    Helping a player

As has already been mentioned, the monk needs higher stats than other characters in order to function. The 3E monk is one of the multi-stat holdovers from 1st and 2nd editions that you only used to be able to play if you rolled really high stats. You know, like the paladin whose minimum...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

I wasn't talking about the level of Fighter, I was talking about the even-numbered levels of Spellsword from Complete Warrior. According to the wording of the feat, these levels would serve to increase the familiar's abilities, since "levels from classes that grant arcane spellcasting stack"...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

I think my real question is whether the levels of spellsword (or rage mage, bladesinger, etc.) that do NOT offer increases in caster level DO increase the power of the familiar when such a character takes the Obtain Familiar feat. These classes only improve the spellcasting every other level...

    Obtain Familiar and warrior/mage PrC's

One of my players is playing a spellsword, Wizard6/Fighter1/Spellsword3. When he gets to 12th level (Wiz6/Ftr1/Spl5) he wants to take Obtain Familiar to improve his current familiar. According to my reading of the feat, his familiar will gain the abilities of the familiar of an 11th level...

    Foreign languages for DMing

I will sometimes use bits of languages I know for color, such as to mimic the sound of an unfamiliar language or for the casting of spells. It didn't work well when I played with a Spaniard and a German, but now everyone's American. One kind of gets my Spanish... The party sorcerer cast charm...

A PC died in my campaign on Saturday

I've had the same problem in my group. One of the players always plays a fighter who rushes in headlong into every encounter and has refused to retreat no matter what the odds. After two-and-a-half months of playing, he's on his third character. No other character has died so far. I don't...

    Triple HP at 1st level?

This will be a good idea if they have the gumption to refer to "apprentice" levels. Apprentice levels would receive fewer HP and skill points. The D&D convention of barely experienced characters striking out on their own doesn't make a lot of sense. Given the low level of power of most 1st...

THREE elven races, plus half-elves ... but they say gnomes have no niche?!

It's like they're going back to Classic D&D. Gnomes were random encounters in dungeons: nice beings who traded gems and then said goodbye. Later in Creature Crucibles you could play one. 4E is shaping up nicely. Hopefully the designers will realize that gnomes should be like the elves as...

    Please call female deities 'goddesses.'

Although removing feminine titles from the language is being done for a noble goal, it's not very good grammar. Other Indo-European languages have grammatical gender, so it doesn't make any sense for them to use the same word for male and female roles. If objects can be masculine or...

Why are they making demi-humans taller?

Halflings should have received -4 to Strength instead of -2. I believe all other Small creatures have an assumed -4 penalty to Strength, just as all Large creatures have a +4 to Strength. -4 Strength is much more believable considering the Halfling's purported size. However, it would have...

Looking for additional player for FR campaign in the South Bay

Hi, I'm looking for one additional player for a Forgotten Realms campaign in Torrance, CA. Right now we have two players and we're looking for a third. We meet every Monday evening in a home in Torrance. This is a higher-level campaign, with PCs starting at 10th level with a free cohort...

PCs using their abilities - a favor to the party?

Incidentally, I think a well-played non-cleric who dislikes the party cleric and/or his religion should try to refuse healing. (But who bothers to play like that?) When I play a cleric, I'm parsimonious with the healing. During battle, sure, you try to heal people who need it, but after the...

Different player types hogging the spotlight?

As others have mentioned, indiscriminately attacking folks can have steep in-game consequences. It's a little something called karma. If adventurers attack everyone they are remotely threatened by, they end up as desperados. Running a game in which the PCs are bandits can actually be...

    Anybody know the title?

It seems like a lot of DMs get very upset if you try to do something like creating a previously existing relationship with a random NPC, even when such relationship adds flavor only. The model seems to be DM: active, players: reactive. DMs become this kind of father authority or pack leader...

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

Just to start a flame war, it is not the standard in the PHB. Therefore, it is not the standard. It's an alternate or optional or house rule method. Edit: And I just say that because it distorts the discussion. If someone talks about how they fairly rolled their ranger with all the 18's and...

    Anybody know the title?

"Not too much" is right. My experience is that dull GMs and players are dull because they prefer being dull.

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

Well, as the valedictorian of my high school class said on more than one occasion: "If you're not cheating, you're not trying."

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

I myself have rolled up lots of sample characters, and many of those characters had high scores and some 18's. I think the most I've ever seen in one character was two 18's. Certainly some rolled character stats are high. But when you have one chance to roll the stats for a character that...

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

No, it's true you can get lucky. I call even one 18 very lucky. An 18 and 17, also very lucky, but very possible. But 13, 14, 15, 18, 18, 18 rolled in that order isn't lucky. It's impossible.
