    Immobilized?

"Immobilized" means you can't leave your square but are pretty much unaffected otherwise. "Restrained" means you can't leave your square, and take a -2 penalty of attacks, but are pretty much unaffected otherwise. "Helpless" is what you're after...

    Condition: Weakened

Most other effects differentiate between melee/weapon attacks and other attacks (ie. see Prone on the same page). This one does not. Does that mean that Magic Missile damage is halved if the Wizard is Weakened? I could justify it if I had to...

Should players know minions are minions from a rules/tactics PoV?

The answer very much depends on your individual style. When I DM, there are two very separate games going on. 1) Outside of combat - roleplaying, immersion, etc. 2) In combat - miniatures wargame, minimal roleplaying, talking in metagame terms, etc. I would always describe monsters with...

The most damaging 4th edition attack by Class?

I think that the main reason for people's hesitation on this note is that push/pull/slide don't provoke opportunity attacks the way moving normally would (even though there is no explainable reason beyond "game balance" - you'd think you'd be LESS in control of yourself when being manhandled...

    Bookkeeping powers, actionspoints and hitpoints?

I'm actually finding that form-fillable blank pdfs are more useful. I'm putting things that aren't precisely "powers" on the cards too. Second Wind, for instance, is pretty much an Encounter Power, so I've made a card for it as if it were. Even things that aren't powers at all - I made up...

Solo Monsters and the Risk of Boredom

Sums it up quite nicely, I reckon. Big Mike Calgary AB

Can a PC choose to fail (or not roll) a save !?

Although on consideration, I'd possibly allow it in my own game, just because it's neat-o and reasonably clever. If it ended up being used consistently though, I'd probably stop "forgetting" to enforce the saving throw. Big Mike Calgary AB

Can a PC choose to fail (or not roll) a save !?

RAW, PH 279: "At the end of your turn, you make a saving throw against each effect on you..." There aren't even any 3E-style hedge words like "can" or "may", you just do it. RAI: Pure speculation on my part, but effects that have "save ends" are intended to be used against foes, not friends.

    Bookkeeping powers, actionspoints and hitpoints?

In case anyone hasn't found them yet, there are some very nice fan-created power cards here at EN World http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?t=231186 I particularly like the ones by jfjohnny5 Big Mike Calgary AB

Is Fey Step really the best racial power?

I'm actually liking the halfling Second Chance, but I haven't had the opportunity to see all of them in action yet.

D&D 4E 4e's Inorganic Loot System: Yay or Nay?

How about this: In 4E, the onus is on the DM who wants more verisimilitude. The formulae are there so that you can deconstruct NPCs/monsters (ie. that whole magic threshold thing), then give them gear and re-add the numbers to get back to where you started. Now they have gear! Lots of gear...

D&D 4E 4e's Inorganic Loot System: Yay or Nay?

Then again, the monsters themselves are also sort of "Schrodinger's Encounters", in that their toughness is set by the level of the party facing them. To me, having PCs always face (mechanically) appropriate challenges is a similar break from reality to having their foes "drop" these...

D&D 4E The Economy of Actions in 4e

The other factor is that with more actions, even half-actions, you have a much better chance of performing the "right" action - in addition to pure power (which with this half-action pair would be the same) you are also getting a flexibility advantage. Big Mike

    Keyword: [Stance]

Heya. Can someone point me to where in the PH it talks about how Stances work? There are a few powers with the keyword [Stance] but I can't find anywhere that talks about stances in general. I've looked in "How to Read a Power" and the index, but that's about all. Thanks, Big Mike

Response to recent article by James Wyatt on DMG

The notion that magic item access must be strictly controlled at all times shows a 3E (or earlier) mindset. In 3E, magic items allow PCs to break or bend the rules in a meaningful and game-changing and largely unlimited way (or at least only limited by the nature and number of magic items they...
