Why are we trying to make 1st level PCs tougher?

That can happen, sometimes it's luck sometimes it's a bad DM. I guess some will see this as bad DMing. I think it was stupid play, and pretty typical of what I've see get PC's killed, time after time in several different editions of the game. Adventure party is seven PC's and seven players...

Why are we trying to make 1st level PCs tougher?

Yes, much of the time it is bad players not thinking things thru. I was playing with a 3e group. They all knew the rules inside out etc much better than I do for 3e. We were about to get into a fight, with an unknown opponent. There was a bridge we could have fallen back too. It was TEN feet...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

I've ran AD&D with co-DM's before the additional input was a good thing. However, the idea of having say seven people doing game by committe probably isn't going to work quiet as well as he makes it sound for most people. Seven DM/Players is sort of like having seven cooks making the soup...

Regardless of Edition, what do you like about D&D?

Spell Segments is something I love. It makes spell combat very interesting for the casters. Raise Dead and similar not being a given due to the resurrection roll being required. Easy to generate and set up characters. The old five saving throw system. It has varity to keep it interesting...

Why are we trying to make 1st level PCs tougher?

Playing smarter, usually does wonders for making charcters more survivable at all levels but most of all at 1st. Run away today to fight another day. Use bait, to get the monster to come to you, then ambush it. Don't fight fair. Hire some mooks and red shirts to carry the torch etc. Dwarfs...

When you're an "evil" person, what non-evil term do you use to describe yourself?

Usually, this sends the local peasants running in fear faster than Demogorgon... "I'm an experienced, results driven, consultant with proven track record of boosting corprate profitability thru professional management of cost cutting, downsizing, right sizing, & out sourcing. I look forward...

Bring it back!!!! Bring it back!!!! Bring it back!!!! I need some new 1st ed Player Handbooks! There is a market for the older game, just give us a chance to prove it. That's exactly what it would take to get me to buy a WotC D&D book. I think my whole group would buy them cause our...

    Anyone remember Comeliness?

Yes, I remember when Comeliness showed up in the Dragon Mag and later in UA. We used it then and use it now. Gives seven stats. Often it's a dump stat for some players. As DM I have a lot of fun with that as many NPC's are shallow and will snub the ugly characters...just like in real life. Good...

Are your games continuous or episodic?

Mix of both. Some of it is player directed adventures. The game world reacts to whatever they get into. Some of it is DM directed because I'll throw stuff out for them to react to and do something about. If the resulting adventure can be completed in a single session it will other wise it will...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

Ramble by Gamer w/30+ years of wargames, D&D, AD&D etc Interesting stuff to read & and good blog to inspire thought. I don't think we have to have a revolutionary new game concept to save the hobby. We do need a revolution in what's passing for D&D these days. I apologize in advance but this...

    character historys

Usually, wait on that history stuff until we see if the character will live long enough to make it to 3rd level. Also getting a feel for the character first, seems best for us most of the time before doing the back story.

    Dragon #359

Well I'm actually glad they finally killed the worthless rag. Other than being fish wrap, I can't say many issues since about number 100 were worth reading.

Is WoTC even relevant to you anymore?

As for D&D, WotC has never been relevant to my AD&D game. I will use maps off of their site but that's it. I very seldom buy new WotC D&D products, because all the ones I've are pretty bad. Some of the 3rd party 3e stuff is decent and I'll buy that to read and steal ideas from on occassion...

Requiring Players To Draw The Dungeon Map!

It helps and is ideal to be able to have the players draw it out. It adds imersion as mentioned above. I started back in 1981 and we tried to draw stuff. It tended to work best with our simple layout home brew dungons, than with the printed maps for the reasons mentioned above. To save time, I...

Banning a Player from my Group. Am I Justified?

Back when he played 2e did he argue and act like a jerk? I'm going to bet probably so. I think your dealing with a personality issue - he needs to grow up. If you show up at DM's game, you play the version the DM offers. DMing (all editions) takes effort and time. Good players, respect that and...

RAISE DEAD: get rid of it and make D&D better

As said above, "What I *do* have a problem with is the revival being automatic once the spell is cast. There needs to be some small chance of failure...1e's resurrection survival roll mechanic handled this perfectly" R&R was not automatic, fail the roll and the character was gone forever. There...

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

As mentioned many times a lot depends on the details around the situation. For an experienced group of players the trap isn't unfair. Normally, most of folks I DM for are smart enough to have more than one thief check for traps as counting on a single die roll even if your odds are good will...
