The Best of the Best - Defenders.

OT I dunno. You could argue in favour of the Ranger and Warlord too... /OT

    Best 1v1 Arena Character?

You maximize the penalty you can apply to your opponent's save against one of your effects. Should be able to tweak it close to -11 by level 18 I think. Means the level 1 Daily Sleep becomes an auto-win (assuming that it hits). Yup.

One on one? The lock-down orb wizard.

    Advice on finding a game

Try checking out gaming stores in the area. In particular, think about trying out a RPGA gameday, if you can find one local to you (should be plenty of them, I'd think). The style of game sure isn't for everyone, but you won't know until you try.

The Best of the Best - Defenders.

I hope that the issue doesn't resolve to "which defender can send out the most damage", because that isn't the issue. :) I picked Earth-Warden. Mostly because of all the powers that truly lock down foes, and the "get over here" on a marked foe. Close second to Shielding Swordmage. Third to...

    Conventional Philosophy

I haven't been to a non-RPGA con in a while, and my first (and only) trip to GenCon was my first real convention so I didn't know what I was doing. As something of an old hand now, I have many things I'd do differently. My first new rule would be to spend at least one full timeslot not gaming...

    It's Dark Sun

Thinking about it more, Defiler/Preserver might be options for the existing Arcane classes, rather than classes of their own.

    It's Dark Sun

There were more than this - I have a female half-giant mini that my wife used later as the enlarge person version of her cleric.

    It's Dark Sun

Speculating on the contents of a Dark Sun Player's Guide 1) Races: Mul, Thri-Kreen, Half-Giant 2) Classes: Templar, Defiler 3) Equipment: Bone and obsidian gear. Some way to get the attack/defense/skill math to work without magic items (inherent bonuses or something). Anyone have any...

    It's Dark Sun

I love you. Well, there was that huge Gladiator article in Dragon #368 a while back. Full of feats and equpment and paragon paths and multi-class weapon styles and such.

What's the WORST type of encounter you hate to write up?

All of mine are here. NPC parties (in 3.x) and 3D encounters. I wrote a few RPGA adventures in 3.x edition. More than one included class-level NPCs, often with templates, who had to be individually statted out for level 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 versions. Oy, I wrote one adventure with 3...

    Let's read the entire run

Is that an ad for the game, or an early version of the game itself? I have a couple of friends who own standalone versions of Mertwig's Maze (that they bought on eBay a few years back) and it's a riot to play.

What game system have you tried that made you go WOW!

I know you said not D&D. But the only game that ever "did it" for me the way you describe is the Dragonstar d20 setting/rules.

    Defining "old school" by vote

I'm kind of curious why none of these would be a choice: DM as antagonist DM as referee DM as lead story teller Is it because none of these by themselves are representative of your vision of old school, or is it because there is some 4th option that is?

    Defining "old school" by vote

I kind of hope that this thread doesn't die horribly... Personally, I've come to suspect that I define "old school" wildly differently than people who claim to like old school define it.

    Is "Old School" Overrated?

I kmow that for me, I'm having more fun with the actual game now (playing 4E) than I ever did back in the early 90s when I started playing. That, of course, isn't true old school to a lot of peeps, but it is to me. I probably had more fun playing D&D then, but the fun was more related to...

Coup de grace or not coup de grace?

My rule: As long as there is one PC still standing, I will never ever ever use CdG on a fallen PC. Once they are all down, then I'll either capture them or CdG/kill all of them, depending on the story (that one has only ever come up once for me - they died horribly).

    *Standard* Array

I used to be like that, then I realized that the way I play it will be forever until I hit level 28 anyway, and if I can get a lot more mileage out of it right now... Also, it feels nice to get that extra little boost at level 4, rather than having to wait for level 8. And a second one at 11...
