Ryan Dancey Answers to OGL questions

Yet more technical legal questions. I understand if no one wants to answer, and I certainly expect Ryan won't want to wallow in this mess, but it's just that it's apparently a thread to ask questions on the OGL and I'm currently reviewing some such designations. Unfavorably. Which raises some...

Ryan Dancey Answers to OGL questions

This is the first time I've seen the CC licenses discredited like this. I'll certainly take it under advisement. Having re-read the cc-by-sa license, I agree that it's more confusing (and verbose) than the OGL. I'm wondering, though - if you could issue an OGL v2.0a, what changes would you...

Is there a Birthright type D20 game out there?

In addition to the fan-created conversion linked to above, the WotC book Powers of Faerun seems to touch on similar topics. I get the impression that it's far less comprehensive, however, and hardly a combination with another more strategic game system. Another relevant work is Dynasties and...

Ryan Dancey Answers to OGL questions

Ryan: A question related to your signature. Is there a reason the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license isn't listed in the open gaming foundation's recommended licenses? Thanks again for all the replies. It's always a pleasure to read your thoughts. :)

Ryan Dancey Answers to OGL questions

I see. Then it does follow that one could release the game mechanic as open content without releasing its expression. Interesting. Thanks a lot for your reply :) Yair

    Hiding & Sniping

Thanks all for your comments. I'm afraid I still haven't decided how best to approach things - change the sniping rules, or change the "hiding while attacking" rule. I'll try to get a hold of Complete Adventurer and read up what he says on the subject.

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I agree. If the material is free for the public to use under copyright law, then you can use it with disregard to the OGL. The OGL only lessens some protections of copyrights, it cannot override copyright law. However, the material is not free for public use under copyright law. If you would...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I actually hate this stand. Copyright infringement isn't theft. In other news, burglary is not murder, larceny is not mugging, and causing property damage isn't assault. We have different rules and terms for a reason, folks.

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I just want to say that I find Chaos Disciple lecturing Jim Hague on copyright legalities hillarious.

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Ryan, I'm hoping you'd take the time to comment on a little related question of mine. Since you were heavily involved in the drafting of the OGL, I have a question about it's phrasing and how it relates to the whole "are game mechanics copyrightable" aspect. In Section 1d of the OGL, it says...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Yeah, I was apparently confusing it with fair use... ...but fair use applies to reviews, education, and so on - not to fun gaming. :)

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I'm not a lawyer nor a publisher, but I've thought about these matters a bit. So here's my take. Chaos Disciple - you might be right. If you only copy the game mechanics, not the text, of the D&D game/SRD then you're not violating copyright per se. Except that, as Ryan Dancey said, you might...

    OGC Index?

I don't believe so. d20 is flagging due to loss of interest from the public, experience with poor quality d20 products, and an overabundance of products that satiates the public's needs. It isn't failing because 3rd party materials aren't comaptible with Wizard's; for the most part, they are...

    OGC Index?

Yes, cooperative projects often do fall apart, don't they? Strangely enough, the ogexchange.com domain now says "This domain has just been registered for one of our customers!". I wonder who is planning to do what with it, and how does "just" stand for... Unless someone brings up such a site...

    OGC Index?

Is there a site that indexes what OGC is out there? I'm thinking of a place that gives what products contain what OGC, where to find good OGC on gods, and so on. Not the actual content, but a discussion of it. Here is an example entry, to clarify what I'm talking about: Arcana Evolved Arcana...

    Hiding & Sniping

Why snipe? The SRD says "It’s practically impossible (-20 penalty) to hide while attacking". Sniping also imposes -20 to Hide, but also takes a move action, allows you to make only one attack, and has further limitations (must be 10 feet away). Why use it? Going by the first line, a person...

    The Monster Manual 5

:\ Texture is your friend. Imagine living in a world without texture. Oh, the horror! Seriously, what pictures are you talking about? I like most of the pictures, and don't find that the textures prevent seeing the details. Consider the Thoon Elder Brain by Dave Allsop, just being the first...

    Best OGC non-rules content?

All this discussion got me thinking about an OGC index. Just telling which products contain what OGC. Is there such a thing? Eh, don't pitch the E6 system itself, however, as that is already available. Their guidelines say "We do not accept any submissions previously published by or...

    Best OGC non-rules content?

I also found PBWiki to be accomodating in terms of license; that's why my Ars Magica wiki is there. As to how to convert - no, I'm afraid I don't really know. You could always cut & paste, of course.

    Attacking the Thief-Guild

Excellent advice. I'll definitely use it - for the next guild. This one's called "Alleybashers" - and that's about as sophisticated as they are. They're more into bullying than into subterfuge. If they go after the Last Laugh, though, I'll definitely follow your advice. They're more subtle. As...
