What Makes a Convention Game Great?

In a related but slightly different direction, there are several bare minimums that must be there for a successful game. The inclusion of these is certainly not enough to guarantee success, but the exclusion of these is probably enough to guarantee a fail. 1) Be ready to start on time. 2)...

From Gencon Events - "All D&D games at Gen Con being placed with RPGA"

Whew! That was a misleading thread Subject line! I saw "All D&D games at Gen Con being placed with RPGA" but I read "...replaced with RPGA". lol I'm a big RPGA guy, but I could only imagine the outrage at Gen Con if they said "Oh yeah, now the only D&D games we're offering will be LFR and...

lol I thought you'd been going through threads with the thinnest skin in the world, reporting folks for innocent content. I was starting to wonder...

Human vs. Bullywug Round 1 RM:UT (ONE DAY ONLY!)

Strategic vote. Human would face warforged in round 3, so I have to vote them down now. :P

The Nav'i Language and Gamer Culture

Just the same sort of thing as Star Wars back in the day. GL: "I need a space-y word to describe how fast Han Solo's ship is. I remember some word... sounded like a second, only shorter... Got it, parsec!" And then later fandom and Expanded Universe publishers/authors bent over backwards...

WotC and brick and mortar retail stores - Greg Leeds weighs in

From the small amount of first- and second-hand access to retailers' internal discussions that I have, I think that the relative success/failure of 4E, and of these event-driven sales, is about 95% attributable to the attitude of the FLGS owner/staff toward 4E and, to a lesser degree, the...

Brackets and Final Seeding: Race Madness: The Ultimate Tournament

I'm enjoying this, but I agree that a slower pace is probably best. You might consider putting the individual links in the top post of this thread rather than in the middle though. :)

    Let's read the entire run

I played this one quite a bit in my younger, pre-RPG days. It was a favourite among my brother and cousins. I think it must not have been brand new in 1991, I remember playing it earlier than that.

    % of in-character, out-of-character and out-of-game talk

I love the balance in my games. Probably about 5% IC, 25% OOC, 70% OOG It's vastly more about a social experience than about pursuing any sort of pure gaming.

    Cost and Time for Training?

This is one of those issues where it's hard for me to bite my tongue. Obviously a considerable number of people like the notion of training to gain levels - people have been doing it for decades. Me? Enormous dislike would be an appropriate description. For me, the issue would be a...

    Let's read the entire run

Oooh! I played the crap out of this one. Probably the best of the Complete X series in my view. I especially liked the Battlerager kit. I made one, and rebuilt him 3-4 times over various editions.

What do you get out of signatures?

How was the local bear population during her childhood? Minus one? (My folks are in Tennessee right now on vacation)

What do you get out of signatures?

Keep it simple is my motto. A lot of times knowing where someone is from can add an interesting context to what they post, so I put my own location in my .sig in a Golden Rule sort of way.

    Min/Max your Min/Max'ing

I hate to explain jokes (OK, I'm lying, I looove to make terrible jokes and then laboriously explain them when my wife doesn't laugh, since she must not have gotten the joke if she didn't laugh - I'm slowly training here to laugh at even my stupidest jokes just to avoid the explanation). The...
