What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

Well, let's see. It's a fine thing, and very subjective. I'd have to say that if one trick (let's go with flaming oil) is your first answer to the question "What do we do about this situation" most of the time (defining "most" is where the subjectivity comes in) then it is probably an exploit...

Running a short game for first time players at school

Just be careful - some folks might be fine with a starting array of abilities of 7, 8, 7, 9, 6, 8 - other people might be put off by it. I know that I myself am shallow enough of a person that I would never have enjoyed that, either then at age 13, or now at age 34.

Conventions: please tell me about them.

I'd recommend at least one round of a RPGA game in this case, just to see how others go about it. :) My biggest thing is this: the first convention is a HUGE culture shock. I still remember my first convention. It is a VERY big step to go from playing D&D in your parents' basement to...

    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

I don't see any link either, beyond formalizing the roles as has been suggested above. If you had an agenda, you could force the appearance of a link (cool-down timers == encounter powers, etc.) but that's pretty disingenuous to my mind.

The PC you want vs the PC you get.

I find it disappointing to have the character idea of playing a greater dog, but then be forced to play a demi-dog because of game reasons. Arooooooooo

    Canon isn't realistic...

Welllll That's true to an extent. Especially when talking about relationships and human-scale events. Who broke up with who, who cheated first, were we on a break, etc. But there are some things that you just can't get wrong, or have too much of a subjective opinion about. If, in a future...

    Best way to teach 4e?

You could try a middle ground. Find out what sorts of characters people want to play - what archetypes or roles they are interested in, and maybe what races/genders. Then go ahead and make the PCs yourself, and then give the players a more generous retrain allotment for the first few levels.

    Best way to teach 4e?

If it is people new to 4E but not new to D&D, then ye olde goblins and kobolds is exactly where you *should* start. Watch them start cursing the shifty dang kobs and gobs. Throw in a few orcs, and then have them start healing themselves with their racial powers.

    Wardens in Fantasy

That's what I see too. Almost a barbarian, but not so berserky - more controlled and deliberate.

In Praise of Stuff that Doesn't Get Praised Enough

I'd even narrow it down to: polearms! One of the only things I miss from my high school days is the ridiculously huge list of polearms. It is a marvel that they managed to give slightly different combinations of damage, weight, and initiative modifiers to each of them....

In Praise of Stuff that Doesn't Get Praised Enough

Having a community of like-minded people to talk with. Even when you disagree it's ok, because how fun would it be if everyone always agreed about everything?

Do you have trouble "Laying down the law"?

Everyone seems pretty vehement about this issue, and nobody can really find a reason other than mental instability to account for die-roll cheating. I guess nobody has ever seen a '3' come up on a daily (or on a save-or-die) and thought "Gee, it sure would have been more fun to have hit with...

    Simple question about secondary damage

Thanks for the input. The breakdown in post #3 is the one that feels best to me also, and is what I would use unless an actual rule with an actual page number were to contradict it.

    Warforged death save bonus

And they can die in 1.5 rounds instead of in 3 if they roll poorly. :P

    Simple question about secondary damage

OK, I don't know how to frame the search for this, or where to look in the rules for the answer. What, if any, bonuses get applied to secondary damage effects from powers? By secondary effects I mean things like the following, many of which are described slightly differently: - starting your...

Is it "metagaming" to remind a player their power works on a miss?

The real solution, of course, is to have an actual grown-up to grown-up discussion with the group (DM included) to be a bit more explicit about what flavour of D&D etiquette fits best for your group. Make sure that the difference between (1) tactical metagaming (influencing what other...
