    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Easy. I create the "fireballer" template, which gives the creature unlimited used of fireball as an SLA. On a monster, the creature might get to use this ability 1-3 times at most because at the end of the encounter, it's dead. Depending on the base creature, this may be worth +1 to CR because...

    Prices for scavanged body parts

You need to be careful when you consider assigning value to monster body parts. If a monster's body has value, then that affects the total amount of treasure for that encounter. In the long run, it can mean that the PCs are running around with too much wealth for their level, which may make...

    Animal miniatures?

Try Foundry's "animal best sellers" -- pack mules, pack horses, oxen, sheep, and livestock, as well as lions, bears, and gorillas.

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Felon, you'll note in the text you're quoting that we're talking about a 2nd-level human paladin and a 2nd-level (ECL) aasimar paladin. When they're both Pal2 (as they are 50% of the time in the 100 XP-deficit system), they have the same hp, BAB, skill points (barring the 5 extra points the...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

I think JD Wiker proposed something like that. I fully admit my belief that any system where {an LA+0 and an LA+1 character are in the same party and they have the same number of class levels 50% of the time} fails to penalize the LA+1 character "enough." If the level-adjusted character is...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Your deficit system still doesn't work where it's important (at low levels) because the XP table isn't linear and your deficit value is. Using the same "robot DM with 100 XP increment" example I linked to in my other post.... With a 1000 XP deficit for an LA+1 race, you can't play a 1st-level...

[FR] Do you use the Realms cosmology?

Sorry, I actually didn't realize you were talking specifically about 3E. I blame ... lack of sleep.

[FR] Do you use the Realms cosmology?

Actually, they appeared in the 1E Unearthed Arcana, a core product. Actually, Moradin's entry in the 1E DDG specifically mentions Clanggedin, Dumathoin, and Abbathor and their general portfolios (battle, etc.). Corellon's entry mentions Rillifane Rallathil, Labelas Enoreth, and Hanali Celanil...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

And I don't think that someone who chooses to play a core race should be "penalized" for doing so in a group where everyone else isn't playing a core race. Think of it this way: LAs are in whole number increments because character levels are in whole number increments. By assigning a creature a...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Which is the main reason we decided to make regular drow as a PC-playable race in the FRCS rather than making an LA +0 "surface drow" race that nobody would want to play (because they wanted to play the "real" drow). Which meant we had to invent something like LA. I don't have my 1E books...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

I agree. I don't disagree. However, using the XP-penalty system rather than the LA system has two serious flaws. 1. It rewards powerful races at lower levels because the XP totals are so small that you are almost always the same character level as a human (86% of the time for a 10%-penalty...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Hmm, I think I did the math on this once, and it turns out using an XP penalty means the "penalized" character is usually the same level as the non-"penalized" PCs, and only one level behind otherwise and only for a short while ... which means that most of the time, the "penalized" PC is the...

Have you been disillusioned by the Forgotten Realms?

Funny that several people have felt there were too many gods. I actually agree with them, and for a while in the development of the FRCS we talked about cutting most of the deities, mainly through revelations that many deities were just aspects of other deities; Milil and Denier are just...

    ECL Races, EVER worth it?

Yeah, LA can really suck, especially if you're a spellcaster. One thing to take into consideration, though, is something we deliberately built into the established LAs in core books: People should always feel good about playing a core race. That's why they're core. Aasimars and tieflings are...

    What was Alternity like?

Eric, it has been a LONG time since I played or ran Alternity, so I can't say that I remember it being the way you say it is (nor can I contradict it). However, as it's a point-based system you can always add more points to the initial generation of characters (which I think I did when I ran a...

Anyone else use washers and tokens?

I very much like my Alea Tools magnetic counters. As I already base my minis on 1" washers, stacking a mini on top of a counter works perfectly. I haven't used the 3/8" washers, but I think that eventually that "lip" would bend or tear and you'd get annoyed by it.

    How much for that slave?

In the FRCS I estimated 75-150 gp for a typical slave, based on the cost of paying a day laborer for one year (365 sp= 36.5 gp), an estimated lifespan of two years for a hard-worked slave, and the ongoing cost of feeding and housing your slaves. Any less than that and you'd never use anything...

    Dragon 334, Malhavoc's Surprise = Ptolus

I played in the Praemal/Ptolus campaign for four years, and I never felt that the world was too bizarre or inaccessible for me to immerse myself in it.

GenCon SoCal (Anaheim, CA): Worth the trip?

So Cal is much smaller than Indy, but still a "large" con for the RPG industry -- they had something like 6000 attendees the first year, and more the second. It's a good show. Less crowded, less fighting for space and games and demos and the attention of the guests and industry folk. Plenty to...
