Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

Other than the turnover time between August 2000 and the Living City conversion that was a short time later (where Living City still ran under 2E rules for a while after the publication of 3E) I don't remember a lot of older edition play. Even Classics were 3E almost right from then, if I...

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

As a member of that community, I can safely say that we are NOT representative of the D&D community at large. We're off in our own little universe. Anyone is welcome to join in, but lots of folks wouldn't like it.

    Let's read the entire run

I get the feeling that this is more "hindsight hinting". To us in 2009 the hinting is kind of obvious, but to someone in 1989 reading this for the first time, I suspect that they would still be taken completely unawares when the problems crop up.

Items that Trigger on Critical Hits

Why not? The extra damage is untyped. And it's not a free benefit - you are paying the opportunity cost of not wearing a different ring, many of which are very very good.

    New D&D Survey

I steered my answers toward "I purchased the book; I use stuff from the book every session; I never bring the book to the table as a reference; I have never read the non-crunch sections and therefore have no opinion of them".

What do you try and achieve with your character?

I play exclusively RPGA games, which leads to playing many characters. I play a nice mix of typical and atypical characters. Now, I'm generally as shallow as the next powergamer, and I love my optimized warforged barbarian to pieces. However, I find that I get a special kick out of taking a...

DDI - 8000 subscribers and counting - When will it stop?

Word. Anecdotally, I know about 30 people with DDI subs, of whom about 3 have ever logged in to the Wizards forums.

    D&D Brand Dilution

"Dilution" has a this negative vibe to it, where the thing that is diluted is weakened as it spreads out. I kind of think that "growth" - where the thing that is growing is strengthened as it spreads out - might be more appropriate.

So what are the thoughts on the RPGA?

Well, Thanlis made an excellent review of the process, from the point of view of a new person joining in. All I can really do is add some overview type comments. 1) Keeping score - we used to do that, but we haven't since early in the decade. Although we do still formally keep track of...

[Folks that like 4e] What are some things from previous editions that you miss?

I did it twice, myself. Once accidentally with a Druid (accidentally as in I had planned to be more of a controller-type Druid when I envisioned the character, but through both RP and mechanical experience I found the melee path worked better) and once deliberately with a Cleric.

[Folks that like 4e] What are some things from previous editions that you miss?

Time for some brutal self-honesty. :) I'm a big fan of the balancing/levelling-out of all the classes in 4E, but I secretly really enjoyed finding the loopholes and combos in 3.x and earlier that let me make crazy broken stupid PCs in ways that none of my friends could predict. I know I...

Less is More? Less books per setting equal more enjoyment?

So basically what you're saying then, is that less is more, unless it is less, in which case it's more? (On topic - I like the "three and out" strategy, especially when combined with non-printed support through DDI.)

Advice request for build - "melee warlock" type

I've played around with a build like this (I've done it with Warforged, because that is all I play, but it would work just about as good with a human). The problem really is that the build doesn't really fill the role you're looking for until level 4 or 6 (it is a feat-heavy sort of thing to...

Does High Fantasy + Old School = ?

Well, I know that one year my gaming friends and I all took a Food Studies class in the block right before lunch together. We'd play and cook and got permission to have the room during lunch, so we got two hours a day, three days a week. Otherwise, though, we never played actually at the...

    Uncannily prescient PCs.

I was introducing two of my non-gamer friends to D&D. I ran the boxed adventure The Night of the Vampire, which I still have but don't recall the details of. The gist of it was that you eventually figure out the dude is a vampire and fight him, but initially you have no idea there even is a...

4e Extravaganza Seminar (with Cover Pics)

The one thing I'm worried about is that they call it "Players Handbook Races: ..." What about genasi, drow, warforged, etc. who were not in a PH? I want to see a warforged book.

    Adventure Tools: what's next?

There's something I'd like to see. An easier way to create custom powers and power cards in the CB. I figured out a way to make a custom card for the daily ability associated with the Barbarian multi-class feat Berserker's Fury, but it is a clunky and inelegant way to go about it. Actual...

    It's Dark Sun

I think the motivation for trying to make these things work is to be able to use as much of the standard 4E cosmology as possible in a way that doesn't compromise the "feel" of Dark Sun. "Feel" is a pretty ephemeral thing, and short of simply reprinting the original 2E box set they WILL fail to...

    It's Dark Sun

Now HERE's a guy who can re-fluff 4E stuff into Dark Sun. For the record, I am a big fan of the notion of the Feywild having already been "used up" as a primo source for defiling magic (possibly with isolated pokets of green still existing here and there, fiercely guarded by fey protectors)...
