Does this fairly eliminate Attacks of Opportunity?

To me this is a perception issue. Its not that the PC is standing around and then dodges 10 lightning bolts in a row and then runs up to and attacks one of the mages. Its all supposed to be happening similtaneously, so the PC is running up to attack someone WHILE dodging. My biggest peeve would...

Does this fairly eliminate Attacks of Opportunity?

It could work. The problem I see with all actions using the same resource is that, as a player at least, it would favor novaing to keep your opponent on the defensive. I would try everything to make sure I went first when combat started and then just pile on attacks and damage forcing the enemy...

What is the downside to simple systems?

For some people things like this can strain believability. How do your differentiate hardiness, physical power and quickness (or any other similar yet different attributes) when they are all governed by a single stat?

What is the downside to simple systems?

This actually promotes my idea that simple rpgs need to specificity if they are to remain simple. You can have a game that covers anyone of those scenarios/themes you stated, but it can usually only do one of them. Basic DnD is a good example of this, Its not too big and only has enough rules to...

What is the downside to simple systems?

For the two things you mentioned, the armored mage and the mounted knight, I think that those ideas are absent by choice not because of some failing in the system. Mages by default are not generally seen as armored types and in fact lack of access to arms and armor is a key balance point in...

What is the downside to simple systems?

Me too. Between multiclassing and enough feats anyway. I think you can get almost any flavour of PC, for a fantasy campaign at least.

What is the downside to simple systems?

For me one of the biggest drawbacks of a simple system is the need to be specific. I think its hard to make a system where you can play fantasy, scify or horror and be simple. Earlier a 4 class system was used as an example, if under such a system one wanted to play a ninja how would that be...

    Making the Cut: Non-core classes

That sounds awesome. I'd get behind that concept for sure.

Who here has created their own RPG?

Thanks for the offer! I am letting the SRD do most of the heavy lifting on this one though. I've rewritten classes into a few generic classes and put all class features into a feat system. For equipment its only a matter of hitting the delete key on things I don't want.

    Dealing with Unnecessary Classes

For 4e what I mean is that the system itself is codified and rigid. Look at sorcerers and wizards from 3e pretty much the same class but achieved different ways. With 4e AEDU power schedule you couldn't do that. Making a whole new class in 3e was pretty easy. Think of a schtick, pick an...

Who here has created their own RPG?

I've tried more than a few times to put together my own thing. (Trying again right now actually.) My biggest hurdle comes from finishing anything. Usually I'll get inspired to write up a part of a game, like a magic system or nifty class mechanics and then once I've written the part that I got...

    Making the Cut: Non-core classes

KaiiLurker Totally agree with you that was a great post. Under the rules for any edition merely having 4 classes couldn't cut it simply because of how the rules are set up. (It's why I house rule compulsively.) To use your motorcycle/4x4 analogy, I'd like to see the classes act as a chassis...

    101 Pregen PCs (or NPCs)

#38 Ra'an Do'ezeren (The Amazing Rando) Drow rogue 1/ ranger 1/ wizard 7 or any mid to high level fast fighter/mage. This dusky skinned elf has a mop of wild white hair and eyes like ice. He is garishly dressed in all manner of silks and other expensive clothes a large hooded cloak envelopes...

    Making the Cut: Non-core classes

I guess I'm just coming at it from a different perspective. I honestly don't feel that rangers, barbarians, sorcerers et al are different enough to be their own class. Yes they are core in the very literal sense that they are in the core rule books for most editions. I still think that they are...

    Making the Cut: Non-core classes

In DnD the Core Four ( fighter, rogue/thief, cleric, mage) probably aren't going anywhere anytime soon. It is highly debatable if these 4 are the best classes to represent fantasy archetypes but we are not here to talk about these I would like to talk about what it takes to be included AFTER the...

The Modos RPG Ode to Daggers

In game terms spears would have a reach advantage. With the spartans being stacked together they could potentially attack a single target 6 times (if they are all in 5 foot spaces 3 in the front 3 in the back and each get one attack.) Also if they have some kind of training/feat that grants them...

    Dealing with Unnecessary Classes

If this is just for you and your group go for it. 4e makes this kind of thing super difficult. I find its the toughest edition to house rule, especially when it comes to classes. Even with your friends you run the risk of creating overpowered combos once you get a few levels in. On a side note...

    Stickier melee combat rules

For my house rules I've done a lot of nerfing to spells and magic. I won't get into detials but suffice it to say that magic users need protecting again. To that end I've been trying to think of a way to make melee combat stickier. I've ditched Attacks of opportunity as written, though they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill idea 3,142

Instead of whenever the DM thinks its appropriate what about having Primary stats again? Where fighters get advantage using skills that are primary like say Str and Con or Rogues with dex and int. Etc. with backgrounds maybe adding more or an additional advantage in related skills? This is a...

    why touch attacks?

Not sure how touch AC fireballs would work. Its not like you direct the energies of the blast to target specific targets. Targets just happen to be in the area when the spell takes effect. weapons get attack rolls because they need to aimed, fireballs and most spells just are.
