Your PC may not spend a lot of time healing, but, in general, 3.5 encounter design pretty much assumes a healbot cleric. An assumption which 4E kicks to the curb.

My opinion here is much the same as for the upcoming Sword of Truth TV series. Amidst the 100's of pages of cruft, I'm pretty sure there are at least a couple good movies in there. It's all up to the screenwriter and director to find the right bits. ;)

In that case it's a question of objective. The high priest has the objective of completing the ritual. The PC's have two objectives; stopping the ritual and demolishing the cult. :)

Having played 4E, I've got to chime in. Don't bash it until you've played it at a tabletop session. It's fun. That being said, I'm ambivalent about switching the Southern Operatives game over. I'd be happy to, but I see little reason to re-tool an in-progress game.
