What is Dungeons & Dragons "dungeon delve format?"

I think it works great if you simply want to run the adventure as written, in a fairly linear fashion. It's IMO not nearly as useful if you either want to use the published adventure as a base that you build on, or you use a more "sandbox" approach and things develop in a more freeform manner -...

How soon do you want more classes?

So what you're trying to say is that you don't like both the 3E and 4E Rangers, then?

How soon do you want more classes?

I don't think new classes are going to matter - unless they change the way they design them on a fundamental level (and I don't expect them to, of course) they'll just have slightly different combat powers from the current bunch, and the fluff text will change, but it still won't match what they...

    "That's not a realistic elf!"

Sure, but people who adhere strictly to an archetype are hardly the norm. Most people just approach the archetype casually and let other aspects of the character - class, personality, NPC contacts, goals, whatever - define that character in a variety of ways. On the other hand, the person who...

    "That's not a realistic elf!"

No, you can't call it "unrealistic", but I think those kinds of characters - that run counter to the stereotype in every way the player can think of - are beyond lame and show a complete lack of creativity. It's like having a petulant teenager in the party...

    Oots #569

Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough, but I found it fairly funny - mainly because of the way it kept getting worse every time Belkar tried to convince himself that it really wasn't so bad, since he clearly hates the Oracle having the last laugh more than the tangible consequences of the...

    Solo or Horde in D&D3

I'd say I used only one monster in maybe 10% of the D&D 3E/3.5 combats I ran, if that. Every time I did, it was literally a monster - I don't even remember the last time I ran a combat involving a single humanoid NPC vs. the party. I'd say at least 50% of the combats I ran would have 5 enemies...

    The Evolution of the Fighter

He said in the OP that he was expressing all AC in the same way, for easier comparison. (so 17 instead of 3, in this case)

    The Evolution of the Fighter

+1 to hit, +2 damage, 1 and 1/2 attacks per round, wasn't it? BTW, how are you doing the math on this? Since any of these fighters drop a goblin with one average hit, it seems like the extra damage of a specialized 2E fighter or a 3E fighter could get "wasted".

Henry's always been my favorite mod. :)

    "Fun"

...but I thought it wasn't all supposed to be about combat? Though in all fairness, everyone else - including the people who apparently made the game - seem to be confused as well.

    "Fun"

Missing the $%@#$#* forest for the trees, once again. Forget the guards, forget the stupid rations - the real issue is the "there's no fun to be had outside of a (combat) encounter" idea, which is idiotic advice in something claiming to be an RPG. These days, it's not even the prevalent trend...

A discussion of Keith Baker's post regarding the Skill Challenge system

...is it me, or does every one of these threads end up including the inevitable post about the Gambler's Fallacy from someone who doesn't get the statistics?

Removing permanent marker from a battlemap

I had really good results with candle wax once. I left it at someone's house after a game, they had a candle-lit dinner without rolling it up, the wax spilled, and after I got it scraped off the wax-covered patches were pristine. It just sucked all the dirt right up. (including some mistakes...

A new 4e poll please be honest

I have played it, don't own the books (though I have read through them) and I don't like 4E. This poll needs better options...

[True/False] There is a point in every campaign when the PCs come to blows.

In my experience, it doesn't happen most of the time - but it crops up often enough. In fact (like Batman ;)) I almost always end up having contingency plans for how best to take down all the other party members. You never know when they'll get mind-controlled, after all. (that, and it's a fun...

Dispelling the anti-4e misinformation and why 4e is the best ever!

Ah, yes. The good old "I don't get it, so it must be wrong." school of thought. Don't worry, the answer is simple - the defect lies with you, not all the people who don't like 4E.

    Skill Challenges for Dummies

And as far as the OP goes: Most of the relevant points have been covered already, but I think you're also hugely over-estimating the usefulness of Aid Another - the default assumption of how Skill Challenges work is that the PCs are making the checks alone, though the DM might use his...

    Skill Challenges for Dummies

Sorry, man, but you're still not making any sense. Who said anything about "balancing" things out? All I've seen is people calculate the actual probabilities. The math doesn't lie and it's not being misinterpreted.
