    Your own personal gaming terms...

Foss: To screw up royally. In a Vampire game I ran, one of my players had country-bumpkin Gangrel named Grant Foss. Foss managed to screw up everything he tried in the first six sessions we had, and even once he got better, he became the joking scapegoat of everything that happened afterwards...

What do you do with the character sheets after a session?

I keep them; each PC has a folder they keep track of handouts and their own notes in, and since we always game at my house, it's easier just to take the folders, sit them on the bookshelf, and there we go. It helps me, too, when designing encounters and enemies; I can double-check their attack...

What is the “home base” for your party?

Chose "Other." In Final Fantasy Omega (because we had to name it something): My players currently operate out of the island once called Verraten and now called Madain Sari, a haven for summoners and the home of the newly-reborn Tonberry Nation. Since they decided to solidify Madain Sari as...

Evil & Good PCs working together

I played the evil member of a largely good party a few years back. In a group with a cleric/rogue of the nature god, bookish wizard of the holiest of the holy gods, paladin of the same holier-than-thou god, and a bard of the annoying god, I played a sorceror from the Blood War trapped in this...

Do you regret the fact that you don't get to game as much as you would like?

I run a Wednesday game and a Sunday game, and I'm already running along the border of burnout. If I played in another game per week, or ran another game per week (perish the thought), I'd definitely burn out on gaming and need to break from it for a while. Even now, running and planning two...

DM as Facilitator or as Adversary?

I said "Facilitator." I'm rooting for them! They trust that enough to come to me with their ideas and say, "Does this complex plan have a chance of success?" and if it's too far-fetched or out there, I'll say, "No." They know as much as I do that if they flub the rolls or if the villains start...

    A damsel in distress!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. This got the biggest laugh out of me.

World of Warcraft killed our gaming group!

I really think anything has this potential. Video games, dates, girlfriends, wives, kids, work, sports, television shows... WoW is more prevalent because it's hugely popular, and because it's close to tabletop gaming in conception (and with the World of Warcraft RPG, which I recommend), they're...

Why all players but no DMs?

I have been running a weekly game for going on three years. When it's over, which may be in the next six months, I plan on taking a month-long break and then running again. I have not been a player in a game that lasted more than three sessions in four and a half years. And I like it that way. I...

Boxed Text or No Boxed Text?

While I don't run adventures, I do read them when they come in my books. I like the boxed text -- I think it can really help a DM set the mood, even if he/she just pulls from it for their own descriptions. Same way reading a book helps with ideas. There might be a certain turn of phrase that...

    [July] What are you playing

I am playing: Madden 2006 (as always) Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne Galactic Civilizations II (or at least I will starting tonight) Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion Heroes of Might And Magic V Civilization IV Lots of strategy in there, you may...

How do you feel about DM PCs?

I run two games of two players, in my Final Fantasy game. Each game has a DMPC (I suppose that's what he is); one has a dual-wielding swordsman named Aidan Denun, and the other has an athletic dragoon named Champ Justice. Aidan rounds out the swordsman/mage group as a hybrid character, able to...

Player schticks that grind your gears

My choices: Captain Complication: Sometimes the quickest route between Point A and Point B is a straight line. I'm more than okay with creativity. I love it. Do things to keep me guessing. But when someone steals your ship, sometimes the quickest way to get it back is to go back and take it...

    Did You Marry a Gamer?

I moved here in the summer of 2003, and live in Overland Park now. Just went to 31st Century Games in Olathe yesterday for the World of Warcraft RPG Alliance Player's Guide, actually. Best gaming store I've been to yet.

Changing critical hits and sneak attacks so everything can feel the pain

I can't recall how accurate this is, but don't undead have no Constitution score, and therefore no additional HP/level possible? If they get critically hit, it might shorten their lifespan (such as it is) even more. I don't know if that's part of the balance or not, but if you're making it so...

    Did You Marry a Gamer?

Didn't vote because we're not married -- together for over five years, but not yet married. I got her into gaming, and she's as passionate about it as I am. She also puts up with my twenty-minute drives to Olathe to hit the best gaming store without complaint, and even owns more dice than I do...

Favorite Dump Stat for Purely Roleplaying Reasons

Dexterity, actually. My heroes tend to have trouble slipping or tripping when attacking, and anytime my dwarven paladin mucked up a charge or missed a swing, it was because his footwork was off or he got off balance when swinging his hammer.

    An idea for promoting roleplaying

It could work, I think, with the right people. I would not be one of them. "NATURAL 20! I'M NOT GONNA DIE! WAHOOOO!"

What do Enworlders do in real life?

I work as a customer service manager/accounting specialist/programmer/troubleshooter/repair/website optimizer/jack of all trades for a voicemail/auto attendant company in Kansas City. Been here two and a half years. At least, that's what pays my bills. Congrats on the awesome job, Piratecat! I...
