    Why Orcs beat Elves

Which is why the elves in my 24 year old AD&D campaign expend vast resources on "managing the orcs" or "population reduction". Keeping a viritual civil war of orc tribe verse orc tribe is required. Ensuring the human who also breed rapidly have extreme conflict with orcs is also required. As...

Holy sheepdip - wotc to republish old editions

So what is WotC doing with the old AD&D materials? Reprint or DDI or Nothing?

How fast do your PCs level up?

IMC which is 1st ed AD&D w/2nd ed AD&D materials ie 1.5 hybrid w/UA, since the game restarted in 2004, we have played for 7 years. The highest level PC's are 17th, 2 18th and 1 19th. We played several times a week, then were down to once a month, then back to several times a month. If a typical...

Poll: What is the highest level you've ever gamed to?

1st ed doesn't break down at high level... 1st ed AD&D - I have played and DM'd characters as high as 38th level. As DM if you keep a handle on the magic items and power of the magic items given as treasure then the game is very workable at very high level provided the number of player...

How much backlash is too much?

Really? The Paladin was such a moron that he was running around at -1hp and forced a confrontation with a jerk he suspected of unleashing some demons? Guess that Paladin was lawful stupid, not lawful good. Exceptionally poor DMing on your part in my honest opinion. If you wanted the RP, have...

The Player Psychology of Fleeing Villains

The dragon should be MORE dangerous next time around and at full hit points. If the dragon has an intelligence above moron, it won't engage a party that beat it on their terms like it did last time. As other poster said, who cares if they don't like the fact the dragon plays for keeps.

    WotC articles on GMing

Very very true...have seen a DM protecting his bad guys detected by players almost destroy a game. That's something that really irritates me as a player when DM's do that. Once we had a DM with three pet NPC bad guy spellcasters who were gloating over razing a village. They were watching the...

Next year, I'm back to running AD&D

After being away from AD&D for seven years due to real life we started again in 2004. The best choice I made as DM, was to re-read the PHB, DMG, & MM cover to cover. Solo a few encounters to get back to speed on the combat system as written. Then to decide to use my old house ruled iniative...

    Is D&D Art?

Depends on which edition you are playing.....joke Depends on how you are playing. If it's homebrew and the story develops from a blend of what the DM intended and what the players characters do, with surprises and twists for both DM and players it can be very close to art. A lot of times it's...

    Lost Caverns of Tsojanth...

Lost Caverns of Tsojanth... played it 25 years ago...remember the bodak and not much else. As others said test of character equipment. Our group survived but it wasn't one on the modules we returned to afterward to run another group of PC's thru like Keep on the Border Lands etc. Tomb of...

    Dealing with paranoid players

Before one could assume that was the case for the current game, one would be prudent to use that nifty local lore skill one of the PC's had to find out if that was the case in this town. Besides, this sounded like a 3e game not a 2e. Quick check...so yes his choice was reckless & stupid IMHO but...

is this GM bad or am i just a wuss?

Elfwitch, Ever think about trying old school OD&D or a knock off like Labyrinth Lords? If you've played the new versions of the game, the old one can seem fresh again. There is far less "design" work for creating PC's. Roll the PC's up the hard way 3d6. Your DM is a natural for LL because...

is this GM bad or am i just a wuss?

Epicbob, Many times being a 1st AD&D DM, I've had a group of inexperienced players. That's really one of the best situations for an experienced DM. Everything is new and exciting for them. The DM needs to have an excellent grasp on how what he wants to challege the players. I think your DM is...

Tell me the composition of your campaign groups

The campaign started in 1981. System is 1st ed AD&D core w/UA and some 2nd ed AD&D, some house rules. I'm the primary DM, two other players coDM in different parts of the game word which is Greyhawk. It is a high level campaign. Several PC's have been ran for five plus years, one has ten years...

Do grognards have to be jerks?

Say WotC out loud it can rhyme with Nazi. Sounds like the person making the comment had passion but lacked tact. As for my experiences with this...first played D&D in the late 70's. Currently run a 1st ed AD&D campaign that started in 1981 and had a break between 1997 to 2004. People tend to...

    Dealing with paranoid players

Powergamer? LOL - He's playing the real powergame getting into the DM's head outside of game. He acts scared, but your DM can't touch him easily unless she cheats, which she won't do. How did the character get this way? Who's really in control and calling the shots? It's not you or the DM based...

    Dealing with paranoid players

Hey Elfwitch, Maybe they are Paranoid players, maybe not. Bad gaming experiences from the past, that makes it sound like they are victims. Who knows? I very much doubt any real old school player that still plays is a scared victim because of AD&D, maimed from being able to properly play new...

    Problems with saving throws?

1st ed saves were 95% obvious. I still run a 1st ed game. Disintegration is/was always save vs spell. Finger of death save vs death. I always liked the old system better more flavor. You knows it on when you hear" save vs death or die!" Like spice used sparingly for best effect.
