    Never Made Sense

When I sit and think about it. I always wonder how humans manage to survive. I mean their are plenty of races that beat them out in terms of reproductive capabilities (goblins, kobolds etc.) who are their equal in intelect and can survive where humans can't. That right there should spell doom...

    Homosexuality in your games

Sexuality is not something that comes up in the games i've run or played in. The closest thing that comes up is occasionally a player will try to have their character find a brothel and when I DM that stuff quickly gets passed over. Though once I did have a player, a guy, want to play a female...

    d20 Free form magic system

So I had a chance to test out the system last week. It worked, but my friend who was playing the cleric cast only 3 different spells over the course of the session. There were other freeform elements in the system we tried that the players really liked. They enjoyed the fact that they could...

    d20 Free form magic system

Dandu Thats the plan. We will see how it goes. Alzrius Thanks for the link I'll check it out. The main plan is to try to drop as much from the game as possible and still play something resembling DnD. More ideas and approaches are always welcome.

    d20 Free form magic system

So in the coming weeks I'm going to be running a one shot mini campaign. I won't have my books or reliable access to the net so I am throwing together a rules light d20 game. As part of the game I want magic but don't really feel like writing down or modifying pages of spells. Today I was...

    But is it Art?

Ok sorry about the delay but let's get back into it. So, if art is a dialogue between artist and viewer whereby the artist presents a particular world view, consciously or not, then I would like to propose that the original Dungeons and Dragons by Gygax and Arneson is art. Firstly DnD was...

    But is it Art?

Sure games can be art. But allow me to throw out an idea about art in general first. I am sure someone said this before and probably better but hear me out. OK art is dialogue between the creator and the viewer in which the creator states a certain world view, consciously or not. The thing...

    Lets define Today's Fighter

I'm with you all the way here. I think the fighter just really needed some love in terms of feats, or feats just needed to be better in general. 4e fighters were good, in terms of options. Only as long as you want to do what the designers said a fighter should be.

I'm Sick Of...(D&D tropes that you can do without)

Thats what I mean. Where do the deers live? Can farmers go out and plant crops without an armed escort? Either that or farmers are supplanted by factories of low level clerics spamming create food/water. In which case what mud spattered peasent will scream about 'violence enherent in the system?

I'm Sick Of...(D&D tropes that you can do without)

Lack of Ecology: This one usually gets filled under "things better not thought about" but it chafes me everytime I open a setting manual. This is one where every forest, cave, mountain, sewer or any other place not being currently occupied by goodly races has a host of monsters just sitting...

    Lets define Today's Fighter

Agreed. I am all for fighters, and all classes, to have suites that help them achieve their role and to fit players visions. I wonder if it might not be advisable for designers to turn back the clock a bit and draw harder lines between the classes again. If we know what it is a fighter needs...

    Lets define Today's Fighter

I dunno I think a fighter can take up different roles but it requires feats or abilities that back it up. I feel that unfortunately they've gone away from making this happen by 1. Making too many classes. and 2. Having to ensure 20 level progressions. We already touched on excessive classes...

    Lets define Today's Fighter

This has been bugging me for several days now. I've been thinking about the fighter and what it is that makes them unique. It seems that traditionally, so in 1e and what not, Fighters were the best at fighting. If monsters showed up it was their job to make them go away. To this end they got...

    [July] What are you reading?

Part of the way through 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence' which is a somewhat dense book in terms of subject matter. Not sure I like it but it is interesting.

    What is "gamist"?

Gamist for me, and several others in this thread, is a style of gaming or design that strives for making a well structured and balanced game. Often this means that what "makes sense" or is "realistic" takes a back seat to making sure things don't get too out of hand. In earlier editions of DnD...

Playing Diablo III - No time to post.

Wow I just beat the game on normal last night. (slow I know but I've been fiddling around with lots of characters) I must say that D3 is a fun game, aside from nor playing the first day or so, and its also a pretty game. Unfortunately this does not feel like a game that should have taken 10...

The Ranger: What is his shtick?

I've always felt that the ranger tended to perform poorly as a main warrior. At least for 3e/4e they lacked the ac/hp to make effective front line combatants. To me their schtick was being the woodland rogue. Sure they may have some odd powers, like their magic. But mostly they seem to be...

Lego + war games = awesome!

yeah the loss of a lego set is a terrible thing. I think mine went in a pre-move garage sale years ago. Looking at the price of lego I think whoever bought it got a steal. This game however really makes me want to build little anime robots out of lego. Over the years I've seen some pretty nifty...

Lego + war games = awesome!

I couldn't find any threads on this but thought it might be up some peoples alleys around here. Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack by Joshua A.C. Newman — Kickstarter I know most people might be getting kickstarted out. But seriously. This made me want to rush out and get lego more than any...

    Other forms of treasure

My players tend towards being pack rats. Regardless of my intent they will grab anything that looks even remotely valuable to sell later. No need to get them started on the path to a stronghold either. As soon as the first dungeon is cleared they talk about shoring up the walls, clearing out the...
