Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

Re: Atomic Pope You can name drop all you want - it's not going to make you right. :) (And I'm sorry, but trying to lend your JJ experiences authority by mentioning Mark Kerr... doesn't really help. It's about as impressive as Dean Lister teaching boxing.) You mention Liddell - but he's a...

Forked Thread: Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

No, it can't. You're choosing to show some highlights and overlook the typical - and even those really don't make your case. The spectacular "I've only seen that in demonstrations!" finishes might look cool, but in MMA they're the exception, not the rule - for every fight ended with a flying...

Should NPCs Have to Follow the Same Rules as PCs?

I believe that NPCs should only follow different rules than the PCs if they're more plot device than character. Need the prophet of some long-forgotten god to be able to throw a few divination and healing spells around, to advance the storyline? No problem. Want some mad alchemist to blow...

Does performing Trip attempts every round ruin Suspension of Disbelief?

Well... not quite. First, these days, you have more and more people who really are multi-discipline fighters, so the "striker vs. grappler" thing is more of a feature of the old UFC. (though it's not gone yet, by any stretch) Second, you actually have at least two primary types of grapplers...

Does performing Trip attempts every round ruin Suspension of Disbelief?

What if you want to, say... trip the same non-minion guy 2 or 3 times, all in one fight? Or you want to use trips and disarms as a delaying tactic, without knocking people unconscious? Both of those are pretty much a staple in cinematic wuxia-inspired combat.

Does performing Trip attempts every round ruin Suspension of Disbelief?

Agreed. I've seen plenty of fights which went to the ground repeateadly, despite the fact the guy getting dropped knew it was coming, and he'd gotten caught that way 3 or 4 times already. So, no, it doesn't break my suspension of disbelief in the slightest. I do think the 3.5 Trip mechanic...

They've had 12 levels of fun and can roll a new character? I mean, it's hardly the end of the world.

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

You could easily argue it's supposed to be "scary" because: 1. It's being done for all the wrong reasons - to hurt a small group of people instead of helping the population at large 2. It'd mean Syndrome won, and is fat, happy and in charge 3. Syndrome is an insane super-weapons dealer with...

    I hate game balance!

Doing something you knew you weren't going to like and then pouting about it is. No, it's not, but plenty of the posts in the first couple of the pages of the thread are. Besides, maybe I already know what system I like, and just want to have a discussion.

    I hate game balance!

Probably. I'd say in the situation you describe, the people who decide to play the fighter even though they resent the ones playing the Cleric or the Wizard are the asshats. As for "stop complaining"... Sorry, I don't particularly feel like letting people get shouted down in the General forum...

    I hate game balance!

Because the "lopsidedly balanced" system has certain positive features that actually appeal to certain people? Like me, even though, as I said, I rarely play casters. Also, because "don't play with them" is not the only countermeasure to flaws in the system. (it's the only countermeasure to...

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

Huh? In the movie, superheroes get driven underground by an unappreciative, sheep-like public that can't handle the fact that some people are special. If the ending proves anything, it's the idiocy of stifling ability for the sake of conformity and not hurting anyone's feelings. (And it's also...

    I hate game balance!

Like I said in the part of my post you didn't quote, this is meaningless unless you're actually ok playing with asshats.

    I hate game balance!

Meh. Back before 4E was announced, it was quite common to see threads complaining about how - because of monsters' SR and high saves - a Wizard could hardly do any damage at high levels, and it all came down to someone beating the beastie down with a sword. Which doesn't really match my...

    I hate game balance!

...well, sorry, I just don't see D&D as special or important enough that I'd want to tolerate people I actually disliked for the sake of playing it. (I really, really like D&D, but the only place I'll tolerate spending a lot of time with people who piss me off is one where I get paid for it -...

    I hate game balance!

Ah, the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from having seen the impossible with my own two eyes. Truly, I have been blessed. I've seen 3E NPCs created in under 2 hours, high-level combats that didn't lead to any suicides, miscarriages or divorces, skill point allocation that didn't cause anyone...

    I hate game balance!

In that case, you could very well argue that since the people never change, any attempts to impose "balance" from on high aren't going to do much to solve this problem. The obvious solution, regardless of system, is to find people you're happy playing with. Frankly, I can't imagine gaming...

    I hate game balance!

Well, I agree with the OP, broadly speaking. I'm also really sick of the "CODzilla" hyperbole, and all the wailing and gnashing of teeth of people who apparently got beaten up by Wizards in grade school and had their milk money stolen. In all the time I've played D&D, I ran one long-term...
