other, at the stationary combatant's option - If a creature enters and leaves a threatened square in the same turn, you can as a reaction choose to Hamper their defense (get Advantage against them on your next attack) or Harry them...

    The Randomness of the D20

You don't get tired of seeing one monster's decent hide check opposed by 5 players' (and sometimes their pets') wildly-randomized spot checks? Or similar results on a bluff/insight check. Or an opposed intelligence check. Even if the PC with the godly bonuses whiffs horribly, someone else will...

    Spiritual Hammer Question

Shocking grasp is also a "melee" attack. Don't get hung up on wording, just keep in mind that you're using a spell to make an attack.

    The Randomness of the D20

I like how 5e fixes "certain to succeed" checks by granting auto-success based on your score. What if it also fixed "certain to fail" checks by granting score-based auto-fails? I'm thinking especially of moments where a character with a good Wisdom score and +3 to Perception from their...

    Probability question: Advantage and Disadvantage

So, OnlineDM, if you park someone with the Guardian theme behind whichever character is currently taking a beating, you push crits off of the combat table. Now you don't have to worry about sudden, horrific spike damage removing your friend from the waking world - just try to manage the incoming...

    D&D 5E (2014) Armor in D&DNext

It's all bringing back memories of 3.5, where everyone was in a Chain Shirt, or Full Plate, because medium armor sucked. Sometimes breastplate got used, only because Mithril changed it to Light class armor, making it less :):):):):):).

With the experience of multiple previous editions, why's Dexterity STILL an uberstat?

Wizard: Can get respectable AC with 14 dex. Certain spells, or Background, Race, or Theme can easily make him a strong member of a stealthy "surprise party". Cleric: With 16 dex, has same AC as heavy armor user, but without the speed penalty. Use finesse weapons no prob. If using the array, Wis...

D&D 5E (2014) Notes from the underground: a few opening thoughts about D&D Next or 5e.

Not sure how "javelin of fire... again" is any worse than "attack with my sword... again". Hopefully with the toned-down Sleep, M-U players won't be derided for choosing other spells for a change. :)

With the experience of multiple previous editions, why's Dexterity STILL an uberstat?

The AC situation looks worse than what I remember from 4e and 3.5 as well. With a minor Dex investment, light/medium apear to be in the same ballpark as heavy AC + shield. With an 18-20 Dex, you're better off, even without shield.

With the experience of multiple previous editions, why's Dexterity STILL an uberstat?

It still determines: AC Init Some attack rolls Some powerful "checks" (ie Stealth, ie Surprise Rounds) The most frequently mentioned Saving Throw, thus probably the most important one Init could easily be Wisdom: perceive first, notice the most, and you'll be able to react first and best. We...

    The playtest has begun

I just pored through all my email addresses just in case I'd given WotC the wrong one. Did you make sure to beat the CAPTCHA in the signup process? I think I may have closed the window after giving my email address, but before seeing the CAPTCHA. Headdesking so hard right now. I've re-signed...

Has anyone actually downloaded the files yet? Not that the answer is important, but it increases my glee and anticipation.
