Fighters vs Wizards - A New (?) Look at Balance...

I don't agree that gameplay has changed to permit slow, methodical dungeon exploration. If anything the increase in PC power/survivability over the editions means that players can be more reckless these days than ever before. Despite older style play sometimes being seen as all about kicking in...

D&D 5E (2014) Removing feats as a universal class mechanic

First off gonna say that I love feats. Probably my favorite mechanic that was added in 3e. That being said I agree with Ratskinner. With the class proliferation that has happened over the last few editions there seems to be a "base class" for every occasion. Feats are becoming redundant because...

Does the Cleric of the Sun god Resist Cold or Fire?

My gut reaction says resist cold makes the most sense, but I don't see why at higher levels or as a feat or something that they can't also gain resist fire. And hey if your still torn why not give them both.

d20 "Boons and Favours" A Uniqueness mechanic

I want characters to be different. I think other people want charaters to be different too. What I don't want is to have to sift through stacks of rules to find things that make a character unique. (Don't get me wrong I love reading rules but I think it slows things down to lug two back packs...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

I adore this kind of mechanic. I introduced something similar to my players recently and they really liked it. It allowed them to really personalize their character. Nothing quite like a simple yet deep and flexible rule. I want more things like this and less stat block corner case feats and such.

ENWorld Character art request thread 2013!

New year new thread! I figured after topping 100 pages on the last one maybe some people want some free art again. Rules are: 1. One request per person. 2. Keep your description to things that are applicable to your character. 3. Have some patience. Any other artists that care to help are...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

Something like the martial dice or whatever they are called for ddn seems fitting. (if they aren't able to be used that way already) being able to "burn" dice for damage or to hit bonus and keep the fighter simple or burning dice, and maybe investing in a feat or something and being able to add...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

Manbearcat and pemerton Thanks guys! I really like what 4e added in terms of capability for non casting classes. I think however that this list, which I'm assuming has stat blocks attatched to all theses powers or feats, just illustrates the idea that game has gotten to complex. I want my...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

Unfortunately the intangible of a fighter, whether its their ability to lead or accomplish tasks outside of combat, has never AFAIK been given explicit rules in DnD (Maybe the thing about fighters getting land at higher levels, but I can't recall if that was optional or not.) Up until 4e it was...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

Why should hitting be two rolls? Well it certainly doesn't have to be, but I think at this point it will be very hard to get away from the "roll a d20 add modifiers check results against target number" thing that has been rather central to the game as a whole up to this point. We could probably...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

No it really doesn't stop it from being poor design. It might be better to think in terms of mechanically simple vs mechanically complex rather than "easy" or "hard". I'd actually make a case for the fighter and warlock being the mechanically simple classes while warlord and wizard would take...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

Actually I never said that I liked that kind of game at all. I have been saying that orignally dnd was a kick in the door style dungeon hack but many people, even the creators, quickly abandonded that style of game for a more story driven roleplay game. The problem being that a lot of the rules...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

sorry about that I wrote the original in word over the holidays then pasted it into the post. I am not too sure how to stop it from auto changing or whatever it is that it does.

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

I dunno by it's very nature a bolt of fire is more useful than a sword stance. A sword or a spell can do the same damage mechanically but spells just have so much extra going on. And at the end of the day a sword is still just a piece of metal.

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

I think that having certain classes teach the basics of the game to people is a good way to draw people in. As they become familiar wit the rules they will naturally want to do more and try out other things. By that point though they will probably be fans and so they will take the initiative at...

Doing Wrong Part 2: Fighters, Wizards and Balance Oh My!

In part one, we discussed how the game of DnD has changed over the editions in an effort to reflect what people wanted from the game, or at least how some people played it. For me this was merely a lead in to the real meaty question. Are the changes in DnD, specifically the search for balance...

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

I think we need to be careful when discussing "power level" when talking about classes. Which classes at which levell? Traditionally the fighter has been a stronger class out of the gates than the either the cleric or the wizard, especially if you give them a bow. Sure if you talk sheer power as...

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

Very enlightening. Thanks for adding to the conversation ;) actually part two concerns itself with the idea that the search for "balance" in the game, especially between classes, is having a detrimental effect on the hobby.

Doing it wrong Part 1: Taking the dragon out of the dungeon

That is a good place to show the "break". I had not considered 3/4e edition focus on the "character" while I put this together that adds yet another angle that one can come to. Though I think you might be able to consider that "story" oriented, at least in so far as story is something that can...
