Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

mark_j Welcome to Enworld. Please stop by Dragonsfoot if you like 1st ed AD&D as it is an excellent site dedicated to out of print D&D. It's one of my favorite sites for older edition games as I still play & DM OAD&D Check out www.dragonsfoot.org

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

In AD&D, learn to fight like an elf or you'll die like an orc.

My DM doesn't want to use miniatures...

Used mini's on occassion with OAD&D, 2nd & when playing 3e. As DM I like them for showing party order etc as much as for combat etc. There usage depends on anythings etc. However, if the lights are out and magical darkness occurs, I always like for the minis to disappear as DM. The players...

    Comeliness has returned!

Still use UA and comeliness stat here. Once had a player demand he should get to re-roll his characters comeliness stat because, "Since I have to play an ugly character in real life, I refuse to play an ugly character in game." That convinced me to let him re-roll. :heh:

    XP and leveling progressions compared.

Have to disagree with that statement. Let's see in OAD&D by the book you are dead at 0 hit points. There is an optional rule for the DM if the killing blow only took you to -3 hit points you character will lose 1 hit point a round until -10 at which point the PC dies. To get any hit point bonus...

What's the best you've ever gotten for your buck in gaming products?

Without question my OAD&D PHB, DMG, MM & DDG's. My orginal copies were purchanced in 1980 and used until late 1995, then again in Aug of 2004 until present. My OAD&D players make fun of the beat up PHB with it's yellowed pages and faded color. If I need to get inspired for playing in the 3e...

NC Game Day VII - April 23!

I'm hoping you'll go with "Run Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl" as the first gaint adventure was most excellent!

Okay, who here LIKES the magic items and magic system in D&D?

I like the Vancian magic system, all in all. I like the fact players have to plan and adapt accordingly to regain spells. It part of what keeps the game (all editions) the sort of game you have to think and plan ahead. It rewards those that can do that and penalizes those that can't. Keeping...

    Ship-To-Ship Battles

Being an old school wargamer, I played WS&IM way before ever playing any D&D. So when naval battles came up, the whole group was like, "Let's use Wooden Ships & Iron Men!" So of course we did! This would be my choice. Might want to do a little DM house ruling for the boarding actions etc. A...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Gary, Here's a link with free pdf's to download and print various types of graph paper. http://incompetech.com/beta/plainGraphPaper I would like to ask about your views on the female strenght limits in OAD&D. After playing for a while with them, as DM I dropped the limits in my campaign...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

My OAD&D group happily steals all the character expanding ideas the players can find. As DM I avoid storytelling adventures like the bubonic plauge. There are many plot themes set up and PC's encounter them from time to time while doing their PC thing but as DM I don't push them in that...

The DM did IMPURE things to my PC!

Seems like this whole thing is being blow out of proportion. The DM should have talked with the player in quesiton up front before anything happened in game etc. The player might have went along if in the loop. I think the part that burnt the player up was he/she was cut out of the loop and all...

GMs altering established campaign setting elements to suit players?

My group was confronted with this way back right after we started playing OAD&D. I think the example is still relevant so I'll share it. We'd been playing for a few weeks, when surprise surprise my older cousin decided she wanted to join the group. This was in part because her little brother...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

Pielorinho, sure may be on Game Day. Sounds like fun. Time there just isn't enough of it... On another note... Shaman's post makes a lot of sense to me. Because when I read 3e, I tend to see it the same way as you did. I was out of gaming from late 1995 until mid 2004. I have a different...

Tell me about Castles and Crusades

Sure that can happen in 1st ed and it can happen in other editions too. As for the monk being a balance issue, no one has played a monk since the mid 1980's IMC. Fighting for each level after 7th and being challenged to defend the level after it was earned, prevented anyone from reaching beyond...

    ADnD 2nd ED VS. 3.5

This is real a question of personal taste...so I'll give you my .02 I dislike 2e overall. The three core books are ok but the de-gygaxification of them cause these books to become boring to read. There are some excellent 2e products like Return to the Tomb of Horrors but there is also lot of...

How Many Actual Sessions Has Your Current Long-Term Campaign Had?

I don't keep a log but this is pretty close... 1976-1980 - heavy into wargames...ended up playing few wargames after starting AD&D... 1980-1983 ~100 per year (at least two times a week sometimes three) * 4 years = 400 sessions that averaged at least 7 hours for = 2,800 hours 1984 around 60...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Orgins of the "Kewl" River Gary, will you share the orgin of the the "Kewl River" on the Greyhawk map with us? Reason I ask is the very first time I saw that word was on the Greyhawk maps. The "Kewl River" near the Gnarley Forest. This was way back in 1980. Does word Kewl have a history before...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

Daniel, I have a question, not meant as flame etc because we all have our likes and dislikes in our D&D games. I play 3e in a friends 3e group, and I enjoy playing it: If the corridors bother you doesn't the 3e's "cyclical/round robin" initiative system and magic item creation bother you at...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

I still run the same 1st ed AD&D GreyHawk campaign I started in 1980. Currently, there are three adventure groups, with nine players and a total of 28 active PC's. Several players are long time and have played since 1980, some joined in 1989 and three joined in late 2004. There are several on...
