The 5+ Styles of DMing: Contrasted/Compared/Mocked

Haha, MerricB. :) I'm happy to see a "Killer DM" such as yourself indulging in some friendly abuse-the-DM humor. When all the abused D&D Players of the world rise up, cast off their chains and judo-flip their cruel DMs into the Pit of Repentance, you will be spared. :) RangerWickett, yes...

The 5+ Styles of DMing: Contrasted/Compared/Mocked

This thread is an effort to create a better understanding in the RPG community of the myriad differences between the 5+ styles of DMing. It is meant in no way to torment DMs, whether or not they have it coming to them. At the bottom of this post are 2 examples comparing and contrasting...

Players: How much control do you want in a campaign?

Wow. That's a tough question. Pre-planned adventures are much, much better than loosely-outlined or totally-winging-it adventures, IMHO, so I want lots of pre-planning. Then again, I like choosing from several plot threads. I guess my answer is...I want BOTH. :) Tony

The game I play in just dies... and it turns out it's my fault.

One way to find a new group is to call the people from the old group and ask them if they have any leads pertaining to a new group. Call from time to time, not just once. You might even call some of the people from the group prior to that group. Eventually sombebody is likely to say, "Well...

My daughter is named after my wife's first PC!

Kinda. The name for my daughter came from an NPC of mine, not a PC. The NPC was named Sindil--a powerful wizard in my 2E campaign. Some years later, when my wife was pregnant, I pitched that name to her. She liked the name, but not the spelling (the "SIN" part, specifically)...So she came up...

    World's Largest Dungeon?

Oh. Here's another idea! (I know, you didn't ask for ideas..but I can't help myself. Sorry.) On every page where there's a monster, put a skull icon in the margin. An outline of a skull, really. Then after the PCs kill the monster, the DM gets to color in the skull with his pencil!!! Oh...

    World's Largest Dungeon?

Coool. I like that a Listen check can help to save your character from a second blast. Hey, know what might be a nifty feature for the book? An empty 1 x 3" box appearing in the bottom corner of every page, so the DM can easily pencil-in personalized details about the rooms. Or the DM could...

    Theft and Alignment

IMHO, a CG cleric would 'not' have a problem with looting a tomb. Nor would a paladin, for that matter. In a D&D world, taking stuff from a tomb is like picking-up a gold bracelet off the ground: You'd be crazy to just walk by and leave it there. Of course, a paladin or good-aligned cleric...

    Theft and Alignment

I like rogues, so I like them to have as much room as possible to be themselves, whatever their alignment. So I'd say stealing is neither chaotic nor evil when it comes to rogues. This way a rogue can be good and/or lawfully aligned and still be able to steal stuff under certain circumstances...

I'm Amazed...A Bit of Showing Off

I think I can usually tell when a DM is winging it. There is something about the way things are described that give it away, among other things. Amyhow, to my point: When a DM wings combat by inventing a bunch of monsters on-the-fly, usually there is NO treasure on the dead monster bodies...

[DM Issue] - How would you have handled this?

Yeh, never screw your Players like that. If my DM hassled me like that, I'd think he was trying to make me look stupid and inarticulate, and I would....I don't know....I'd do something that would....then...or..... ACK! See? You made me self-conscious! Tony M

From the Ground Up - Building a Game Company

The Oprah has some info on business plans located here: http://www.oxygen.com/contest/getthemoney/resnick/plan.aspx Eosin, one thing confuses me about this whole project: The project seems to be about two different things at the same time: (1) Making a single product that probably won't make...

Why is it so popular to kill innocent NPCs?

Any NPC has the 'potential' to be an evil, sneaky villain. They may act nice and appear unarmed, but maybe they're waiting for the perfect moment to steal the PC's stuff and poison their horse! Killing any so-called 'innocent' NPC is merely a pre-emptive attack, done because one's PC is...

    Boredom [rant]

Your DM isn't doing his job right. You should say things at the table to remind the DM that he needs to spread the FUN around. You should also say things to let the DM-hog know he's hogging the DM. For example: (to the Player) "Excuse me. Excuse me. Thank you. Is there some way we can...

[Poll] As A *Player*, Do You Enjoy Low-Magic/Grim&Gritty Campaigns?

Good point. I'm one of those folks 'wary' of Low Magic campaigns (for reasons stated previously). Here's my assumptions about Low magic campaigns: 1) No cool or powerful magic-items will ever fall into the PC's hands. That means no flying carpets, belts of giant strength, flaming swords...

[Poll] As A *Player*, Do You Enjoy Low-Magic/Grim&Gritty Campaigns?

In my experience, most players are extremely creative, not lacking in creativity, so I can't agree with your theory. This is the way I see it: a Low-Magic campaign may be the means a frustrated DM uses to reign in his Players' creativity. Creative players require a super-creative DM, and some...

[Poll] As A *Player*, Do You Enjoy Low-Magic/Grim&Gritty Campaigns?

I voted no to low-magic. Low-magic indicates that the DM wants his or her Players to have fewer options and to behave more predictably. BLEECCCHHH! :] Tony M

    Gamer stereotypes

Haha, yeh, that sounds like an oxymoron to me. The writer was trying to be witty, maybe. My favorite gamer stereotype is the creative, passionate, smart, friendly, dice-loving stereotype. This is the most accurate one, anyhow, IMHO. Tony

    Are DMs better players?

It all depends, I guess... However, there are some DMs who can't STAND being players. You can usually tell these people because they say at least once every other session, "How many more sessions until we're done?" And then they explain how they want to DM next, in case you forgot from last...
