    Warlove? Warhate?

Don't like it, not even a little bit. :) To begin with, I don't like the concept of having a "leader" class in and of itself. The assumption that if there's a Warlord in the party then my character will defer to his leadership and advice in combat, doesn't sit well with me at all. Writing rules...

    MM excerpt: phane

A mastermind that solves problems by hitting things. It has melee and close-range burst abilities, and nothing else - you can declare that in your game, it's a mastermind, but you could do the same thing with a high-level fighter with decent Int, with about as much justification. (And since...

    MM excerpt: phane

I really don't buy this "the 3.5 version of the monster was too complex, so the only reasonable solution was to strip it down to the point where all it does is damage + a special effect" philosophy. Yes, high-level 3.5 play was too complex, but it's silly to say that this extreme level of...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

IIRC, it's actually an Epic tier monster, so assuming that the PCs (and their allies) are all going to be Medium sized is a bit of a stretch. And if I had a dime for every time I either played in a game or read about a game that had some kind of three-way conflict with monsters fighting other...

    Is this offensive?

In other words, your reasons amount to "because I say so" or "because I feel strongly about it". Exactly the sort of irrational thought I'm talking about. Thanks for proving my point, I guess?

A heavy warhorse is also Large, so it has double the carrying capacity of a 18 Str Medium creature, +4 on lots of strength-based checks, and natural weapons that don't just inflict sudual damage. The system is actually a lot less vague than you're trying to present it as, and strength has a...

 Men's and women's gymnastics aren't even the same sport... And men's gymnastics is probably the most upper body strength oriented sport, ever.

    Beholder in Seattle

It is the one from Gencon. Even got a picture of a friend of mine sticking his head into its maw... It's big, but it's not Macy's parade baloon huge. Those squares on the floor are 5'. It was a neat setup - they had the troll, the beholder, a "life-size" battlemat and some appropriately scaled...

Gamers and Theatre: Is There a Connection?

No theatrical background whatsoever. I've had almost uniformly bad experiences with people with "acting backgrounds" and RPGs. Most of the ones I'd run into were a bunch of drama queens (no pun intended), attention hogs and borderline solipsists... Though to be fair, virtually all of those...

    Is this offensive?

Right. An 8% difference in any kind of high-end competitive athletic event is enormous - not big, literally off the charts - because it's a matter of diminishing returns. It takes a lot more than 8% more strength and endurance to run, swim, row, bike, whatever, 8% faster than someone else who's...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

What I really don't like about the whole Trident bit is the fact that it has three different effects (damage, involuntary movement, knockdown) and not only are they all determined by a single roll (which I don't agree with in principle, but whatever, it's the whole simplicity thing, I can...

    Is this offensive?

I'd recommend that anyone who thinks the strength difference between men and women isn't especially large - or has to do with cultural bias - look up the world weight-lifting records sometime, and compare the men's and women's scores. These are all professional athletes who strength train for a...

Which would actually be perfectly consistent with what we've seen of a lot of 4E design so far.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Not really. It's trivial either way. So should I ignore the fact that you're quoting that out of context so you can post a snarky one-line reply? Just because you don't need something all of the time, it doesn't mean that it's not worth having. The 4E design team is pre-ignoring the rules...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

...your 3.5 books came with a guy who'd hold a gun to your head, forcing you to do that? The skills either matter or they don't, depending on how you're going to use the monster/NPC. If they do matter, then it's an advantage to have a rule for assigning them, rather than pulling numbers out of...

Twilight:2000... tell me your likes and dislikes

The problem with Twilight 2000 for me is the one that a native will always have when some well-meaning but ultimately clueless author decides to set a piece of fiction in your country or city. I just can't take it seriously, and all the mistakes, misspellings and cheesy attempts to use the...

    Shadorun without the shadowrun rules

I took that character in a funny direction, actually. He's great at combat (what with all that Karma) but I started him of with quite high Willpower and kept pumping points into it. (we spent a loooong time in Bug City, it proved incredibly handy) He's up to 10. Encounters with hostile mages...

    Shadorun without the shadowrun rules

...I'm pretty sure that there's no way to get 6 points of reach, which is what you're describing. Off-hand, I'd say the most you'll get will be 3, and that's as a troll with a polearm. Which is why you shoot trolls with polearms. With a grenade launcher. :)

    Shadorun without the shadowrun rules

Yep. I've got a street sam I've played for a long time (approaching the 250 karma mark) who might be able to do it, but really wouldn't care to try. ...it's actually funny how over the course of that game, he ended up developing into a charismatic negotiator type who usually tries to talk...
