Is Dragon Magazine even *Relevant* anymore?

After the mid 1980's Dragon became a worthless rag and it has stayed a worthless rag. Dungeon on the other hand is outstanding.

    Top 5 D&D Books

For OAD&D, core of PHB, DMG & MM with the five others being 1st ed UA, DDG, FF, 3e Relics & Rituals, & 3e MMIII. It's fun (for the DM) throwing some of the nastier 3e critters at PC's w/o feats. For 3e, core of PHB, DMG, & MM with the five others being MMIII, Relics & Rituals, Traps &...

I made an NPC with a bag of devouring on his person...

Hmm, that's the sort of DMing that gets the DM's pet NPC's poisioned and/or assassinated and the body disintergrated and remants are burned with the ashes tossed into a running body of water in several groups I've played with. In this case, putting the NPC's body in the bag would have poetic...

    Why do you buy Dragon?

I found Dragon to become very hit or miss after about issue ~103 or so back in the 1980's. For Dragon these days it's a weak magazine, I just check out the stack of old Dragons (250 and up) and pick the ones I want. No reason to subscribe just pick up the best issues of what is offered...

So how stupid is this campaign idea?

Chugga Chugga Choo Choo - Ask them to try it for like one session and to continue if they like it. I've set my players up once with pre-gen/stat'd characters for a 3 session mini-campaign. They ended up liking the characters enough to keep playing them for about a year or so. I tried very hard...

Take the GM out of the Equation- A 3e design philosophy

There is a far amount of the fast rules light version Kriegspiel alive and well in my 1st OAD&D campaign. Seems to me there is far more of that in OAD&D than in 3e. This is "best" part of OAD&D if you will. It's kind of like the Prussians started with 3e and moved over to OAD&D. ;)

Take the GM out of the Equation- A 3e design philosophy

Defacto, I think 3e tried to minimize the DM role in game in favor the other players. The resulting stat process increases the DM's drudge work and reduces flexability. I think the real goal of 3e was to make sure there was a consistant set of rules for convention play and Living Greyhawk etc...

Did anyone like the old Monstrous Compendium ring-binder format?

I really disliked that "notebook". It was poorly planned and stuff was out of alphabetical order with the addition of the 2nd part.

    I've figured it out.

We stole what was worth stealing from 2ed and kept playing 1st ed AD&D. Several new players entered the game just as the 2nd materials came out and the 1st ed ones weren't in the stores anymore. My campaing started in 1980 was still going strong in 1989 and I wasn't about to redo it for 2nd...

The Internet's influence on your gaming experiences

It would have been much easier to find other groups that were into AD&D. There would have been crosspollennation more often. It would have been so much easier to come up with ideas as it wouldn't have been necessary to read as much looking for neat ideas from authors. My players would have had...

Why are Mind Flayers considered "cool villains"?

All of the reasons listed above are why they are cool...but to me the following one will always have a special place... Way back in the early 80's with our very first batch of high level characters ran amok killing everything that crossed their path. There were a couple of spell casters with...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

Well that's because of the MAGIC DEER...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

On the surface it appears that way...but for example check out the Groaning Spirit in the OAD&D Monster Manual an excorism kills the GS. Not so in 2nd ed. The life span of the elf is changed drastically in 2nd. This was a real issue for my game and it never moved to 2ed. There were several PC's...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

I understand where your coming from. I don't like to write back stories early on either as you say it is best to get a feel for the PC in question first. I tend to like to around 4th but it varies.

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

GNS discussion usually ends up reading like a bunch of folks chatting that are trying to impress themselves and each other from what I've seen of it. I like the Robin Law's seven types of role players. I would be as a player in order: Tactician, Powergamer, Buttkicker - which very much fits my...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

I think the best campaigns have a combination of both styles and can move back and forth between them. I agree 100% that both styles are present in 1st ed AD&D. Most of my players will stay true to character unless it's clearly a serious deadly situation. When majority of the current group...

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

Cyclical inititaive system - it's total lack of elegance IMO. It's melee every bad guy waits while every good guy/gal takes their action & vice-versa. It should be easier to interleave action and disrupt accordingly. Then there is once the pattern is set it's locked in place. Inititaive should...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion so I'll post mine too. I think 3e is better than 2e ed too As for being "better" than OAD&D, there are a lot things OAD&D can do faster and better than 3e. OAD&D rocks when used to run a nine player, three adventure party, 28 PC campaign due to it's...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

My comment was meant in jest. Taking away options? Hardly...it was the players choice they could fight however they wished. An ordinary dex made dual weapon a -2/-4 for each weapon to hit. Some feats in 3e are better than others...that is hardly talking away choices. Some players wanted to...
