Portraying fantasy societies realistically instead of on the evil/good axis

Ha! Probably true but I don't have the time to verify your statement. ;) The main book in question is Sex and War: How biology explains warfare and terroism and offers a path to a safer world. A bit of mouthful as far as titles go but it was a fascinating read if a tad dense.

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

Not really, WoTC is beholden to certain expectations. Not only the expectations of the greater pop culture but also the expectations in place due to the traditions of previous editions, "gnome" or any other word carries with it certain baggage. WoTC or anyone can change these expectations, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

But in dnd the rules explicitly state that gnomes are smaller and weaker than humans. Sure you can make up a race that is small and still has the the strength and capabilities of larger creatures but that's house ruling.

Portraying fantasy societies realistically instead of on the evil/good axis

Fair point. Having only read a few books on the subject, not that recently either, it's not a topic I am overly familiar with.

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

Its a tough question, in 3e, I'd say use a light crossbow as I'm fairly certain even small races can use that. Or if you consider dwarves as small use them as they have no sized based weapon restrictions and are just generally awesome. Halfling with throwing weapons and rapid shot/two weapon...

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

n00bdragon Even traditionally Dnd has accommodated such gonzo, over the top play styles. Which have been the high levels, I'd say 15 and up into the epics. I have even argued in the past that many class get hosed and can't viably hold their own at those levels. Dnd has not however given us...

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

And that is totally cool. Its just not for me. I like the rules to at least have some bearing on what I can and can't do and I like the rules to follow a pattern which I can extrapolate from. Forex: weapons small/med/large -> damage 1d6/1d8/1d10. Nice simple progression and if I want to make...

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

@SatanasOZ I hear ya. I wouldn't want to derail this further. I really want balance between my races as much as my classes. I just don't feel that small races should be on the same level when it comes to combat, at least out of the gate. A couple of feats or equivalent powers should allow them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

True there is magic in dnd. Unfortunately the base assumptions are that outside of magical happenings the world works a lot like ours. Though by this logic my human warrior should have no issue hauling around a sword the size table because hey why not.

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

frankthedm agreed but if there was such a size disparity that testicle speed bagging was acceptable the larger opponent could probably kick the smaller one over or toss them with impunity.

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

I personally don't think small races should get any advantage, at least in terms of physical combat. Being small is not advantageous in real life and barring magic probably isn't good in game either. Weight classes in combative sports exist for reason and that is not to protect heavy weights...

Portraying fantasy societies realistically instead of on the evil/good axis

WayneLigon i'd say that taken to a logical end any society in dnd would quickly learn that given the amount of training needed to produce either a fighter or wizard is roughly equal yet what you get out that training is not. Would soon lead to races abandoning non casters in favour of casters...

Portraying fantasy societies realistically instead of on the evil/good axis

I've got two answers for this, one wher I'll try to help the OP and one in where I'll refute the OP. 1. If you're going to take a stab at realism for your societies my first bit of advice would be to bust out a knife and trim the heck out of setient races. There is no need to have goblins and...

Weapon speed for a d20 remix

The Conan d20 game has a mechanic IIRC where each weapon has 2 values one which is received during the first round of combat and the second is granted during subsequent rounds. Forex: Spear +4/-2, Dagger +2/-4 Might be tough to do for each individual weapon but weapons of different sizes...

Space ships from various franchises drawn together to compare size

Morrus Oh I know! it just seems kind of ridiculous is all. I was thinking back to Red Dwarf and how the managed to spawn an entire race in the depths of the ship and how it takes the characters weeks to get around on foot and then consider that it is only in the middle of the bunch.

Who lives on these ships? More importantly who makes them?

    D&D 5E (2014) Class Groups and Weaponry

I'm with Dannyalcatraz on this. These groups leave out more than a few interesting choices. What about the back alley thug with a club? Personally I'd like to see a Indian or Japanese flavoured monk that favours the bow.

Not dead yet: Options for death and dying?

I too am treating HP as abstractions, which is part of why I'm looking for something like this. What you have is close but I was hoping for something a little more severe. making a choice between death and a -1 penalty isn't much of a choice, however death or losing a hand, or bartering with a...

Not dead yet: Options for death and dying?

I'm looking for any leads on optional death and dying rules for d20 (3.x stuff). I don't really like the tracking negative HP or times knocked down or what have you. I was envisioning something where you could choose consequences instead of death, maybe keep it old school and roll on a chart...

If playing Dungeons and Dragons has taught me anything...

As a DM I first learned a harsh life lesson which I am only now beginning to grasp. My hard work and a creativity usually amount to a hill of beans and most things I do will always go unappreciated by others.
