    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

Yes, you are certainly correct. My bad there. It's been too many months since we last played 4E and my memory of the treasure parceling guidelines turned out to be fuzzier than I would have liked. I didn't say it was an identical system, but the mechanic attempts to achieve the same thing...

Indeed. I suspect he mostly wanted to retire, but it is strange that he didn't (or perhaps couldn't) sell the business as a going concern. The name alone should have been worth something.

    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

For example? Breaking everything down into powers that you can put on a power bar (or meld if we want to think in terns of card games analogy). Having magic tied more closely to level (i.e. low level people can't use magic from a higher tier). My 4E wizard's thundering power sure felt a lot...

    Goodman rebuttal

I posed a similar question to the owner of a successful FLGS (had been in business for about 30 years) at a city about five hours from here last Fall and got a similar response. 4E was doing fantastic for his store! I was curious because I was seriously considering opening a FLGS in my own...

    Goodman rebuttal

Yes, but it's also sometimes a mistake to simply throw up your hands and accept mediocre sales just because we're at that point in some theoretical cycle and not take a more detailed look as to what is really going on.

    Goodman rebuttal

The thing about applying a cyclical generation theory to the hobby, or D&D in particular, is that there doesn't seem to be any sort of thought as to what causes the cycle. With capitalist economies, there is some rational theory behind what is going on with these recessionary cycles. What Joe...

    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

I played 4E before I ever played WoW (by a few months). Before playing WoW, I thought that 4E felt like a blend of miniatures gaming mixed with video game elements and some of the old traditional D&D tropes sprinkled on top. Once I finally played WoW the connection with video games, and WoW...

Planescape modules - which are any good?

That's funny. Of all the Planescape books, I think I referred to "On Hallowed Ground" the most of any of them during the Planescape games I ran. I think it's probably because I ran a lot of adventures that involved the various powers and their realms and found "On Hallowed Ground" as a good...

    Touch Attacks

It shouldn't be all that different than in 3.5. If it's a range touch attack, you would use dex. For melee touch, you would normally use strength. I'm not sure if weapon finesse can be applied to touch spells. The Pathfinder feat says natural weapons count as light weapons so perhaps you...

Pathfinder 1E What IS Pathfinder's design goal? Forked: Pathfinder's casters.

Our group has grown quite attached to the Beta rules. I'm not sure what we'll do with the final rules where some things have been pulled back closer to 3.5. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it! In any event, I plan to buy 2 copies of the final rules for the gaming table.

Pathfinder 1E What IS Pathfinder's design goal? Forked: Pathfinder's casters.

That would be the case in our group (6 people). We've been playtesting the Alpha (and then beta) rules. I was the only person to download the rules so that would be one download for 6 playtesters.

Representing flying on the battle mat?

We use the little plastic pizza triangles that you often get with take-out pizza that help prevent the pizza box lid from coming in contact with the pizza crust. You can build stacks of them to represent different height levels, taping or gluing them together for better stability.

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

Although this is a bit of tangent from the thread, this isn't strictly true. It's definitely possible to reverse-engineer your own MMORPG server. It's already been done for WoW, for example. However, these private servers are just that - disconnected from the main server(s).

Adventure ideas for campaign based in the Antarctic

Seeing as how you mentioned CoC, I'd look towards H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness" for inspiration.

Pathfinder on the bookstore shelves? Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!

I quite like this... it could be an interesting theme for a Planescape or Ravenloft adventure - both metaphorically and literally. I suppose it could also fit in one of the darker Paizo adventure paths.

My piazo problmes Forked Thread: Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

It's interesting to hear that your Pathfinder Barbarian players really liked the rage points as well. The barbarian player in my playtest group also wasn't happy with the idea of going back to rage rounds. Still, I'm pretty sure we'll still pick up at least two hardcover copies of the final...

The OGL can't be revoked. I suspect that what you're remembering is some concerns expressed over the GSL. The GSL can be revoked so that may be what you had read.

My piazo problmes Forked Thread: Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

Sure, Paizo could have simply assumed that people will continue to use their old 3.5 books or that they will use the 3.5 SRD, but without new rule books for the game on shelves in hobby and book stores, it requires a lot more effort for someone new to come into the game. By printing a new fork...

My piazo problmes Forked Thread: Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

It's needed for the same reason that Open Source software requires active development. An orphaned or otherwise abandoned system will not be attractive to people looking to play something that will still be supported in years to come. If you were deciding between two different software...

My piazo problmes Forked Thread: Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

It's not that difficult to mix and match 3.5 and Pathfinder characters and a lot can be done on the fly. I know I do that all the time for the Pathfinder games I run and it's not too much of a chore. The main thing I adjust is hit dice type/hit points and the odd skill (spot/listen become...
