    People have the strangest deal-breakers

Is 5E going to be a complete, well-thought out game? Almost definitely. Certainly a good choice for brand-new players. But for those of us with plenty of old edition books and only so much money... not sure yet. I am not making a decision until the book is in my hands, but it sounds like they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Three Wishes for 5E

    1. A new edition of D&D. This is the #1 absolutely top deal-breaker for me. If the 5E is an earlier edition dusted off and polished up, no thanks. That would be great for free or cheap, but not worth another several hundred bucks. 2. Everyone should be equivalent in combat and out of combat...

You cut to the very core of the problem! They are thinking in a very limited fashion as to what the resource reset cycle is.

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

The funniest thing is I've been going into this whole thing incredibly open-minded. I only had one deal-breaker... and it looks like they've broken the deal. I want 5E to be a NEW D&D, not an old D&D with a little makeup and powder. Unless they are playing their cards close to the vest, we're...

    Powers dropping out...

Yes, but the better comparisons are either larger or smaller, over the course of an adventure or the course of a single encounter. Those are much more stable than the course of a play session.

    Relevant Orcs

When it comes to 3E, I wouldn't use orcs against 1st level players. They had x3 crit axes and it isn't fun to go from full hit points to dead in your first combat. Orcs were level 2+.

    Powers dropping out...

Note that they weren't talking about spells specifically. This concept applies to the fighter as well. As for my reaction, meh. They seem to be doing an awful lot of math that hangs from one fallacy, the AVERAGE amount of anything. My D&D sessions are about 3 hours long and have 1 combat...

    Tweet gleanings

Unless they're playing their cards close to the vest, much of this seems pretty clunky. I was hoping on a 2-class system, not a system where I have choose between being good at fighting and being good outside of fighting. That works for the 50% games, but makes some characters very suboptimal as...

    Relevant Orcs

I'm now having this vision of the entire adventure from level 1-20 being one fight with one orc.

    Relevant Orcs

This is very interesting. I approve of keeping players scared longer. I just wonder how they are going to design this so the group can eventually have that shot at an ancient red. Also, the fighter per example doesn't gain much more BAB, he gains more options. At what level does the sheer...

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

I don't run adventures as one-and-out. In fact, a few years ago I had a group that investigated a murder and later had to pilot a ship! I actually wished I'd had non-combat roles in the game. The investigator could've taken the lead in the one, and the pirate could've taken the lead in the other.

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

That 2-class model was me. This is it. I can't think of anyone who doesn't want to contribute in combat. I've seen some people who don't want to participate in non-combat meaningfully and some can be coaxed into the light but some can't. I think the idea is give everyone an equivalent (not...

D&D Playtet News for Week of January 16 Up!

That's funny. Monte on facebook linked to the article about holy and radiant, but according to WotC it's not out yet.

    Conditions and the Solo Monster

How about instead of assigning hit points to different areas, you have to "kill" the creature more than once. "You are too strong. To defeat you, I must show you my TRUE form!"

    New Thought on Powers

LOL. I think it's funny when people assume that 5E will even have the 4E powers. Don't get me wrong, I think it's more probably than not, I just don't assume it. I have my idea I want to see that's a solution for this. It's kinda long. Want me to post it?

There are going to be a lot of people disappointed.

From the standpoint of WotC, customers being disappointed in 5E is fine as long as they buy it and play it. It's like a superhero movie. How bad does it have to suck for you not to see it anyways?

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

That sounds quite a lot like a line from Dark Dungeons, the Jack Chick tract. *shudder*

D&D 5E (2014) Could the new D&D miniature game be the tactical miniatures module to D&D Next?

This was the first I heard of a new minis game. I wonder why, considering how the last one fared? This looks pretty much the same, as well. The activate 2 at a time and damage coming in 5 point packets is a holdover from the last minis game. I don't think that represents mechanics we'll see in...
