Making a homebrew system; need help w/ optimizing and balancing system itself (percentile)

After seeing this I'm not really sure I understand your issue. If by 5th level a character is supposed to be the equal of Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman to ever live, why is having a score of 100 an issue?

Making a homebrew system; need help w/ optimizing and balancing system itself (percentile)

Something that is a bit old fashioned but might take care of most of your points is to have numbers remain relatively static or advanced at a fixed rate, say only +5 to any single skill per level or some such. Then have hit points be the determining factor between characters of varying levels. A...

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

HERE is the newly edited version of Realms of Adventure. I added the ranges/areas for weapons and spells and edited the spells to reflect this. I also added a reaction table for monsters and a small area dealing with followers and companions. I also tried to edit out any mistakes I could find.

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

I've been thinking about it at work and I am going to define a few terms, ranges and areas of effect, mostly for spells. Ranges Melee - Toe to toe Close - Across the room Medium - Across the street Long - Down the block If a target is outside your range -2 to hit or -4 if its really far...

Armor Class vs. Damage Reduction - Your preference

I like armor as AC, at least right now ;). At least as far as dnd is concerned there will always be a to hit roll if you only modify AC that really keeps things simple as you only need to track one number. DR is another system added on top of this its not too bad at the start but start adding...

    Top 8 Monsters and Spells!

Well as iconic as petrification is I don't feel the cockatrice is particularly iconic, medusa is but we could make an entire thing about iconic mythological monsters. Instead of basilisk and mindflayer then I'd add the following which are more generic. Beast men - really any human/animal...

    Top 8 Monsters and Spells!

I didn't know if you just wanted 8 or 8 PER level. 8 per level seemed like a lot so I just went with 8. Dnd themed. For iconic monsters. (monsters I drawn to more often than not) Lvl 1 - Goblin, Skeleton Lvl 3 - Ogre, Dire Wolf Lvl 4 - Gargoyle Lvl 5 - Basilisk Lvl 8 - Mind Flayer Lvl Awesome...

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

Yeah its 1/3 per spell level and the damage doesn't heal as normal. The dice thing is actually more complicated to write down than it is to play. Success is usual on a 5 or 6 for something a character is just randomly trying and as written can get up 2-6 for very specific tasks. Its actually...

Is Dark Sun an alternate future Forgotten Realms?

Growing up I always thought so but I vaguely remember reading something or being told that no they weren't. Though don't quote me on my ramblings or musings.

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

Need to add my TWF rules. Carrying a weapon in the off hand +1 damage for a light weapon, +2 damage for one-handed weapons. If the weapon is magical add its modifier to damage as well. +1 damage on critical hits. Also let me know what you think of my Barbarian class. Barbarians are wild...

Modos Rulebook: the real-time editing thread

wow that's quite a bit of text. It'll take some time to go through it. If you are having issues with word to internet might I suggest uploading your work onto google drive you may then export it as a PDF file and then host it on mediafire so we can all view a nice pdf.

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to see Next do away with racial stat mods for PC races.

Personally I'll suggest going the crazy route and suggest numbered stats be removed entirely. We are already forced to strive for the highest ability modifier possible. On top of that to keep math flat were capped at 20. Why not just have a polar on/off for each stat, maybe with bonuses or...

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

So the basics of RoA are attack rolls use d20 to hit a target number of 20 you add relevent modifiers to the roll plus the AC of thing being attacked. So the game uses desceding AC which might throw some people off. Every other roll thats needed is done a d6 with a 5+ being a success. Thats it...

Realms of Adventure: A rules light d20 game

Made my own game based on Searchers of the Unknown. It clocks in at a whopping 4 pages. Its free and would love to know what people think. Their are probably mistakes and some things are left undefined on purpose. Enjoy! Realms of Adventure! EDIT: New link, newest version.

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

If they did WotC would probably have most of the market on lock down but we'd have who knows how many editions of "DnD". I could just see it now a whole shelf of core dnd books "Classic", "lite", "gritty", "tactics", "MAX", "X-TREME!!!!!!"...

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

Thanks for the implication :D contrary to the evidence I am capable of simple math ;) but the target 20 method just clicked for me in a way that thaco never did. I can do thaco but I need to think about, with target 20 it just happens.

D&D 5E (2014) What rules would you like to see come back in 5E?

I dunno I find that with a little mod it works just fine. Just make sure that all spells resolve at the end of each combat round, if they don't get interrupted that is.

OSR What Has Caused the OSR Revival?

I've always had the same problem too until I recently found out about the target 20 variant. (to hit bonus + AC 20+ hits) Still uses descending AC, still thAC0, so much easier to get.
