The worst of all editions? (humor)

My halfling fighter attacks the bugbear! Well, let's see. Roll a d20. Strength bonus, size penalty, weapon speed, sword versus chainmail modifier, modifier for HIS size, racial bonus, racial penalty, HIS racial bonus, HIS racial penalty, lighting condition, weapon condition, armor condition...

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

Right, but the real question is how long are people going to pay a subscription when they receive almost nothing?

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

First, about loyalty. You want WotC to show loyalty to the 4E fans. From their perspective, they are showing you loyalty by designing a new game for you. They want to please you. If you don't play 5E then that's on you, not them. From their perspective, at least. I've also thought of another...

    My support for healer classes

Have you played older editions? A healer was absolutely vital. You couldn't make or buy potions, so the only healing potions were ones you found. Healing through rest recovered a single hit point a day. Without a healer, you might have to go rest a week or more. Then, in every edition, there's...

Excited About Race / Class / Theme

Here's one of the things I like about the R/C/T style, the math regarding options. Let's say 5E mainly has R/C and theme is only an afterthought, not really an equal option. If we say 12 races and 17 classes that's 218 unique combinations. Not bad. But if R/C/T are equal choices, things...

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

I would imagine the point buy and array presented in 3.5 would still be used, or only tweaked slightly. It was chosen then as being equivalent to 4d6 drop lowest.

Would you get behind Race levels?

Huh? I am TOTALLY about keeping the options from interfering with each other. How does gaining more racial abilities over time change your option of character? I certainly wouldn't suggest that every level in Dwarf give you a bonus, but only if you're a fighter. The abilities or skill bonuses...

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

I don't think anyone is thinking there will be new content, just wondering how long support will be continued. The question, I think, is how much does bandwidth cost? Does supporting grognards slow down the site for the real customers, especially as things like VTT are implemented? Trust me, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Would it be breaking NDA to indicate if those 3 areas were about equal in size?

I might be remembering wrong, but wasn't it Fighter/Cleric/Magic-user?

Exploration: My concerns for the new edition

Oh, I agree. I was just pointing out that exploration actually needs the most care out of the 3 pillars. Social and combat easily give you things that react back and have a well-defined beginning and end, but exploration is a bit more nebulous. A good exploration encounter really should react...

D&D 4E A thought on WotC's imperative to continue to digitally support 4e.

But you'd make a better customer for them if they get you to buy new product AND stay subscribed. They can't get you to buy new product by competing with themselves. The 4E support has to stop sometime. You can't reasonably expect it to be supported for 50 years, right? The question is simply when.

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Not as much as you might think for us Pathfinders. About a month before they announced 5E, I started mulling over making my own hybrid game. I love Pathfinder but I do like dynamic combats and monster-as-different approach of 4E, not to mention that I would go ahead and fix the upper level...

Exploration: My concerns for the new edition

If we're going to keep along with the 3 pillars, which I personally don't care for, then exploration is the toughest to make actually fun. Finding a locked chest is in the exploration pillar, but by itself it represents only tedium. It is a given fact that the group will find some way to open...

Would you get behind Race levels?

Where is this from? I hadn't heard anything about how themes were actually implemented other than chosen at 1st level and chosen independently of your other choices.

3rd Party Support: Is an OGL even necessary?

This is a good point. Can you afford to be even right, legally, if legally contested? Just because you did nothing wrong doesn't mean it won't bankrupt you. You'd be surprised what could be argued as copywritten, plus that fact that you don't actually need to apply for copyrights. If you produce...

Excited About Race / Class / Theme

I can really picture Assassin as pretty much how the Rogue was in combat, with the skill-monkey portion ported off to a Rogue theme. That, of course, means you could be an Assassin Noble or a Wizard Rogue, both of which sound pretty damn interesting to play.

    D&D 5E (2014) My first look at D&D Next

I'm going to ask the same question I asked in the other thread. Without giving details, would you say looking at the character sheet that you had a good idea of what came from race, class or theme?

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Back to interrogating the playtesters. Now, without asking specifics, did you get a good feel from your character sheet what on it was from race, class or theme?

"Much of Older D&D Material To Be Re-Released?"

The answer is a solid "I dunno." That's as good as no answer at all. I also suspect that this falls under the heading "not my department." Re-releasing is a slippery slope. From the business perspective, is it a quick way to generate sales or a quick way to shoot the new edition in the foot (or...
