Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

I'm not trying to complain or anything I am trying, unsuccessfully, to put into words an idea that over the years there has been a kind of disconnect between what people want from the game of dungeons and dragons and what we've been given to play around with. This disconnect over the years has...

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

OK, wow this intro is probably harder to write than the actual article. Anyway here goes... First off this is not a troll. I have probably had far too much time on my hands to mull this over but for the past few weeks I have been pondering DnD, specifically what makes Dungeons and Dragons...

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

That is a perfectly valid fear. I'm just worried about the logistics of such a film or series. Unlike Game of Thrones The Wheel of Time has a lot of magic going which could get hokey fast, plus having to find a derth of actors over 6 and a half feet might be tough too.

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

I would love to see the Wheel of Time. I actually think it might work as an animation, but I will be more than pleased if I just get to finish reading the thing. It shouldn't be too bad I actually think they can pull a reverse Hobbit and condense several of the books (ei: anything that happens...

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

Sure they mention weapons IIRC when they go up against the goblins they are said to only have tool types, knives, hachets and what not (except for Thorin and Bilbo) and in Mirkwood it also mentions that they have bows for hunting.

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

I must have missed the part where they said something along those lines. Thorin is definately a badass, there is another dwarf who is pretty awesome too (can't remember his name right now, the one who does the majority of the scouting) They were good. The majority of the dwarves though seemed to...

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

Oh I am kidding, mostly. This is supposed to be tongue and cheek. ;) Man in the Funny Hat I realize that books require adaptation, as do plays, I was mostly irked how the dwarves were suddenly turned from a group of what are just tradesmen/artists and how they are now shown as capable, well...

What if other adaptations got the "hobbit" treatment?

Ok let me preface this by saying I actually want to see The Hobbit, I'm not sure how they managed to get 3 movies out of the decidedly slim book, but that's not why we are here. I want to talk about the dwarves. Specificly the part wherein they have become a troupe of wandering badasses, instead...

Transcending the mundane. How to make martial classes epic.

Yeah. Not sure I can articulate my thoughts on this. Maybe the problem is that over the years design issues have just sort of piled up without any meaningful attempt to fix them. I have my own d20 that I play that fixes the issues I have with the game but such things only go so far as to help...

Transcending the mundane. How to make martial classes epic.

Perhaps there is a problem with what people think of when the word epic comes up. On further reflection I think there are two main types of epic that appear in regards to gaming. The first is epic as it relates to the scope scope of the adventure or campaign and the second is epic as it relates...

Transcending the mundane. How to make martial classes epic.

Indeed. I generally have considered the "magic" of mundanes to be external (items, armors, potions etc.) as opposed to the internal magic of casters. Pre 3e fighters got all the best magic items becuase of hard caps written into the game. Usually in the form of "Usuable by Fighters only!" With...

Transcending the mundane. How to make martial classes epic.

Seems like I stired up some thoughts with this topic. But I will try to discuss some of the things that have been brought up and go from there. I noticed a few times verisimilitude and believability were brought up as reasons why martial classes can't do cool stuff. I tend to agree with...

Transcending the mundane. How to make martial classes epic.

Recently I've been lurking about the internet and reading, once again, about how the mundane classes don't stack up against the mystic ones as DnD approaches level 20. Usually when I start thinking about this I try to think of ways to change the game to bring casters in line with the mundane...

Something that has to be modeled in this game and currently is not

I generally like to use a modified massive damage threshold. In 3.x a character needs to take 50 damage from a single attack then make a fort save DC 15 or be knocked to 0 hp. Unfortunately I think 50 is really high at low levels (honestly a level 1-5 character is pretty much dead anyway if they...

    But Is It Art?

Sure it's art. Just like any well crafted tool can be ttrpgs can be beautiful in and of themselves and they can be used to make things of beauty. But just like a well made car, knife or a superbly designed kitchen the people using it are (aka the artists) are far more important than the medium...

How do you role getting new spells?

I'll agree with most of the other replies and say handwaving is probably best. Because if you aren't asking why the fighter suddenly learned that neat trick then it probably doesn't matter how the mage learned their spell.

    interesting question

Yeah if it has a damage type. I'd say it would leave wounds consistent with that type of damage.

Aspects of D&D that have made you fed up?

The page count is one of my biggest peeves. I barely use a quarter of whats in the books yet to play the game, as a DM at least, I need to drag around nearly 1000 pages of material spread over 3 books. :S This also ties into my second peeve which is numbers bloat, or the fact that as levels...
