    Attacking the grappler

Last night my character got surprised by a constrictor snake while on watch and was quickly grappled and started taking constriction damage. The other characters woke up and started attacking the snake. We thought that there was a rule that if you were sharing a space with someone else, your...

Q: Improving Monster HD and Caster Level

Extrapolating from Savage Species, it looks like the caster level would increase to 35. Savage Species section on "monsters as classes" usually states that a monster's caster level for its spell-like abilites is equal to monster class levels + x. At the end of the normal progression, the...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] lamest terminology change?

I agree that the weapon size change was a bad idea. It's the one thing that has really stuck in my craw. D&D may not be strictly based on LotR, but there's definitely an influence. The famous magic item Sting was an elvish dagger that was wielded by both Bilbo and Frodo as a light weapon...

Why a prereq for Weapon Finesse?

The thing is that levels 3 and 4, the difference is the same as it would be at 1st and 2nd. Given the same example, at levels 3 and 4, the rogue will have attacks of +5 and +6, while the fighter will have attacks of +7 and +8. By taking Weapon Finesse at 3rd level, the rogue bridges a huge...

Why a prereq for Weapon Finesse?

I recently reported an erratum to Gwendoyn Kestrel pointing out that many 1 HD animals have Weapon Finesse even though they don't have the prerequisite +1 BAB to qualify for it. The response was that they knew about the issue, and were probably going to make Weapon Finesse a bonus feat for...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Errata Reporting

From the SRD, Magic Items I (Basics and Creation), Creating Magical Items section, Table: Summary of Magic Item Creation Costs: The Base Price of potions is listed as "25 x level of spell x level of caster." This should read "50 x level of spell x level of caster." The Magic Supplies Cost of...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Errata Reporting

DMG, p. 209: The text says that you use a monster character's effective character level when determining whether or not to use epic advancement. As clarified by the Sage in Dragon #310 (in a column advertised as 3.5 content), you use character level only when determining whether to use epic...

D&D 3.x [3.5e] Conjuration, Spell Resistance and Golems

Looks like they did the school of Conjuration up right in 3.5. Kudos on this one, WotC designers...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Noteworthy spell changes

I have always thought that instant transportation spells should be conjuration, or "summoning" from 2nd edition. Conjuration school is involved with transporting things through the dimensions. Dimension door, teleportation, and teleport without error make much more sense as Conjurations than...

    AC per level

The issue is that of the things that scale in D&D, AC is not one of them. Attack bonuses go up quickly in D&D, as does damage. Upper level combat between equals is very quick and very deadly. Increasing AC wouldn't slow down combat resolution, but it would slow down the rate at which PCs die...

    AC per level

I couldn't agree more, Datt. This topic has been addressed in different threads, but one simple solution I've heard is to give a dodge bonus equal to one-half a character's base attack bonus. Check out Stars Wars and Wheel of Time d20 games for examples of combat systems that use class...

Changes in MM creatures - why?

From Quasqueton: I agree with Quasqueton. Although I don't have a lot of problem with the changes themselves, I have a problem with the fact that they were made in 3.5. 3.5 should have been a revision - cleaning up stuff and fixing a few generally agreed upon problem areas. It should not...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Errata Reporting

MM, animal appendix: Several 1 HD animals, including the cat, the tiny snake, and the badger, have the Weapon Finesse feat but do meet the feat's prerequisite of +1 BAB. [editorial] The Weapon Finesse feat should not have a prerequisite in order to allow 1st level rogues, bards, and animals...

    Worst named feat in 3.5

The skill is not clear to me. You've got "Treat Wound that Reduces Base Speed" saying simply "A successful Heal check removes this movement penalty." Okay, you can use it on yourself. The way Treat Poison and Treat Disease are worded seems to imply that there are two characters involved in...

    Worst named feat in 3.5

I browsed 3.5 at Barnes & Noble last night and was surprised to see the the feat "Self-Sufficient" gives a +2 bonus to Heal checks, along with +2 to Survival. AFAIK you cannot use Heal on yourself, meaning that this bonus does not, in fact, make you more self-sufficient.

[Epic D&D] Forgiveness is Divine (Full Again)

Sorry for the PDOT (Public Display of Off-Topic conversation) :o About Epic weapon feats. From the ELH FAQ: Q: The feats Epic Weapon Focus and Epic Weapon Specialization grant a +2 bonus on attack and +4 bonus on damage respectively. Do these numbers stack with regular weapon focus and...
