Can D&D be played without all the mini rules?

To be honest, I’ve never liked using the grid and have always found the pure narrative/imaginative form of combat much more appealing. Our group initially tried combat without the grid but we found it very confusing because the shift, slide, burst and blast effects are so dependent on position...

    Kensei vs. Swordmaster

Honestly it's not on the roster of things I find awesome either. I was simply trying to find something for comparison.

Why are Magic Items listed in the PHB?

This is not the first edition of D&D, nor even the second to allow PCs to create magic items. Nor is it unique in that characters other than Wizards are able to create them. Also, it should be noted that the items PCs can create are of lower level only. The really awesome items of 1 to 4...

    Platemail sold here for CHEAP!!

The obvious answer is: it's priced so that a PC can afford it. I think a better solution would have been to simply give starting PCs a suit of armor that they are able to use and then to have platemail priced more appropriately.

    Kensei vs. Swordmaster

I really don't see where the Kensei powers favor a 2HF over a sword, nor where a swordmasters' powers favor a blade (other than it's specified for his attacks). It would have been nice to see the Kensei powers make use of Con or Wis to make them more appealing to fighters weilding different...

    Kensei vs. Swordmaster

What, exactly, is the difference between a Kensei and a Swordmaster? Kensei (p. 87 PHB) My weapon and I are as one You study an ancient form of martial training that makes you one with your chosen weapon creating a combination of destruction that few foes can long stand against. Swordmaster...

    Paladin's Divine Challenge

It’s true that the fighter’s mark takes a standard action to activate, however, he gets to attack and basically gets a mark for free. While the mark doesn’t last, it doesn’t have the disadvantage of forcing the fighter into any particular action and the fighter can mark multiple opponents...

    Sleeping in armor?

Yes, it’s an inherent disadvantage of armor that it occasionally has to be removed; it isn’t part of one’s body. Any equipment, in general, has this disadvantage. An armor-dependant defender is more vulnerable to this than say, one that has a higher DEX or INT, light armor and a shield. So...

    Sleeping in armor?

Perhaps, I’m not suggesting simulation; it’s one of the reasons I play D&D and not HARN. I think there’s a comfortable medium somewhere between ‘fun’ and ‘real’. It’s not the case that realistic adjudications ipso facto destroy the fun of the game. There are no rules for eating maggoty bread...

    Sleeping in armor?

It wouldn't be a variant rule to rule that characters can't sleep in their armor, it would be filling in the gaps, adjudication, etc. The RAW don't cover everything, DMs need to use common sense. (Speaking of, did anyone notice that it doesn't forbid characters from swimming in their armor...

Cloak of Invisibility: Best item in the game?

Zurai has some serious ownage in the thread, it's very entertaining to read. The This-would-never-happen-to-Orcus-in-my-game camp is missing the point. It's about RAW and about a broken item, and using the RAW to demonstrate how the item is broken. It's well done. Invisiranger (IR) needs a...

Out of Healing Surges - what now?

You’re assuming that there IS a problem with the adventure design and that the lack of surges was not the result of a) poor player/group resource management or b) bad luck. If fudging is obvious, then, yes, it suspends disbelief – part of being a good DM is being able to fudge without making...

Ray of Frost and Cloud of Daggers; Red Headed Stepchildren of Wizard At-Wills?

We started KotS last night. Sorching Burst was probably the days winner. However, Ray of Frost came in a close second as the Wizard was able to slow the Dragon Shields, Skirmishers and keep from getting into melee or flanking the Warlord.

Out of Healing Surges - what now?

What is the role of the character in question? How long (how many encounters) do the players have to go before they are going to be able to rest? Do they have to face the (a) BBEG before this? I’m assuming that the encounters are designed appropriately (i.e. that there are just a few balanced...

    Question about Treasure

I don’t have the books yet, so I don't know how they address this. All the information on treasure and parcels I have is from the excerpt. A ‘parcel’ is just a way of saying ‘a portion of the treasure from level X to X+1’ There is no requirement that a parcel contain any specific treasure...

    Paladin's Divine Challenge

Right, 'Forced' is probably the wrong word. My orginial post was in error. It should read: The Enemy shoud NOT be given an advantage for running away. I still stand by this.

    Question about Treasure

Yes you can. Let's say your adventure is worth 1000xp per player and you have perfectly balanced level 1 treasure throughout divided into 8 parcels. Now, your players decide to option the rat maze portion of the adventure, killing an extra 500xp each, putting them at 150% of expected...

    Question about power-gaming.

I suppose a fire-breathing dragon-man wouldn't satisfy his appetite for bizzare nearly enough then. Yes, you can play a few races out of the MM, though there are no longer ECL adjustments. I don't have the books. From what I have read, power gamers will love this edition as much or more...

    Question about Treasure

In answer to the OP - This. As long as each optional encounter has it's own proportionate parcel, then the PCs will be perfectly experience to treasure balanced. (i.e. no experience, no treasure. If experience then treasure) On a related note; it would bother me to know that a DM was...

    Paladin's Divine Challenge

While I acknowledge that requiring a paladin to engage the target to continue to benefit from his mark is a good thing and within the spirit of the rules, it seems that allowing an enemy to run away from the paladin (thus, not allowing the paladin to use his mark the next turn) to avoid the mark...
