Players: Does anyone else not mind railroading?

I love that this hobby is big enough to hold both you and me (we're pretty much exact opposites).

    Let's read the entire run

Here's another one that I remember having a photocopy of (or maybe even the real issue, I've lost some of my back issues). It was the default for us, not really optional.

Game Fundamentals - The Illusion of Accomplishment

Wanted to give XP for using "obliged" correctly when many would use "obligated" (ugh, it pains me to even type it out as an example), but haven't spread it around enough yet. lol

Players: Does anyone else not mind railroading?

That sums it up pretty good for me. As a real-world analogy, I've had two different frameworks around my graduate school MSc program to date. In the first year it was "Here's a basic idea. See you in a year" from my supervixor, and that was about it. For the second year it has been "Here's a...

Players: Does anyone else not mind railroading?

I've got my first-class ticket. All aboard! You can find me in the lounge car. I'll be ride the railroad all day long. Look at it this way: I'd trust a good DM with a railroad anyday. I'd also trust that good DM with a sandbox (if those indeed are the two opposing options, which I'm not so...

Game Fundamentals - The Illusion of Accomplishment

I think that there is a whole lot of wiggle room between the two, and that there are plenty of lessons from real-time designs that can be applied to turn-based games without simply porting one directly into the other. But then, while I've seen plenty of lessons learned and new things tried, I...

    Gaming Paper in use.

I know that when I lived in the US I bought this product for a similarly reasonable price at either Office Max or Office Depot. The actual store, not the online store. Actually, since I primarily use the battlemat rather than paper, I even still have about half a pad left (out of two pads...

Game Fundamentals - The Illusion of Accomplishment

I keep getting the impression that "they" are telling us that our attention spans are shorter, not that they necessarily are.

    Gaming Paper in use.

I don't know what your American shops are overcharging for, but in Canada you can get 50 sheets at Staples for 12 bucks. Here's a link (that might block your IP if you're not in Canada, who can tell?).

Game Fundamentals - The Illusion of Accomplishment

Whew! Just read the whole thread to here in one go (and have delayed bedtime by about an hour to do so!) It took about half the thread, but I think I understand the premise of the OP, and can see where some people are arguing things that are not quite what is being aimed at here. Looking at...

    Future of D&D Miniatures

I can certainly see where you're coming from, jasonbostwick. Seems like they are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Let's speculate about the future of gaming with the iPad.

I think the iPad is a step in an interesting direction, but is still not the Next Big Thing that will change the way we play. Regarding battery life, the Next Big Thing in display tech, combining the energy efficiency and direct sunlight readability of e-paper with the vivid colour and fast...

    Future of D&D Miniatures

Yeah, if WotC was actively involved in the secondary market I could see it, and I can even see that if you blindly applied the MtG model to DDM then it makes a kind of sense, but surely even a cursory evaluation would determine that the collectible natures of cards and minis (especially with the...

    Future of D&D Miniatures

Whew! Someone's got a higher price point than me. lol Mine is more like $1-2M and $3-4L, which would explain why I don't have many DDMs I suppose. I save that kind of cash for minis I have to paint myself.

My experiences with last night's D&D Encounters

Yeah, it ends up being self-selecting. Folks who like it stick around, folks who don't like it try it and don't come back. I used to try to convice people who didn't like it to keep at it, but I've realized that just although it's perfect for me, the style is really not for everyone.

WotC and brick and mortar retail stores - Greg Leeds weighs in

Yeah, a good store makes all the difference (interesting to see a random plug for my store of shoice in this very thread, made by a person I don't recognize by handle no less). Frankly, just having that good store nearby makes me feel a greater zest for playing in general. Events and people in...
