D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

This relates to the stat polarity issue and is something that I’ve been thinking about for a while. With ‘point buy’, racial stat bonuses and powers being closely tied to individual stats, every character is created to fit his niche (role, class, build) perfectly. This is excellent for game...

4e rules will make some games much harder to run

"Don't play 4e then!" The best advice I've gotten all day. And here I've been wondering all this time how to find the best compromise between the literal rules a more open narrative playing style *feels silly* Sometimes the answer is right in front of us and I can't believe that I haven't...

Has Point Buy become standard? What Points?

Depends on what you mean by 'hero'. The Greeks felt that a hero would have a major flaw.

    Intimidate ..too good?

Finding the most extreme example, mathematically and applying it in a way that the rules clearly do not intend is not a way of demonstrating that the use of this skill is broken. The use of Intimidate vs. Will is a guideline, a rule-of-thumb. There will be players whose fun is had in trying to...

    Ki and Elemental - Whatever

Perhaps off topic… sorry A fighter/rogue/ranger powers are from a MARTIAL source and are called EXPLOITS A wizard/warlock/ powers are from an ARCANE source and are called SPELLS A cleric/paladin powers are from a DIVINE source and are called PRAYERS An elementalists? powers are from an...

    Eliminating the divine power source?

I'm glad someone else agrees that Undead are essential to a good S&S campaign. I don't mind them being a bit tough, though their effective level and exp may have to be adjusted. While I haven't read the PHB (not so lucky to get them early) and do not fully understand pacts, It seems they'd be...

    Eliminating the divine power source?

I have been thinking of doing this as well. Very excited to see others interested in the same idea. I hope this thread continues, at least somewhere. How would you deal with Undead, eliminate them? Leave them as is?

    Monster names?

I played with a DM once who, everytime we encountered a creature, would describe it by making an adjective of the MM name. (e.g. You see a beast creeping toward you from the shadows... it's very GRIM with long, matted LOCKS) I can see that I might want to skip his 4e game.

    We're back to AD&D1

I think this is a great thread. (Also, not to draw the ire of the moderators, but I thought the Aspergers comment was funny more than rude as well). One thing I find interesting about threads comparing the various editions of D&D is that often one edition is meant to seem inferior to another...

    Excerpt: Swarms

Yes, that is something to consider. I was thinking though of all this 'exception' based design and something in the swams entry that says "don't use more than one swarm per encounter, simply increase the size and hp of a swarm for a larger encounter." Because the elite rules add defense value...

    Excerpt: Swarms

I was wondering much the same thing: how to scale a swarm encounter? Will we just add more individual swarms to the encounter, or (as they are already made up of several smaller creatures, make the one swarm larger, more viable, etc. It seems that with swarms, as deadly as they are, perhaps...

Why only two at will powers?

Considering that in previous editions non-spell-caster types had about one ‘at-will ability’ (i.e. attack) I don’t see how it could feel any more repetitive.

    House Rules

I’m going to run it strictly by the book for a couple of months before I do any house ruling. However, it’s critical to my enjoyment of the game that there be rules for secondary skills of some kind. If they aren’t spelled out in the DMG then I’ll have a simple system tied in with character...

    I miss CG

I just jumped from the third page to the last... I was wondering when the thread would devolve into a philisophical debate *casually whistles and steps out of the room* Probably the only time in my life I'm ever going to say this: I like the way Palladium does the mechanic much better.

    Detect Magic is Dead

Someone a long time ago decided that to understand how to use a magic item one needed an owl feather and a pearl. For some, this is a tradition of which they are unwilling to let go. Thank goodness that the somantic component of magic missile wasn't the wizard standing on his head and howling...

    Detect Magic is Dead

The identification of magic items would seem to have a new philosophy: It can be as easy or as difficult as the DM would like it to be. There is no longer an inflexible rule: a wizard uses detect magic then identify = items full capabilities known in most cases. To those who say it ‘ruins the...

    D&D 4E 4e Coup de Grace

Fighter: Sir, we’ve dispatched all the hobgoblins. Only one remains, the chieftain but luckily, Tim put him to sleep. Warlord: Excellent, what should we do with the Chieftain? Fighter: Probably just kill him, he’s too dangerous to let loose and we can’t take him prisoner out here. Warlord: So...

    Question re Class Skills

I wonder at the justification of using class skill lists. On the surface it doesn't seem unbalancing to let a player choose any 4 skills for his character. That they have to be on the approved list seems to just stifle creativity.

    D&D 4E 4e Coup de Grace

Marks make more sense to me than sleeping skeletons, but I see your point. Fluff don't match the cruch.
