    Tissue-Paper Dungeons?

Of course, most normal players don't start to carve their way through solid stone unless the adventure itself is "boring and annoying". While the "adamantine spoon" bunch just sound like lunatics, I have yet to see a group of players decide to sit around rolling for damage to inanimate objects...

Any word on 4e from the big names?

None of the people who announced they're going to switch over to publishing 4E materials are going to give you an honest (negative) opinion on it. They'd be taking money out of their own pocket. The ones who aren't switching or are on the fence are probably going to come out and say something...

Is the 'Sweet Spot' really there?

The marketing was that "Every level is now the sweet spot!", which amounts to the same thing.

    Tissue-Paper Dungeons?

I love how "Real world? What does real world have to do with it? This is a game about FANTASY HEROES!" turns into "What? That's ridiculous, you'll break your weapon / need a mining pick / bring the ceiling down!" for some people the moment players try to get off the rails. Simple physical...

D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

Depends on what your standards are, I guess - there's around 80 wizard spells in total, and most would have been Evocation effects in 3.5. In fact, a huge number can be described by the following formula: (X + intelligence modifier of type Y damage) plus (status effect Z) that lasts for (one...

D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

I was talking about the fact that even though your character improves, the enemy bonuses keep pace so "perfectly" you're actually standing still - not about characters using the same abilities over and over. It looks like they've done such a good job, you could almost use a coin flip instead of...

    Telepor-falling

A 360lb rock is actually pretty small. IIRC a granite sphere weighing that much would only be 19"-20" in diameter. It'd take over 20 to fill a 5' square... I did the math once, and realized how appalingly strong a character would have to be to lift a rock big enough to make for a good fantasy...

D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

I was going to say that it probably won't take long before people realize their characters are just running on a treadmill and get bored, but then I thought of all the MMOs and "action RPGs" in which you do just that, and I'm no longer so sure... It sill sucks, though.

    20% item resale value: impossible!

Yeah. Cause it's just great when your "hero" trying to unload a magic blade found in a dragon's hoard gets a deal only a little better than if he was a crackhead at a pawn shop. The multiplier doesn't really matter in the long run, but it's silly to argue it's "realistic" because of the prices...

    Ranger is the new monk?

Feats certainly won't be a limiting factor, though. You get a ton of them, and most are rather underwhelming. You certainly will have plenty to spare for things like armor proficiency or extra healing surges.

How do I get them to switch?

In my experience, very few people appreciates attempts to convert them. Moreover, if you're friends, you really shouldn't be acting the salesman... Tell them straight up that you really like what you've seen so far of 4E, and would appreciate it if they'd give KotS or some other introductory...

The Unusual Math of Skill Challenges and Complexity

I guess the way to fix this would be to adjust the DCs and the ratio of success/failures required. Lower the DCs in order to give the players a better shot at succeeding on any given check, but then adjust the success/failure ratio to something other than 2:1 - basically, lower the number of...

    Trip? Disarm? Sunder? Gone forever?

First... The sins of 3.5 don't excuse the sins of 4E. It ought to be a banner on the top of the site. Second, I don't see that as being disingenuous - I see it as people wishing they actually fixed the issue, rather than avoiding it.

    Trip? Disarm? Sunder? Gone forever?

Don't you people get it? Since it's not in 4E, it couldn't have been important! So if your players ask about it, just make it so difficult that they'll only try once and then never bother you again. ;)

    Intimidate ..too good?

Who says enemies the PCs "kill" aren't just faking it, and don't get up and attack at an inconvenient moment? You don't do it (or don't do it more than once, anyway) for the simple reason that - in my experience, anyway - players really don't appreciate it when their successful actions get...

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

Well, a good thing in a sea of crap is still an aberration. I actually agree with you, I was just trying to word my post in a non-confrontational manner. I've got enough arguments going on in other threads. ;)

So is this indeed how it works?

Are you done patting yourself on the back? The reason you can imagine anything is precisely the reason why a game like D&D needs pre-determined rules. Anyone can be "creative" - as long as you don't care about the results. Hell, a gorilla can have an art show. But being creative and coming up...

    What's broken/overpowered? What's weak?

Disease is bizzare. It really stands out as pretty much the only thing that can cause long-term negative effects. Blindess, paralysis, recurring wounds causing damage, weakness, being slowed - and since you make checks when you take extended rests, all those things can last for days or hours...

So is this indeed how it works?

Tons of other things are big, powerful, smart, can fly and do elemental damage. In D&D Dragons needs something more to differentiate them from all the other big flying scare stuff besides being shaped like huge lizards. Especially if you stick with the fluff that D&D designers are still using...

Cure Disease will KILL YOU TO DEATH!

Poison no longer poses a serious threat of killing a PC. Neither do what used to be 7th-9th level spells. ...but disease is probably slightly more deadly than before and pretty much the only thing that can render a character non-functional. And that's ok? On top of that, trying to remove it...
