Players: do you feel cheated if DM improvises?

I prepare and write down my adventures before the sessions. I do try to do it in a modular fashion i.e. after each session add a little more (although I know the ultimate goal in advance). That way I can be more free with the pc's actions and not railroad them. However, no matter how much I...

Skipping time - "... and then six months later..."

I love the idea, I've done something a bit similiar in my campaign. After the party escaped from a well guarded orcish prison in Midnight and were feeling mighty good about themselves we stopped for that week. Next week I started the session by telling them that after their escape every orc in...

Why should I care about the FLGS?

I live in Israel and I moved two years ago really close to the only serious LGS in Tel-Aviv. I really appreciate what they're doing and the fact that they have quite a diverse array of d20 (and other RPG) books. However I never buy there for several reasons: 1. The clerks know nothing about rpg...

    Best NonWOTC Campaign setting?

I nominate Midnight by FFG, its well supported, has an active community and is ... well... excellent! The tone is very dark, sort of Lord of the rings only Sauron won, the dark god Izrador conquered the land of Eredane and almost all of the races are slaves. The heroes are those who fight...

    Boxed Sets

I have almost 20 boxed sets from the golden 2e days, forgotten realms, planescape, spelljammer, ravenloft, al-qadim, dragonlance... :) I like the book format of 3e but you simply cant beat the goodies that came in the boxed sets, the huge maps, the monster booklets... I still try to use a lot...

Do you have auditions for your gaming group?

Recently my group needed 'recruitments' so I posted on forums in israeli RPG sites and got several responses. I've invited the first two over to chat about the campaign and the group. We rolled characters and they seemed nice enough and indeed so far its going good... (crossing fingers). So I do...

    What's in a (Party) name?

My Midnight group decided two sessions ago to call ourselves "The Bucketeers " after a very intense session where we broke out of an orcish prison armed only with a bucket and a half used torch. Thats how it usually happens, we name ourselves after some "momentous" event in the party history :)

    Visual aids in your game

In the past year or so I started inserting a lot more player's handouts and visual aids. I find they really help immerse the players into the game, whether its just an image of the monster they're facing, the npc they're dealing with, a treasure map or anything else... Have you got any great...

I just fought my first [insert critter here]!

I've only recently started playing after spending years and years as DM. I play a tough as iron dwarven fighter called Rorik in a Midnight campaign. Anyway, halfway into our first session we were traveling down a mountainway into a forested area, heard sounds and hid ourselves. Out of the bush...

    What is fresh in fantasy?

I think Arcana Unearthed is a really fresh take on fantasy, It takes a lot of basic concepts of fantasy and changes them. For example no alignments, no hobbits, no elves... Monte Cook specifies several sources of inspiration for AU but one of them seems to me to be really influential and is...

    Setting philosophies

Perhaps for FR the word should be "Supercalifrajalisticexpialidocious!" (courtesy of Ms. Poppins :D )

    Setting philosophies

This is a bit more "iffy" but maybe 'Forgotten Realms' is Wonder, there's always something new to see that you haven't seen before and its quite a high-powered setting

    Setting philosophies

I think for 'Midnight' (FFG) the word is Hope, evil's already won and things look bad but there are still heroes out there trying to fight back.

Have you played D&D in a foreign language?

I live in Israel and although we try to play in english, we use hebrew for about 50% of the time. It's easier on us but it's hard to get a "Medieval feeling" in hebrew, it's just not that kind of language.
